Propeller Assembly GENERAL 61-10: PROPELLER ASSEMBLY 1. General The propeller assembly consists of a hollow aluminum hub which supports the propeller blades and also houses the pitch changing mechanism. Movement of propeller blades is controlled by a hydraulic piston/cylinder combination mounted on the front of the hub. Serials w/ Hartzell Propeller: The linear motion of the hydraulic piston is transmitted to each blade through a pitch change rod and fork. A pitch change knob at the base of each blade intersects with the fork. Serials w/ McCauley propeller: The linear motion of the hydraulic piston is transmitted to each blade through a piston rod, linkage assembly, and actuating pin. The actuating pin assembly is secured to the base of each blade with screws. Blade pitch is controlled by the governor. The governor supplies oil to the propeller hub to move the blades toward high pitch position (decreased RPM). Conversely, the propeller blades move toward low pitch position (increase RPM) as the governor drains oil away from the propeller hub. A mechanical spring is installed within the propeller to assist movement of the blades to a lower pitch position as RPM decays since blade centrifugal twisting moment is only present when the propeller is rotating. The mechanical spring will ensure that blade angle will reach the low pitch stop when the propeller is static. If oil pressure is lost at any time, the propeller will move to low pitch. The propeller assembly employs high-strength, aluminum or composite blades. An aluminum or composite spinner assembly enhances the appearance of the propeller and streamlines air flow over the propeller to improve performance. The spinner dome attaches to a spinner bulkhead at the rear of the propeller hub. It is essential that the propeller assembly be maintained in accordance with vendor recommended service procedures. Refer to the manufacturer s approved Instructions For Continued Airworthiness. 1

Using hoist and sling, align dowel pins in propeller flange with corresponding holes in engine mounting flange. Never use oil as a substitute for approved lubricant. Substitution of the approved grease with an unapproved lubricant (or no lubricant) could result in undertorquing or severe overtorquing of propeller attaching parts. Liberally apply lubricant to threads of studs and threads and faces of nuts. Install nuts securing propeller assembly to engine flange. Tighten nuts evenly to avoid hub damage. C. Adjustment/Test - Dynamic Balance Dynamic balancing reduces vibration produced by the propeller and powerplant. Small balance weights are added to the propeller/crankshaft assembly to correct for errors in mass distribution so vibration is reduced. Refer to the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for pertinent information regarding dynamic balancing. D. Inspection/Check - Blade Track Blade track is the way one rotating blade tip follows the other in almost the same plane. Excessive difference in blade track may be an indication of bent blades or improper propeller installation. Refer to the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for pertinent information regarding blade track. E. Inspection/Check - Loose Blades Although blades should be tight in the propeller, slight movement is acceptable if blade returns to original position when released. Blades with excessive movement, or that do not return to original position when released may indicate internal wear or damage. Refer to the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for pertinent information regarding loose blades. F. Cleaning/Painting Propeller blades are painted with a durable specialized coating that is resistant to abrasion. If this coating becomes eroded, it is necessary to re-paint the blades to provide proper corrosion and erosion protection. Refer to the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for pertinent information regarding painting. G. Repairs Nicks, gouges, and scratches on blade surfaces or on leading or trailing edges must be removed prior to flight. Refer to the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for pertinent information regarding repairs. 11
