PAGE 2 Chapter Director: Wow and awesome were just two of the words I overheard used by attendees at our recently completed district rally to describe how they liked it. Lots of smiles and laughs seemed to be the order of the weekend. What a joy. There were plenty of things to do including two poker runs, lots of vendors selling those all-important safety chrome accessories and lots of games to play. Then there was the talent show, a lighted bike show and the annual couple of the year and individual of the year selections. Congratulations to all winners. Then there was the climax at closing ceremonies, the drawing for a brand new GoldWing! The winner was not in the house, but you cold sure hear how excited he was over the phone when Rick called him to pass on the good news. Well, this will be my last article for the monthly district newsletter since I resigned my position as Asst. District Director as of the close of the rally. It s been really fun serving our district, but I need to direct my efforts toward dealing with some medical issues. Nothing critical but will take some time. Also, I ve assumed the position of Chapter Director for my home chapter, FL1-H2, so I ll be around. That will cover it for now, so keep smiling and ride safe. See ya at an event soon. Ride safe. ORLANDO, FL. PAGE 3 The Honda Gold Wing is a very successful series of touring motorcycles manufactured by Honda. Gold Wings feature shaft drive, and a horizontally opposed engine. Introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in October 1974, the Gold Wing went on to become a popular model in North America, Western Europe and Australia, as well as Japan. Total sales are more than 640,000, most of them in the U.S. market. Gold Wings were manufactured in Marysville, Ohio from 1980 until 2010, when motorcycle production there was halted. No Gold Wings were produced for the 2011 model year; and production resumed in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan in 2011 using tooling transported from the USA factory. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (ja) includes a Honda Gold Wing GL1000 manufactured in 1974 as one of their 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology. Through 2012, Honda GL models have appeared eighteen times in the Cycle World list of Ten Best bikes. Over the course of its production history, the Gold Wing had many design changes. Beginning in 1975 with a 999 cc (61.0 cu in) flat-four engine, by 2001 this had grown to a 1,832 cc (111.8 cu in) flat-six. The 2012 model had anti-lock braking, cruise control, electrically-assisted reverse gear, an optional airbag, a fairing with heating and an adjustable windscreen, panniers and a trunk, a pillion backrest, satnav, and a six-speaker radio/audio system with MP3/iPod connectivity. In 1972, following the success of the ground-breaking CB750 superbike, the company assembled an R&D design team to explore concepts for a new flagship motorcycle. The project leader was Shoichiro Irimajiri, who in the 1960s had designed Honda s multi-cylinder MotoGP engines and their Formula One V12 engine. [ Simultaneously, at the 1972 Tokyo show, Honda revealed the CVCC "clean-burn" car engine, their first production liquid-cooled engine.(soichiro Honda was allegedly unconvinced that liquid-cooling was superior to air-cooling, but younger engineers eventually prevailed). M1 prototype & Project 371 During its development, the CB750 was known within Honda as their "King of Motorcycles";so Honda's next big thing would be deemed the "King of Kings". In 1972, the project team broke from Honda practice to produce an experimental prototype motorcycle, code-named "M1". Instead of the usual transverse engine layout with a chain final drive, the M1 had a longitudinal engine suitable for shaft drive. The MI had a 1470cc liquid-cooled flat-six engine, (twice the displacement of the CB750). Instead of seeking high performance (as some engineers had wanted) the M1 engine was designed to have a broad torque output and to produce 80 horsepower (60 kw) at 6700 rpm, with a top speed of 220 kilometers per hour (140 mph). The brainstorming project team's M1 was never intended as a production prototype. Nonetheless, the M1 should be seen as the primordial Gold Wing because so many of its distinguishing features appeared on the GL1000. The flat-six gave the M1 a low center of gravity, enhancing stability, but the extreme length of the engine/gearbox unit resulted in a cramped riding position. Instead, the project team chose to build a bike with a compact one liter flat-four engine. This bike was code-named "Project 371", and Toshio Nozue (who had worked on CB750 development), took over from Irimajiri as project leader. Powertrain pedigree. The 1974 Gold Wing with its flat-four shaft-drive powertrain used technologies both from earlier motorcycle and automotive designs. Although preceded by the 1971 water-cooled Suzuki GT750 two-stroke triple, the Gold Wing was the first Japanese production motorcycle with a water-cooled four-stroke engine. In 1934 Zündapp used a flat-twin for their K800, progressing to a four-cylinder boxer engine. The 1953 500cc Wooler flat-four improved upon the Zündapp, with OHV and plunger suspension. The first fourcylinder boxer was produced in 1900, and by the 1970s flat-four engines were being manufactured by Subaru, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, VW, Porsche and Citroën. A mildly modified Citroën flat-four engine was used to power the BFG 1300 touring bike, which was used by the French police in the 1980s. (CONTINUED PG4)

Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers. Mar 21-23 40th Florida Dist Gathering Altamonte Springs, FL Target market, Honda first envisaged the Gold Wing as a large sport motorcycle, but on learning that customers were "piling miles on touring", Honda reconsidered the bike s design objectives, realizing that the primary market for the Gold Wing was the long-distance motorcyclist. In North America a motorcycle suitable to that task would need comfort for the long haul, wind protection, a smooth ride, a comfortable seat, luggage storage, and power in abundance. In American in the early 1970s, long-distance motorcyclists had only a few manufacturers to choose from: Harley-Davidson, Moto Guzzi and BMW. The H-D Electra Glide was a comfortable, high-maintenance and high-vibration bike with a loyal cult following. It faced strong competition from Moto Guzzi's 850cc Eldorado. BMW motorcycles were smoother and more reliable, if expensive. Other large Japanese bikes, such as the Honda CB750 and the Kawasaki Z1 were cheaper but were not ideal tourers with their small fuel tanks and rear drive-chains needing regular maintenance. The Gold Wing was aimed at a newly-emerging market segment namely, a new kind of American long distance rider not likely to buy a Harley or BMW but who would open their wallets for an affordable machine offering comfort, endurance, low-maintenance and a smooth, torquey, quiet engine. The Gold Wing's secondary target market was Europe, where riders prioritized handling and performance over luxury. As I was visiting a chapter gathering recently I heard the former Chapter Educator, Jeff Duffey, speak about how slick and dangerous those white painted lines at corners, turn lanes, etc. can be. This brings up a very good point I think we all should be aware of. Often, during our early morning rides the dew just hasn t dried up quite yet. Keep in mind, then, when you pull up to that stop where that wide, thick, white painted line is going across the road, it may very well be slippery and you could lose your footing and take a spill. Keep in mind as well, those white arrows may also have oil drippings, etc. on them that will cause them to be very slippery and while you are in a turn could cause you to slide and/or spill. Just food for thought. Another thing I personally have seen here in Florida has been, (and I think there should be a law against it, my opinion), are lawn care companies blowing their cuttings into the streets, especially on back country roads. The clippings will definitely come up into even a full-face helmet on a trike. (Again, personal experience) Something to be careful of on a year-round basis here in Florida. On these back roads that we all love to ride we may find this Florida dirt that is called SAND and it gets all over some of these back roads. Something to be careful of because in a curve and especially a corner or turn, it can be extremely slippery, regardless of 2, 3 or even 4 wheels. More food for thought and I hope you re hungry for safety! ORLANDO, FL. From Your Florida District Directors Bill and Cheryl Smith (FL2-A, FL2-E, FL2-O, FL2-R) I told Carlos Lozano, our District Newsletter Editor, that our article was only going to be one word WOW! That about covers the 39th Annual Gathering of the Wings, aka: the Florida District Rally! We received several compliments about the Rally. Mostly about how much FUN it was and how organized everything was, and all summed up with a handshake or pat on the back saying, Great job! We also got some very good suggestions on how to make it better next year. More on this later in our article. We thank the Hilton management and their teams for helping make our event so enjoyable. They really bend over backwards to make sure everything is going well and that everyone is happy! Everyone on the District Team also did so much to ensure the attendees went away happy as well. Cheryl and I could not have asked for a better and more dedicated to FUN Team than the one we have. A special Thank You to the Chapter Volunteers who had FUN helping the District Team complete the tasks assigned to them over the course of the Rally. We can t list all the people who contributed to the FUN and success of the Rally but the biggest Thank You go to the Attendees! Without you the Rally wouldn t have been a success. Remember, there is no F_N without U! Congratulations to all the prize winners over the weekend. I m sure some of the other articles will list categories and winner s names. We think all who attended and had a FUN time are winners! The new 2019 Goldwing Raffle Tickets will be PURPLE, thanks to FL1-L2 Wesley Chapel for selling over 5000 tickets and will be available very soon! Look for word from Senior District Educator Rick Northrop for when they become available for you to sell and a get a shot of getting your Chapter s color for the 2020 tickets! Now to tell you about some of the changes planned for the 2019 Florida District Rally. It is the 40 th Annual Gathering of the Wings and the theme is: Wingin Out of this World with the FUNshine State! This can mean anything from space aliens to sci-fi shows to our own history of space exploration. Let you imagination run with this one! Seminole Powersports will again be sponsoring the Goldwing and some of the Grand Prizes. Thank you, PAGE 7 Congratulations to Carl and Kathy Williams on being selected the 2018 Florida District Couple of the Year! Congratulations also go out to Jan Hicks on being selected the 2018 Florida District Person of the Year! Chapter FL2-L, the Lakeland Fireballs, are the 2017 Florida District Chapter of the Year! They will receive special seating at the 2019 District Rally Closing Ceremonies! Seminole, for your continued support of the Florida District! Make plans now to join us at the Altamonte Springs / Orlando Hilton Resort on March 21st 23rd, 2019! We will have an exclusive to the Hotel and parking lot! There will again be the motorcycle only parking lot. We will be moving Rally Registration to the inside vendor area, the Royal Palm Ballroom. This gives our inside vendors more exposure, our attendees a chance to see their products right away to make sure you get to get what you want before they run out and it gives Rider Ed and Motorist Awareness more room in the Convention Center Lobby. For those who want to ride their motorcycles during the Rally we will be having Guided Rides for you to see and enjoy the areas away from the traffic! Yes, there are some very scenic areas just a short distance away from the I-4 corridor! We hope to move the outside vendors closer to the building, so it is easier for you to go out and visit and make your purchases easier to bring back to your room! Speaking of rooms, we will be expanding our room block but still don t wait to make your reservations. There will still be a chance of selling out as the Rally gets closer. There are many other good suggestions we received that we will try to implement so keep an eye on the Florida District Website (www.gwrraflorida.com) and this newsletter for reports on changes for the better. If you have any suggestions pass them on to your Chapter Director, your Assistant District Director or email me directly. As I said at Closing Ceremonies We love input! Another Riding event is being planned by the Florida District Team. A tentative date is October 6th, 2018 so save that date! Details will be shared as the date gets closer and we have more concrete plans! Now some news about the SE Florida Chapters and events: On March 3rd FL2-E, Miami, sponsored a 2018 Goldwing reveal at JM Honda in Miami. On March 10th FL2-R, Ft. Lauderdale, sponsored a 2018 reveal and test ride at Rick Case Honda in Davie. Cheryl and I test rode a DCT Goldwing Tour and it is an amazing ride. On March 31st FL2-A, West Palm Beach, enjoyed the Ride for Meadow. It s was a benefit ride to build a playground, Princess Park Memorial, in memory of the Stoneman Douglass School shooting victims. On April 21st FL2-O, Stuart, is having a 35th Anniversary Lunch at Lakeside Grill, 1111 Parrot Ave Okeechobee. The event goes from 11am to 2pm. Please RSVP to Barb Parish at barbparsh@hotmail.com. Cheryl and I hope you had a safe ride home from the Rally and enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! Hope to see you at a GWRRA Event very soon! We have FUN in the FUNshine State!
