Special Tool(s) Material Removal and Installation 1. If servicing the LH cylinder valvetrain components, remove the LH valve cover. 2. If servicing the RH cylinder valvetrain components, remove the RH valve cover. 3. Remove the spark plugs. 4. NOTE: LH is shown, RH is similar. Item 1: Camshaft Roller Follower Removal Note 1. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the valve stem seal from damage. 2. NOTE: The three rear-most followers on the RH side must use special tool 303-567 in the same manner as is shown in the illustration. 3. Remove the special tool. 4. NOTE: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original locations. Record the camshaft roller follower locations. Repeat the previous steps for each of the roller followers being serviced. Items 2-5: Valve Spring Retainer Keys, Valve Spring Retainer, Valve Springs, and Valve Stem Seals Removal Note NOTE: Carry out the following steps for each cylinder requiring service. 1. NOTE: Position the piston of the cylinder to be serviced at the bottom of the stroke. Use compressed air in the cylinder to hold both valves in position. 2. Using the special tools, compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys. 3. Remove the valve spring retainers, the valve spring and if necessary the valve stem seal. Items 6-13: Camshaft Sprocket, Sprocket Bolt, Camshaft Bearing Caps and Camshaft Removal Note 1. Install and fully tighten the special tool on the camshaft. 2. CAUTION: Camshaft procedure must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result. CAUTION: Once installed, do not remove the special tool at any time during disassembly. 3. Scribe a location mark on the timing chain and the camshaft phaser sprocket assembly. 4. CAUTION: Only use hand tools to remove the camshaft phaser sprocket assembly or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft phaser unit. CAUTION: Do not remove the special tool at any time during disassembly. If the special tool is removed or out of placement, engine must be retimed. Remove the bolt and the camshaft sprocket from the camshaft and the timing chain. 5. 6. Clean and inspect the camshaft bearing caps. - One of the bearing caps contains an oil flow restriction groove. Make sure the groove is free of foreign material. Item 14: Hydraulic Lash Adjuster Removal Note 1. NOTE: Each hydraulic lash adjuster is positional. Mark each hydraulic lash adjuster for installation in its original location. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters. Item 14: Hydraulic Lash Adjuster Installation Note 1. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters in their original locations. Items 6-13: Camshaft and Camshaft Bearing Caps Installation Note 1. 5. Aligning the location marks, install the camshaft sprocket. Tighten the sprocket bolt in two stages. - Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). - Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees. Item 5: Valve Stem Seal Installation Note 1. Using the special tools, install the new valve stem seals.
