National Tennessee District Chapter H Let s go riding! Harpeth Wings Chapter H Franklin, Tennessee We eat at 9:00 am, meet at 10:00 am at Shoney s Restaurant, Hwy 96 (exit 65) just west of I-65 in Franklin, 4 th Saturday of each month. Come join us at our next meeting October 27. Check out our Chapter webpage at http://www.chapterh.com Also our Facebook page at TNChapterH Volume 11 Number 10 October 2018 Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge Our Chapter Director Frank Vanderschaaf Chapter H Director triker51@yahoo.com (931) 698-2295 Chapter Soon to be Under New Management As you may know by now, Frank will be stepping down as Chapter Director at the end of the year. We are grateful to Frank for stepping in and serving as Chapter Director when the previous CD stepped down. When Frank steps down, Will & Thu Horsley have agreed to take over as CD. Note to newsletter recipients: If, for some reason, you do not wish to receive this newsletter any longer, please send a note to tnwingrider@me.com and you will be deleted.

Since Will is currently serving as the Chapter Treasurer, he will be relinquishing that position to Pat Eiting. Since Pat is currently serving as the Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinator, we need someone to volunteer to take over that position any volunteers? David will continue as Ride Coordinator and Newsletter Editor and Karen will continue to serve as webmaster. Jim will stay on as the Assistant Chapter Director. There are also rumors from National that the position of Chapter Rider Educator is to be reinstated but in a revised format. Don t know what the changes will be but I guess we ll find out before too long. Report from the Region N Couple of the Year Karen & David Hill As usual, we have been busy. The rally we attended in September was Rally In the Valley in Waynesville, NC. This was the North Carolina District rally and, as usual, they had a good rally (not as good as Spring Fling though). If you didn t go, you missed a good rally. Are we upset that we were not selected as the International Couple of the Year? The short answer is NO, we re not upset. There were several very good couples who would have been very good ambassadors of GWRRA. The couple selected will do an excellent job. It was a good year leading up to Wing Ding. We had a lot of fun attending the various district rallies. We tried to help the districts any way we could, usually by judging various events. At the North Carolina rally, we were 2 of the judges for their District Couple of the Year selection. Judging the COYs is always difficult since all the couples participating usually are worthy of serving as the District COY. We are honored to have been selected as Couple of the Year for our Chapter, for our District, and for our Region N. It has been a wonderful journey and yes, we would do it again. One thing that Karen always points out we were selected as the FINAL Region N Couple of the Year we can never be replaced!

By angling mirrors outward, the rider can expand and optimize the rearward view while still seeing everything behind. Illustration by Kimberly Chapman.

You wouldn t ride with a blindfold on. Nor would you ride with blinders to obscure your peripheral vision (like horses wear). Yet, many riders keep their right and left mirrors adjusted in a way that provides the narrowest view (including an excellent view of their elbows). Next time you hop aboard your bike, and before you pull away, take a careful look into each mirror. What do you see? Is the view in the left mirror virtually the same as the view in the right mirror? How much of the scene behind you can you see in both mirrors? If the scene is largely duplicated by each, try angling both mirrors outward to expand the width of your overall view. The ideal adjustment allows you to see a vehicle directly behind in either mirror but with minimal overlap of that image. You should have a distinctly different view to the outside of the mirror now as well. The left mirror should reveal more of the space adjacent to your bike on the left (where cars pass), and the right mirror should expand the view of the space to the right of your bike (where merging vehicles appear from), significantly expanding your total rearward view. While we re talking mirrors, it s a good time to consider what other drivers see. Car drivers have a rearview mirror mounted on the windshield that provides exactly what the name suggests: a rear view. Cars also have two side-view mirrors mounted to the outside of the vehicle on the right and left side. Unfortunately, despite the name, those mirrors are typically adjusted inward to take in the same rearward view as the inside mirror. That means that vehicles including our motorcycles are easily obscured from the driver s view. Be aware as you ride alongside other vehicles; if you can t see their reflection in the mirror, they can t see you! Ride Coordinator We have already had some good rides. Plan to join us on our next ride which will be on Saturday, October 13 to the Olive Pit in Paris. Details will be forthcoming in a day or so. By the way, if you have any suggestions for chapter rides, please let me know (tnwingrider@me.com). Ride to the Monster Truck Mash Last year we had two Ride to the Races at Highland Rim Speedway near Nashville and saw some spectacular crashes. Since then many folks have asked when the Bandit trucks (big rigs, semis) will race at Bristol Motor Speedway in eastern Tennessee. Well, now we have a date... Saturday, October 27th! The Bandits will have a demo race as part of the Halloween Monster Truck Mash. There will be eight monster trucks competing in two events, several jetpowered machines, and the Bandits who will show off their racing skills on the steep banks (36 ) of Bristol Motor Speedway in an exhibition race. If you haven't seen a Bandit Race yet (or even if you have), come on out and enjoy the fun. Gates open at 1 p.m. for the Monster Truck Trunk or Treat Party for the kids in the infield and the kids costume contest. At 3 p.m. the show begins with the monster trucks, jet-powered machines, and the Bandits. General admission tickets are $20 in advance ($25 day of). Kids 12 and under are only $5. Advance tickets may be purchased at: https://www.ticketmaster.com/venueartist/222143/ 1129359. Event details are in the attached flier and on the Bristol Motor Speedway website. This would be a fun chapter ride. If you go, let s sit together in the The Allisons Section P along the frontstretch. If this event is live-streamed you will see it at www.banditseries.com/livestream. This track is in the Eastern Daylight time zone, so plan accordingly. If you have questions, call or text Karen Hill at 410-490-6862.
