with Investing in the right oil With ever tightening legislation surrounding permitted emissions on new vehicles, engine oils have never been so important and a fundamental component for keeping consistent performance as well as maximising engine life. Euro VI is the most restrictive EU standard to date for the reduction of emissions from commercial vehicles. Compared with Euro V, particle emissions are to be reduced by 66% and nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) by 80%. In order to meet the new specified limits, manufactures have looked to a combination of after treatment systems that all work to reduce emissions. Treatment Devices; EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) DPF (Diesel particulate filter) SCR (Selective catalytic reduction) The use of devices like: EGR, DPF and SCR all have their own influence on the lubricant specification. Each technology has its own negative affect, which can be controlled by the use of high quality engine oil, thus maintaining engine performance and fuel efficiency as well as extending component life. It is this emission technology which drives the lubricant specification, but all these technologies come with their own set of repercussions which an efficient and effective oil should combat. Problems include; Increased soot formation and an increased risk of engine wear Ash build blocking the filter which is costly to replace Increased engine temperatures place higher stress on oil All these problems can threaten the performance and efficiency of your vehicles adding cost to your operations and damaging your reliability. Protecting an engines performance, reliability and efficiency is key to enhancing an engines life time. This can be achieved with a heavy duty engine oil which combats the five damaging engine threats; 5 Engine Threats; Soot damage Oil thickening Piston deposits Contaminants Engine wear & corrosion Problem Threat Solution Engine oil can become thicker with age. Oils allow deposits to build up around the piston rings. Contaminants in engines naturally build up in oil. Some oils are stronger than others. Soot is the engines enemy. Castrol Vecton, with System5 Technology, is the only purpose designed engine oil which will combat all 5 engine threats; This causes engine drag and the engine to work harder, increasing fuel consumption. Causes damage to the seal. Oil leaks into combustion chamber will increase oil consumption. Causing loss of performance and protection. Oil needs changing more frequently. Weak oil film leaves engine parts vulnerable to corrosive attacks and can allow metal-to-metal contact that causes engine damage. Build-up can break down protective oil layer and lead to abrasive wear. Soot in the valve train causes engine responsiveness and efficiency to fall. Castrol Vecton up to 40% better at fighting oil thickening. better at fighting piston deposit build-up. Castrol Vecton up to 40% better at handling contaminants. better at resisting wear and corrosion. better at controlling soot build-up. 4 www.broughtonlubricants.co.uk 5
- The Peoples Choice An independent survey has been carried out by Millward Brown into customer preference and brand choice when it comes to engine oil.
