FRONTLINE 2017 Issue 03 Dedicated to the Success of the Acura Retail Sales Professional More than an Update: The 2018 TLX (page 4) MDX Sport Hybrid vs. Lexus RX 450h (page 2) Interview: TLX Tour Precision Crafted Training (page 6) Inside the Acura Sport Hybrid Family (page 8) COSE Takes a Trip to Miami (page 11) Choosing the Right Acura SUV (page 12)

MDX Sport Hybrid The Newcomer Has an Edge MDX Sport Hybrid vs. Lexus RX 450h Two premium automotive brands use hybrid technology to increase both the performance and fuel efficiency of their best-selling luxury SUVs: Acura and Lexus. As a result, forward-thinking clients are likely to compare the MDX Sport Hybrid and the RX 450h, both of which sit at the top of their respective model lineups. Both companies have a reputation for thorough engineering and quality execution, so they are strong competitors. Yet the new MDX Sport Hybrid has surprising advantages that change the conversation about advanced SUVs. Then again, what would you expect from an SUV that shares core hybrid engineering with the NSX supercar? Read on to see how Acura has raised the bar and challenged Lexus. 2

The MDX Sport Hybrid: A Remarkable List of Advantages More Combined Power With the electric motors and gasoline V-6 engine, the Acura has more peak combined horsepower: 321 vs. the Lexus 308. 1 Less Weight The MDX Sport Hybrid weighs 269 pounds less than the RX 450h (4471 lb. vs. 4740), which gives the Acura a power-to-weight advantage. Stronger Acceleration More power and less weight mean the MDX is truly a Sport Hybrid, accelerating to 60 mph in only 5.8 seconds, compared to 7.1 for the RX 450h. 2 Faster Transmission Acura s Dual Clutch Transmission provides lightning-fast shifts for decisive acceleration. Lexus Continuously Variable Transmission in the 450h is slower to respond. Sharper Handling Acura s rear Twin Motor Unit can provide torque vectoring when cornering, a handling enhancement that the Lexus RX 450h lacks. Bigger Wheels The MDX Sport Hybrid comes standard with 20-inch wheels, while 18-inch wheels are standard on the RX 450h. More Adaptive Ride The standard MDX suspension can stiffen and relax according to drive mode or driving conditions. Adaptive shock absorbers are an extra-cost option on the RX 450h. More Seating Space The MDX Sport Hybrid has three rows of seating with capacity for seven passengers. The RX 450h only has two rows and seating for five. More Cargo Space With the third row folded, the MDX Sport Hybrid has 38.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The RX 450h only has 18.0 cubic feet of space behind the second row. 3 Larger Fuel Tank The MDX Sport Hybrid has a 19.4-gallon fuel tank. The RX 450h has a surprisingly small fuel tank at just 17.2 gallons. Longer Driving Range Based on EPA-estimated highway mileage 4 (27 mpg vs. 30) and fuel tank capacity, the Acura has a maximum driving range of 524 miles vs. 516 for the Lexus, even though the Lexus has a slightly higher highway rating. At first glance, these two SUVs seem quite similar. The Acura, however, is faster, carries more passengers and can handle more cargo. And with its rear Twin Motor Unit allowing the outside rear wheel to apply more torque in a turn while the inside rear wheel provides subtle resistance, the MDX handles with remarkable agility this is indeed a Sport Hybrid. The Acura, with its Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD ) system and additional power is simply more engaging to drive. There s a reason we say Precision Crafted Performance. And yet clients shouldn t just take our word for it let a test drive prove the point. For more MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD competitive information and downloadable PDFs, go to AcuraLaunchTraining.com and search under MDX Competition. For the complete picture on the Acura hybrid lineup, look for the web-based training series on the Acura Learning Center. TLX Training Tour Behind the Wheel, Ahead of the Curve An Inside Look at the 2018 TLX Precision Crafted Training Tour with Gayle Darby From longer days and the great outdoors to the inside of air-conditioned movie theaters, summer is a time for fun and discovery. For us, it means the arrival of the refreshed 2018 Acura TLX and with it, Acura s Precision Crafted Training Tour. To understand what makes this tour special, we met with Gayle Darby, Acura s National Sales Training Manager. And for those who weren t or aren t able to attend, check in and keep up with the program on social media: #LiveInSportMode and #AcuraTLX. 6

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Gayle. My pleasure! Why is this launch so important for Acura? In many ways, this is more than your average model launch. Back when we launched the next-gen NSX, what followed was a wave of enthusiasm that inspired us to return to our roots. Precision Crafted Performance is in our DNA. It s guided so many of our achievements and this is a big chance to celebrate that. What makes this launch special for tour participants? The TLX is a highly competitive vehicle, inspired by the NSX with some of the most advanced features available. We re introducing a new A-SPEC trim package, which gives the TLX a more aggressive edge that clients will love. AcuraWatch is now standard. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD ) is now at a more competitive price point. Not to mention, this is the first Acura to feature the dualscreen ODMD 2.0 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all levels. Compared to other training events, what can participants expect to find unique about this event? Basically, total immersion. The car is the classroom! It s constant hands-on interaction from start to finish and it all comes to life the moment you get behind the wheel. Everything is designed to embody the idea of LIVING IN SPORT MODE, so you train at four consecutive venues, each one focusing on a different aspect of the TLX. You then reinforce your training by driving the TLX from one session to the next. What s the reason for this new approach? Many training events lack the hands-on component that dealership personnel really want. Anytime you have an engaging hands-on experience, you absorb much more, retain it for longer and walk away excited to share. It s more consistent with how people learn and this tour delivers exactly that. Which skills and knowledge will participants gain? makes the 2018 TLX so fresh and innovative, how every technology comes into play and how it benefits the driver. They ll know all the interior and exterior updates, how to use features like the ODMD 2.0, and how to overcome client objections with ease. Plus, they ll have several new, compelling stories to give these features context. How will the skills and knowledge impact dealerships? This sports sedan is inspired by the Precision Crafted Performance philosophy and that spirit really comes alive in the driving experiences. Participants will be able to speak to the vehicle s qualities enthusiastically and inspire action with the kind of confidence that only comes from personal experience. If there s one thing you want participants to walk away with, what would it be? Confidence. In Acura, our products and our future. What are the plans for sustainment after the event? We re planning to roll out a suite of sustainment initiatives from a social-media style collaboration tool for sharing real-time information, to an Acura Model Line product app and more. Altogether, this package will help Sales Consultants by providing continual updates during the course of the model year. How can people enroll in the training? Contact your DSM or DPSM to enroll you at LiveInSportMode.com. Better yet, if they simply call (866) 538-8581, the Acura Concierge will handle the enrollment legwork for them. There s still time and opportunities to attend. Any closing thoughts? We re heading into an ambitious evolution of the Acura brand, and the TLX is key to our success. This launch is a chance to appreciate our achievements as a pioneer, an innovator and, really, a disruptor of the status quo. There s a lot to be excited about, a lot to be proud of. Let s celebrate that. Besides learning about Acura s Precision Crafted Performance philosophy, participants will know exactly what Acura Frontline I 2017 Issue 03 7

Acura Hybrids One Big High-Performance Family Acura s Sport Hybrid Vehicles Share Industry-Leading Technologies With the brand-new 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid joining the 2017 RLX Sport Hybrid and the award-winning 2017 NSX, Acura now has three vehicles that feature the advanced Acura Sport Hybrid system. The NSX supercar is clearly the pinnacle expression of Acura Precision Crafted Performance, but it s important to note that the RLX and MDX Sport Hybrids are built around the same innovative concept. Many unique features combine to make all three Sport Hybrids Acura s most powerful and technologically advanced vehicles. 8

Torque Vectoring The heart of Acura s hybrid technology is the 3-motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD ) system. This groundbreaking technology was first offered in the RLX Sport Hybrid, then refined for the NSX supercar and, most recently, built into the MDX Sport Hybrid. The 3-motor Sport Hybrid system features a gasoline engine and a trio of electric motors. One electric motor turns with the engine, helping to drive the front axle in the MDX Sport Hybrid and RLX Sport Hybrid, or the rear axle in the NSX. Two more electric motors are positioned at the opposite end of the vehicle in the Twin Motor Unit (TMU). The TMU for the NSX is in the front, while the MDX Sport Hybrid and the RLX Sport Hybrid have the TMU in the back. 3-Motor System Fuel Efficiency or Performance? By sending a greater portion of the available power to the outside wheel in a corner while simultaneously applying regenerative braking to the inside wheel, the Twin Motor Unit s electric torque vectoring reduces the cornering load on the front tires, which helps reduce understeer and boost steering precision. To monitor the Sport Hybrid system from moment to moment, the RLX and MDX Sport Hybrids have a realtime Power Distribution Display, which graphically shows power flow from the engine and three electric motors. With the display, it s easy to see at a glance which motors are propelling the vehicle and when the hybrid battery is being recharged. Sport Hybrid Braking System Another Acura innovation is the Sport Hybrid braking system, which combines regenerative and friction braking. With regenerative braking, many hybrid vehicles have a brake pedal feel that s unconventional and sometimes off-putting. Acura s Electric Servo Brake System is designed to address that issue with precise control of the interaction between the regenerative braking system and the conventional hydraulic disc brakes at each wheel. The Electric Servo Brake System offers excellent feel and natural feedback for the driver through the brake pedal. Hybrid vehicles have long been associated with the pursuit of fuel efficiency at the expense of performance. The hybrids offered in North America by other manufacturers have almost universally been low-powered, efficient people movers. In the development of its lineup of Sport Hybrids, Acura took an entirely different approach. With a unique combination of a high-performance V-6 engine and an industryleading 3-motor hybrid system, all three Acura Sport Hybrids put the emphasis squarely on performance and an exhilarating driving experience. More than just straight-line speed, the Acura Sport Hybrid system also offers enhanced cornering agility made possible by torque vectoring (front wheels in the NSX, and rear wheels in the RLX Sport Hybrid and MDX Sport Hybrid). So, in an Acura Sport Hybrid, it s all about the excitement of the drive. And fuel efficiency is improved, too. It s a classic win-win. For more information on Acura Hybrid Technologies, go to the Hybrid Technologies page on AcuraLaunchTraining.com. Make sure you take the Hybrid Technology WBTs (SBW0031, SBW0033 and SBW0034), available in the Acura Learning Center. Acura Frontline I 2017 Issue 03 9

Acura SUV Lineup Finding the One Learn Your Clients Priorities and Put Them in the Perfect Acura SUV With the arrival of the 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid, Acura s SUV lineup is larger and more diverse than ever before. Starting with the RDX at $35,670* and topping out with the MDX SH-AWD with Advance and Entertainment Packages at $58,800,* the Acura SUV family covers a broad price and equipment spectrum. Helping your clients find the best fit from the 22 possible Acura SUV model codes is the key to sending them home in a new Acura that truly meets their needs. 12

Choosing the Perfect Size Does your client have a clear preference in terms of vehicle size? Drivers who don t need a great deal of interior space will appreciate the easy parking lot maneuverability of the RDX. It s about a foot shorter and four inches narrower than the MDX. In tight quarters, that may be a bonus. Room for Everyone For clients who require seating for seven passengers, the MDX is the only choice. But if seating for five passengers is adequate, Acura s SUV family offers some interesting options. The RDX has great front and rear headroom and legroom, and is well suited for four-passenger road trips (five passengers in a pinch). The MDX and MDX Sport Hybrid offer a wider cabin that has more hiproom and shoulder room, with a more open, roomy feel and substantially more total passenger volume (103.5 cu. ft. vs. 132.7 for MDX/131.4 MDX Sport Hybrid). With the MDX, you also have third-row seats, for those times when you need to shuttle a crowd. Room for Your Stuff, Too The MDX also offers more cargo space behind the second row of seating and more space when the second and third rows are folded down. Even with the third-row seats up, the MDX has 15 cubic feet of cargo space comparable to a midsize sedan trunk. And clever packaging in the MDX Sport Hybrid puts key hybrid components under the floor, so there s no loss of cargo space when compared to the non-hybrid MDX. Picking a Power Plant All three Acura SUVs offer standard V-6 power, but which engine best suits your client? The V-6 engines that power the RDX and gasoline-only MDX are closely related. The key difference is that the RDX has conventional port fuel injection, while the MDX has direct fuel injection. Direct Injection boosts efficiency, largely accounting for the MDX s edge in horsepower and torque plus it helps improve fuel efficiency. The RDX and MDX have identical combined EPA fuel economy ratings 23 mpg in front-wheel drive and 22 mpg in all-wheel drive/sh-awd when the MDX is equipped the Advance Package, which includes Idle Stop. The MDX Sport Hybrid has a slightly smaller 3.0-liter port fuel injection V-6 engine. It s paired with a three-motor Sport Hybrid system that makes this the most powerful SUV in the Acura lineup, with total combined system 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the Sport Hybrid model adds a 4-mode Integrated Dynamics System (with a new Sport+ setting) and exclusive Active Dampers that provide a firmer, more responsive ride when the vehicle is in Sport or Sport+ mode. The MDX Sport Hybrid also tops the fuel economy ratings of the all-wheel-drive RDX and MDX SH-AWD with a remarkable EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined. Factoring in Towing If your client plans on towing, the RDX can pull a 1500-pound trailer. For heavier towing needs, the MDX is the clear choice, with a 3500-pound rating (FWD) or a 5000-pound rating (SH-AWD). In both cases, the necessary trailer hitch and wiring harness are available as dealerinstalled accessories. Towing is not recommended with the MDX Sport Hybrid. Understanding the Drive Layouts Does your client need the all-season confidence of all-wheel drive (AWD) or do they lean toward the efficiency of front-wheel drive? The RDX and MDX are equipped with standard front-wheel drive that has advantages over the rear-wheel drive offered by some competing brands. With the weight of the engine positioned directly over the drive wheels, traction is improved, particularly in slick conditions where some rear-wheel-drive SUVs may be challenged. Packaging is also improved, leaving more room for passengers and cargo. As an upgrade, the RDX offers all-wheel drive with the Intelligent Control System for superior all-weather drivability. When the system senses a loss of front-wheel traction, it automatically transfers some power to the rear wheels. The MDX goes a step further with available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD ) that sends power to the wheels that need it such as to the rear outside wheel while cornering offering seamless fore, aft and side-toside power transitions. SH-AWD improves dry-weather handling and provides the four-season confidence of AWD. The MDX Sport Hybrid goes even farther with an advanced Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain very much like that of the RLX Sport Hybrid sedan. With power from the gasoline engine and an electric motor powering the front axle, and a pair of electric motors providing torque-vectoring power to each rear wheel, the MDX Sport Hybrid offers impressively agile handling all year round. This translates to a more secure, in-control experience for the driver.
