Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 3 1. Plan the place for the standard components in the presence of the customer. Make sure that the customer sits on the driver s seat to get a real feel of operating the components of the car solution. Refer to the Graphic (1) for the most suitable places for the components. However, your decision should be based on the vehicle s Interior as well as on the customer s preferences. Mount the microphone approximately 30 cms (around 1 ft) from the driver s head, and position it such that it points towards the driver s mouth. The remote control button should be located in a place such that it is within easy reach of the driver. Make sure that the deployment of the airbag is not blocked or impaired in any way. Mount the loudspeaker a minimum distance of 1 m (around 3 ft) away from the microphone to avoid feedback. You can use the radio loudspeakers for audio output, if possible. Do not mount the handsfree unit inside a closed metal housing or in a place inside the car where it would be shielded from radio waves because this may impair the use of the Bluetooth wireless technology feature.
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 4 2. Plan the place for all enhancements in the presence of the customer. a) Mobile holder, data cable, and antenna coupler: Make sure that the display of the mobile phone is clearly visible to the driver but does not impair the control or operation of the car. In addition, the keypad of the mobile phone should be within easy reach of the driver. You can use the mount that comes with the car solution kit to install the mobile holder in a suitable location. However, make sure that there are no visible boreholes. Mount To connect the handsfree unit to a mobile phone by using a Pop-Port connector, you need to install a data cable along with the mobile holder. You need an antenna coupler if you install an external antenna along with the Nokia Advanced Car Kit. Make sure that the antenna coupler is compatible with the mobile holder that you install.
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 5 b) Antenna: If you decide to install an external antenna, first identify the most appropriate type of external antenna: windshield GSM antenna, roof-mounted GSM antenna, or roof-mounted multifunctional GSM/radio antenna. Then, plan the place for the antenna in the presence of the customer. Note that the antenna is not included in the sales package. Windshield GSM Antenna: Install a windshield antenna if the network coverage of the area is reasonably good. Roof-mounted GSM antenna: Install a roof-mounted GSM antenna if the target location has shadow areas with weak network coverage and you cannot replace the radio antenna with a multifunctional antenna. Roof-mounted multifunctional GSM/radio antenna: Install a roof-mounted multifunctional GSM/radio antenna if the target location has shadow areas with weak network coverage and the vehicle has a compatible roof-mounted radio antenna. Maintain a minimum distance of 20 cms (around 8 in.) between the antenna and all persons. 3. Before you begin any installation work, you should thoroughly inspect the vehicle for normal operating conditions. Perform all the checks mentioned in the Check-in checklist and review the findings with the customer before they leave. You can download or print the checklist from the Job Aid section of the Installing Nokia Car Solutions e-learning course.
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 6 4. Next, you need to identify the terminals for connecting the four wires that make up the cable harness of the car solution. Main Supply (Red) wire: You need to connect the main supply wire to a main supply terminal. Locate a main supply terminal/wire, which has a constant +12 V power supply. For example, you can find it on the: Car battery Fuse box Car radio Radio Mute (Yellow) wire: A Nokia Car Solution offers a feature that can mute the car radio automatically during a phone call. To enable this feature, you need to connect the radio mute wire to the radio mute terminal on the car radio, if available. If the radio does not support the mute feature, use a relay to provide the mute feature with the consent of the customer. However, read the car radio manual before touching any wires behind the car radio. Ignition-sensing (Blue) wire: To enable the ignition-sensing functionality, you need to connect the ignition-sensing wire to either of the following: The ignition-sensing wire/terminal in the fuse box The radio position-sensing terminal/wire behind the radio Some vehicles do not come with an IGNS connection. This connection is not necessary for operation of the Advanced Car Kit; the blue wire can be left unconnected. Ground (Black) wire: You need to connect the ground wire to a ground point on the chassis of the car. The most common places where you can find a ground point are: Near the battery Near the fuse box Under the glove compartment
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 7 5. Turn off the car ignition and disconnect the car battery before beginning with the installation work and ensure that it cannot be reconnected inadvertently. Remember that modern automotive systems include onboard computers where key vehicle parameters are stored. Improper disconnection of the vehicle battery may cause loss of data, necessitating extensive effort for re-initialization of the system. If you have any concerns, contact the vehicle dealer before any installation work is done.
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 8 6. Wash your hands and remove the upholstery parts that must be removed to perform the installation. Typically, you would need to remove upholstery around the car radio, the glove compartment, the internal roof light, A-pillars, and the fuse box as well as below the steering wheel. If you install a roof-mounted GSM antenna, you also need to remove parts of internal roof upholstery. Then, install the components in the planned location, hide the cables behind the upholstery, and bring the cables under the glove compartment where you need to install the handsfree unit. Do not apply force to pull out any part. You should be very careful because some parts of the dashboard might be fitted with hidden screws behind or inside the dashboard. Use a mounting plate to install components for which there is no ready room. You can use a factory-made mounting plate or create a mounting plate. Make sure that you hide the screws used to install the mounting plate.
Job Aid: Advanced Car Kit 9 7. Next, make the electrical connections for the four wires of the cable harness to the terminals identified in the planning phase. The Nokia Car Solution requires 12 V to work. If the vehicle has a 24 V electrical system, use a voltage reducer between the vehicle s electrical system and the car solution wires. Install the voltage reducer between the fuse terminal and the fuse of the main supply wire. Refer to the installation guide of the voltage reducer for more details. Voltage reducer Use crimp-on connectors, where applicable, to connect the wires of the car solution to the terminals.
