The allowable design values are based on lumber having a specific gravity of 0.5, such as Douglas Fir-Larch, with moisture content not exceeding 19 percent. The following specifies the minimum width of the supporting wood element depending on the connector series, and the nail size when specified: THF, 1¾ inches (44 mm); HD 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm); THO 1¾ inches (44 mm) for 10d nails and 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm) for 16d nails; HHDO inches (60 mm); HDO 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm); THD 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm); SKH 1¾ inches (44 mm) for 10d nails and 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm) for 16d nails; TMU 1 3/4 inches. 3.2.2 Steel: The THO15950, THO15118, THO17950 and THO17118 and THD28-2, THD 210-2, THD48, THD410, and THD412 connectors are fabricated from galvanized steel complying with ASTM A 653 CS with a coating designation of G60, a minimum yield of 28,000 psi (193 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 38,000 psi (262 MPa). All other fasteners listed herein are fabricated from galvanized steel complying with ASTM A 653 SS Grade 33 with a coating designation of G60, a minimum yield strength of 33,000 psi (228 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 45,000 psi (310 MPa). Minimum material thickness for No. 12 gauge is 0.0994 inch (2.5 mm), for 14 gauge is 0.0705 inch (1.8 mm), for 16 gauge is 0.0575 inch (1.5 mm) and for 18 gauge is 0.0466 inch (1.2 mm). Reissued January 1, 2003 back to the NES home page 3.2.3 Fasteners: Common wire nails conform to FF-N-105B except that the NA20D nail is a 2½ inch (64 mm) long 20d nail, the 10d x 1½ nail is a 10d nail that is 1½ inches (38 mm) long, and the 8d x 1½ nails is a 8d nail that is 1½ inches (38 mm) long. The 8d x 1½ nail shall have a bending yield strength of 100,000 psi (690 MPa). The 10d, 16d, and 10d x 1½ nails shall have a bending yield strength of 90,000 psi (621 MPa). The 20d and NA20D nail shall have a bending yield strength of 80,000 psi (552 MPa). 3.3 CONNECTORS 3.3.1 THF Face Mount Hangers: THF series joist hangers are U-shaped connectors used to support I-joists and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) members of various widths from 1½ to 5¼ inches (38 to 133 mm). The minimum width of the

THF hangers have 2 and 2½ inch (51 and 64 mm) deep seats with widths varying from 1½ to 5G inches (38 to 137 mm), with varying heights. See Figure 1 and Table 1 for nailing schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.2 HD Face Mount Hangers: HD series joist hangers are U-shaped connectors used to support wood members of various widths from 1½ to 5½ inches (38 mm to 140 mm). The minimum width of the supporting wood member is 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm). The HD hangers have 2 and 2½ inch (51 and 64 mm) deep seats with widths varying from 1 9 / 16 to 5½ inches (40 to 140 mm), and varying heights. See Figure 2 and Table 2 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.3 THO Top Mount I-Joist Hangers: THO series joist hangers are U-shaped connectors used to support I-joists of various widths from 1½ to 4¾ inches. The minimum width of the supporting wood member is 1¾ inches (44 mm) where the 10d x 1½ nails are prescribed and 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm) where 16d nails are prescribed. The THO hangers have 2,, and 3 inch (51, 60, and 76 mm) deep seats, and varying heights. Seat widths vary from 1 9 / 16 to 4¾ inches (40 to 121 mm). The 2 inch (51 mm) and inch (60 mm) deep hangers have double ribs on each top flange and some inch (60 mm) hangers have an additional rib in the seat area. See Figure 3 and Table 3 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.4 HHDO Top Mount Hangers: HHDO series joist hangers are U-shaped connectors used to support wood members of various widths from 3 to 5½ inches (76 to 140 mm). The minimum width of the supporting wood member is 3 inches (76 mm). The HHDO hangers have 2½, 3, and 3½ inch (64, 76, and 89 mm) deep seats, and varying heights. Seat widths vary from 3F to 5 9 / 16 inches (79 to 141 mm). NA20D nails are supplied with the hangers. See Figure 4 and Table 4 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.5 HDO Top Mount Hangers: HDO series joist hangers are U-shaped connectors used to support wood members of various widths from 1½ to 7 inches (38 to 178 mm). The minimum width of the supporting wood member is 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm). The HDO hangers have 2, 2½, 3, and 3½ inch (51, 64, 76, and 89 mm) deep seats, with varying heights. Hangers with 2 inch (51 mm) deep seats have a seat width of 5 9 / 16 inches (141 mm), hangers with 2½ inch (64 mm) deep seats have seat widths varying from 1 9 / 16 to 7F inches (40 to 181 mm), and hangers with 3 and 3½ inch (76 and 89 mm) deep seats have seat widths varying from 1 9 / 16 to 4 11 / 16 inches (40 to 119 mm). See Figure 5 and Table 5 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.6 THD Face Mount Truss Hangers: THD series hangers are U-shaped joist hangers used to support 1½ inch (38 mm) wide wood trusses or 1¾ inch (44 mm) wide LVL. The minimum width of supporting wood elements is 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm). The THD truss hangers have 3 inch (76 mm) deep seats, 1H inches (41 mm) and to 3H inches (48 to 92 mm) wide, and varying heights. See Figure 6 and Table 6 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. Reissued January 1, 2003 back to the NES home page 3.3.7 SKH Skewed Joist Hangers: SKH series hangers are U-shaped joist hangers used to support wood members such as I-joists and wood joists in various widths from 1½ to 3 inch (38 to 76 mm). The minimum width of the supporting wood members is 1¾ inches (44 mm) where 10d nails are specified and 1 15 / 16 inches (49 mm) where 16d nails are specified. The skew of the wood member is to be in the range of 40 to 50 degrees. SKH hangers have inch (48 mm) deep seats, and varying heights. Seat widths vary from 1 9 / 16 to 3 9 / 16 inches (40 to 90 mm). SKH hangers have oversized nail holes on the 45 degree side to allow angled nailing. See Figure 7 and Table 7 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.8 TMU Adjustable Rafter Connectors: TMU series connectors are adjustable rafter connectors for roof slopes from a positive slope of 8:12 to negative slope of 12:12. The minimum width of the supporting header is 1¾ inches (44 mm). The seat depth is 3½ inches (89 mm), except for the TMU-48 which has a seat depth of 3G inches (86 mm). The seat widths vary from 1 9 / 16 to 3 9 / 16 inches (40 to 90 mm),

The nail holes located on the vertical rafter portion of the connector are provided with raised dimples so as to toenail the rafter to the header. See Figure 8 and Table 8 for details regarding nailing schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.3.9 TMP Self-adjusting Bearing Clips: TMP series connectors are used to connect rafters to wall top plates and are fabricated from 18 gauge galvanized steel. The clips adjust from a minimum roof slope of 1:12 to a maximum of 6:12. See Figure 9 and Table 9 for nail schedules, dimensions and allowable loads. 3.4 TORSIONAL TESTS Torsional testing was performed on the products in accordance with ASTM D1761. The frame was made of Douglas Fir-Larch with a moisture content between 17 to 25 percent. See Table 10 for test results. 4.0 INSTALLATION Installation shall comply with the manufacturer's published installation instructions. Copies shall be available at all times on the job site during installation. Notes To All Tables: 1. Uplift loads are increased 33D% and 60% for wind and seismic loads. No further increase is permitted. 2. The allowable design loads are based on lumber with a specific gravity of 0.50. 3. Allowable design loads are for conditions in which the wood moisture content is 19% or less. 4. All fasteners are common type nails unless otherwise noted. 5. The 10d x 1½ nail is 9 gauge wire (0.148 inch diameter) by 1½ inches long. 6. In areas using the Uniform Building Code and for connections in wood that is unseasoned or partially seasoned, or when connections are exposed to wetservice conditions in use, the allowable loads in this report are multiplied by the moisture content factor, C m, specified by the Uniform Building Code. 7.5 The scope of this evaluation is limited to connectors which are installed on lumber that has not been treated with fire-retardant or preservative-treatment chemicals. 7.6 Design calculations and details for specific applications shall be furnished to the code official verifying compliance with this report and the applicable code, as indicated in this report. The individual preparing such documents shall posses the necessary credentials regarding competency and qualifications as required by the applicable cade and the professional registration laws of the state where the construction is undertaken. 7.7 In jurisdictions using the International Building Code, load combinations shall be in accordance with Section 1605.3.2 of the code. 7.8 This report is subject to periodic re-examination.
