SAFETY SIGNS This is a powerful piece of machinery. If used improperly, serious injury or death may occur. Study the safety signs which appear below. They are located on the appropriate parts of the borer. If the safety signs do not appear on your borer please replace these with new safety signs. Please read all safety information on the preceding page, all safety notices throughout this manual and the safety signs below before assembling, operating, transporting or removing the borer from your tractor. # Before operating a post hole borer, an operator must read and understand all the information in the owner s manual and understand the safety signs attached to the machine. Post hole borers are designed for one-man operation. You must always bore holes whilst sitting in the tractor seat. Never operate the borer with anyone near to or in contact with any part of the machine, PTO or auger. Accidents have occurred when more than one person is in the immediate area of the machine when it is under operation. Ensure that no one else, including bystanders, are near you when operating the machine. Do not operate the borer unless all shields and guards are in place. Never replace the shear bolt or auger retaining bolt with one longer than those supplied and specified by the manufacturer. Do not use the borer unless the auger point and cutting edges are intact and in good working order. Following these simple safety rules will help minimise the possibility of accidents and increase your productivity in using the machine. Ensure that everyone who operate the borer understands that it is a very powerful piece of machinery and if used improperly, serious injury or death may occur. The responsibility for safe operation rests with the operator of the machine. 6 19

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE FOR OWNERS/OPERATORS OF POST HOLE BORERS MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS Mounting Safety Notices Warning: Do not reach or place yourself under equipment until it is blocked securely. Safety is a primary concern in the design, manufacture, sale and use of post hole borers. It is essential that everyone involved in the assembly, operation, transport, maintenance and storage of this equipment be aware, concerned, prudent and properly trained in safety. The majority of accidents involve entanglement on the driveline or auger. This entanglement becomes greater when you replace shear bolts with those which are longer than those specified by the manufacturer. The improper replacement occurs most often on machines that are loaned or rented to someone who has not read the owner s manual and is not familiar with a post hole borer. Machines include, as standard, guards or shields for auger adapters, drivelines, input shafts and safety signs. Older machines can be retro fitted to add new guards, shields or safety signs. If you have an older machine which does not have current standard safety equipment please contact us and we can discuss how to bring your machine up to current safety standards. Some of the post important safety rules with regards to the use of post hole borers are listed below: 18 Warning: Be sure the safety shield over the PTO stub shaft on the gear box and auger is not removed from the borer. Caution: For safety, turn off the tractor before attaching the auger assembly to the gear box. Remove the key to prevent the possibility of someone else starting the tractor. Danger: Never use any bolt longer that 3½ to mount the auger assembly to the gear box. Warning: When attaching the PTO yoke to the tractor s PTO shaft, be sure that the yoke is secured to the PTO shaft. BEFORE YOU BEGIN Check over all pins, bolts and connections to be sure all are securely in place. Nuts and bolts should be snugged with wrenches; cotter pins should be in place and bent over or flared out with pliers. The twist collar at the splined PTO union should be secure. The PTO shaft should be bolted and pinned with the roll pin at the gear box. Replace any safety shields that may have been removed during installation. 7

1) Check to be sure you have received a complete borer. There should be a gear box, PTO shaft, boom assembly, auger with cutting edges (to be sold separately) and tip in a parts bag. In the parts bag, there should be a PTO roll pin, shear bolt and locknut, u-frame assembly bolt and nut and auger assembly bolts and nuts. 2) Lay out all the parts for assembly. Attach the gear box to the boom assembly with a clevis pin and insert the cotter pin into the clevis pin. Attach the tractor end of the boom assembly to the third point of the tractor. Make sure that the stabilizer arms on the tractor are in place. Now attach the u-frame assembly to the stabiliser arms on the tractor. With the pin in place raise the boom assembly and attach the u-frame assembly to the boom assembly by inserting bolt ( ¾ x 2 ¾ ) through the ears of the u-frame assembly and the mounting plate on the boom assembly. Secure the bolt with the locknut. 3) Check the clearance and reposition if necessary. 4) Remove the nut and bolt that hold the u - frame to the boom assembly mounting plate. 5) Hold the boom up with one hand and carefully swing the u frame down to the ground with your other hand. 6) Lower the boom to the ground with the gear box attached. 7) Remove the boom assembly and u frame assembly from the three-point hitch on the tractor by removing the spring clips and pins. 8) Replace the protective guard back over the tractor s PTO shaft for safety and to keep out dirt and water. 9) Clean all mud and dirt from the auger before long term storage to prevent rust and corrosion. Store the PTO shaft and gear box attached to the boom assembly if desired. Be sure all small parts and fasteners are kept together for convenient reassembly later. 4) Use the tractor hydraulics to raise the borer assembly to a height were the auger can be attached. Use the bolt and nut to attach the auger assembly to the borer. 5) Raise the borer so that the auger is not touching the ground. Insert the PTO shaft onto the tractor end. You should now connect the other end of the PTO shaft to the gear box shaft and insert the shear bolt into the 8 17

REMOVING THE BORER 5/16 hole. Secure the shear bolt with the locknut. Insert roll pin into the PTO shaft yoke at the gear box input shaft. 6) The borer is now ready for use. The final adjustments can be made by trial and error. Read all safety warnings and precautions in the manual as well as the specific safety precautions below. Warning: Turn off the tractor and remove the key before removing the borer. Warning: Do not operate the PTO when the angle created between the earth and the drive shaft exceeds 45 degrees. If the PTO shaft breaks or the universal joint fails, the PTO may rotate without support at both ends, resulting in personal injury and damage to the equipment. Caution: Be sure the auger is completely removed from the hole before moving the tractor. 1) To remove the borer from the tractor, disconnect the PTO shaft from the tractor by turning the twist collar. Remove the PTO shaft from the gear box by removing the shear bolt and roll pin. 2) Remove the auger assembly by removing the nut and bolt holding it on the shaft. 3) Using the tractor hydraulics, lower the boom as low as it will go. 16 9

Warning: Do not install a mounting bolt longer that 3½. A longer mounting will protrude on the turning auger possibility hitting shield and causing a safety hazard. (See cautions and instructions for shear protection in the maintenance section of this manual.) 10 15

SPECIAL OPERATING CONDITIONS Loose or Sandy Soil In loose or sandy soil, you may get a cleaner hole if you stop the auger before lifting it from the hole and start it again as soon as it clears the hole. This will throw the soil out away from the hole. Wet Clay/Obstacles In wet clay, be careful not to let the auger dig too deep or it may get stuck. If the auger does become stuck or if it stalls against roots or stones, turn off the tractor. Danger: Keep clear of the driveline until it stops completely. Entanglement will cause persona injury or death. Remove the PTO drive shaft from the gear box. Turn the auger post counter clockwise with a large pipe wrench. One complete reverse turn will usually free the borer. Restart the tractor and lift slowly with the tractor hydraulics to free the auger from the ground. If the auger is still stuck, turn off the tractor and use a shovel to dig down and free the auger. Once the auger is free from the ground, reconnect the PTO drive shaft and you are ready to start boring holes again. If the shear bolt has sheared, this will need to be replaced. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Operating Safety Notes Before operating the Borer, read all safety precautions page 1 & 2 of this manual and the following specific safety instructions. Danger: Stay on the tractor seat whilst operating the borer. Serious personal injury may result if any attempt is made to assist borer operation by hand. Danger: Keep your clothing, yourself and others clear of rotating driveline and auger. Entanglement will cause personal injury or death. Danger: Allow the borer to stop completely and disengage the PTO from the tractor before contacting the auger. Danger: Keep shields and guards in place and in good condition. Danger: Do not climb onto the borer or exert downward force manually. Danger: Be sure drivelines are securely attached at both ends and that driveline shields turn freely on the driveline. Danger: Do not operate the PTO when the angle created between the earth and the drive shaft exceeds 45 degrees. If 14 11

the PTO shaft breaks or the universal joint fails, causing the PTO to rotate without support at the ends, injury may result. Warning: Turn off the tractor and remove the keys before working on the borer. Warning: Do not allow children or unqualified persons to operate this equipment. Warning: Never permit any person other than the operator to ride or board the tractor at any time. ALLOW NO RIDERS. Warning: Never use alcoholic beverages or drugs which can hinder alertness or co-ordination whilst operating this equipment. Caution: Be sure the auger is completely removed from the hole before moving the tractor. Caution: Before you operate the borer, check that all the pins, bolts and connections are securely in place. Caution: Always operate the PTO at or below the recommended speed of 540rpm. Higher speeds can cause equipment failure and personal injury. BORER OPERATION 1. Move and Position: The borer will hang in an appropriate vertical position when raised clear off the ground. With the borer clear of the ground, drive the tractor into position above the spot where you wish to dig. 2. Engage Drive: With the tractor engine idling at low RPM, engage the PTO. 3. Lower Borer: With the hydraulic power, lower the borer and allow it to bore to a depth or around 1 foot. 4. Clear Auger: With the power still engaged and the auger turning, raise the boom to lift the auger out of the hole. This will clear the auger, depositing the earth around the hole. 5. Lower Borer: Lower the borer again and allow it to dig another foot deeper. Repeat the steps of boring and clearing until you have reached the desired depth. 12 13
