Geneal Infomation Hello Membes of the 01 laze and Dum Line! I hope you ae as excited as I am to begin anothe incedible season of maching pecussion with the lackman High School and! Whethe this is you fist time expeiencing this activity, o if you ae a etuning membe of the dum line, you ae in fo a fantastic yea of dumming This packet contains all of the infomation and music that you will need to pepae fo the clinics and the season I look fowad to seeing new and familia faces ove the coming weeks as we pepae to become the best section in the laze and! Additional Music equiements Always pactice with a metonome uad dummes play all of the music on dum as well as aound the dums dummes play the snae pat (unison) and the split pat (except fo the Cadence) e familia with the splits fo each dum; you may be asked to move aound the bass line duing the clinics ack and cymbal playes will play the snae dum pat fo the execises Cymbal playes will need to be in good physical shape The pimay equiement to make the Cymbal Line is physical stength Thee ae a lot of flips and ticks that the cymbals do that equie uppe body stength to pefom Expectations Attitude- The most impotant thing that you need to have is a good attitude If you have a desie to lean and a willingness to make changes, you will be successful in this goup Discipline- Something that will be taken seiously is ou discipline duing eheasal If we ae to positively impact the cultue of the maching band, we must take ouselves seiously and be intentional with ou actions Pepaedness- An impotant habit to develop is to always be pepaed When asked to memoize you music, you need to do that befoe the next eheasal When going out to the eheasal field, you must always have you music and coodinate sheet with you espect- This coves many things: listening to any instuctions that ae being given, taking cae of equipment, and teating you classmates with espect while you ae a membe of the dum line Fun- Don t foget that playing dums should be fun! We will be seious when we need to be, but keep in mind that being good at something is way moe fun than being teible Positions in the Dum Line Eveyone who wants to be in the laze and Dum Line can be While it would be nice to give eveyone a spot on thei fist choice of instument, we only have a cetain numbe of dums at lackman, and we also need to have cetain atios of each instument to sound good e open to leaning something new and unexpected Depending on how many people audition, we may mach with: Snae Dums 4-6 uads 6 Dums 6 acks 5- Cymbals

Technique Geneal Appoach elaxed- As you play, stay completely elaxed fom you waist up We need to play with the top half of ou body, while the bottom half gets us whee we need to go ebounded- Each stoke, high o low, will utilize ebound fom the dum the same way Wist Initiated- Each stoke is initiated fom the wist end at the wist as if knocking on a doo ( dums will otate as if opening a doo knob) Do not lift the stick by opening up the finges o by aising the am Stoke Types Full- stat up and end up; utilize the natual ebound of the stick Down- stat up and end down; use the weight of you elaxed hand to stop the stick without squeezing Tap- stat down and end down; a mini vesion of a full stoke Up- stat down and end up; fist half tap, second half full DynamicsHeights In pecussion, stick heights ae used to play dynamics These heights ae measued in inches ( ) The stoke is always the same (elaxed, ebounded, and wist initiated), only the heights dictate the dynamics P = 3 15 of a full wist tun; you stick will be paallel to the dum mp = 6 5 of a full wist tun = 9 35 of a full wist tun; you stick will be at a 45-degee angle f = 1 45 of a full wist tun; you stick will be at a elaxed vetical ff = 15 55 wist tun and slight am lift; sticks will be vetical AccentsTenutoStaccato Makings Accents () should be played at the coesponding heights listed above Unaccented notes should geneally be played at piano3 Tenutos (-) afte an accent mean to use natual decay, just like we do fo flam taps Tenuto (-) on a buzz means to hold out the buzz fo the full note value Staccato () on a buzz, it means to play the buzz as sepaated and shot as possible

Snae Dum Gip ight Hand- The fulcum (pivot point) is located between the thumb and the index finge This pivot point should be located at the optimal balance point of the stick, which is geneally located about 13 up the length of the stick fom the butt end The est of the finges should be wapped natually aound the stick They should be loose and elaxed (like a cadle) You ight am should be natual Left Hand- The left stick will sit in the webbed aea (fulcum) between the thumb and fist finge The finges we will then make a elaxed C shape The thumb will touch the fist finge at the last knuckle; the middle finge should always stay in contact with the stick The stick will sit on the cuticle of the ing finge Set Position The beads of the sticks will est in the cente of the dumhead, 1 inch apat and 1 off the head The sticks will ceate a downwad angle, leaving the space of two finges above the im Othe ead Positions- Guts and 1:00 Notation

Cossoves When cossing ove, it is vital to maintain sound quality, technique, and heights Thee ae two types of cossoves: The thumb cossove is pefomed diectly at the thumbs o fulcum Used between two adjacent dums The wist cossove is pefomed diectly whee the wist tuns to execute a stoke Used between dums 1- dums apat Notation
