GTR Mailbag by Chuck Herrmann Hobby Industry News Tamiya Parts Panel and abs plastic as well. So, I bought some. This stuff is exactly the same as Tenax7R. The MSDS sheet shows it as a mix of MEK (methyl ethyl keotone) and Acetone, the same as Tenax. However the price is GREAT! You can buy a pint for $15. That s 16 bottles of Tenax that sells for $3.95 a bottle, $63.00 worth, for $15. Tamiya is releasing a series of Parts Panel which is a framed kit. Every detail of these kits has been carefully displayed on this wonderfully designed panel. The panel has a wooden frame and an acrylic cover which beautifully matches its contents. Adding to the quality finish of the panel is its aluminum nameplate. A unique serial number is placed on the back of each panel. The first subjects are Ferrari s, the Enzo and the Ferrari FXX in different colors. A bit pricey, the FXX is $1,009 USD! Also Tamiya will reissue their 1/12 Porsche 910. I have tried it and it works exactly the same way, and yes if you leave it open overnight it will evaporate as well, same as Tenax ( transferred mine to a bottle and what was left in the can disappeared in an hour) Just thought I d pass this along to my fellow modelers. Tim Leicht Venture Hobbies Now Don s Hobbies The Venture Hobby shop in Wheeling, which was recently shuttered for a while, has reopened under new management. Actually old management, former owner Don Phillips has reopened it as Don s Hobbies. Phone 847-537- 8669. Good luck, hopefully it remains open and their issues are resolved and we get the old Venture Hobby back, it was always one of the best shops in the area. Kit #12041 should be available sometime in September. A NEW WAY TO GLUE STYRENE While lamenting the demise of Tenax7R (most hobby sites have discontinued selling it) I have found a new alternative AND it s a lot cheaper! IPS Industries makes adhesives for many applications. Weld On #3 is labeled as acrylic cement. However, the product description on their website says it can be used for styrene Mattel Announces Partnership with the IRL Mattel has announced they have a four year deal with the Indy Racing League to produce Hot Wheel replicas of the current IRL cars. This will include 1/64 Hot Wheels as well as 1/24 scale die casts of some of the major teams and drivers. Check out www.mattel.com to see the planned releases. First Look: 1/12 Ford GT Mk II Kit by Trumpeter Kit: Ford GT 40 MkII Mfg; Trumpeter Kit #: 5403 Scale: 1/12 MSRP $269 By Tim Leicht The new Trumpeter s here! The new Trumpeter s here! I ve been reading that all over the Internet for the last month. Well, I got one. Now I d like to submit my intro review about this much anticipated kit that was the test shot hit of last year s National Hobby Show in Rosemont. Note: This subject of the kit is the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours winning car, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. Ed. replacement parts for the pricey kit to make it right. Well, the test shot of the GT40 was also at Stevens booth last year, also touted as a collaborated kit with Stevens. So, here we go again. Now, on to the kit. The BIG box is filled to the brim with parts trees and photo-etch pieces, and hardware. The body is nicely packaged in it s own box, along with another box with artwork just on it for the tires and logos. I ll get to them later. All sprues are separately wrapped in sealed bags. The wheels are prepainted, along with some odd sheet metal portions of some of the other parts. So, I m sitting here staring at this kit body and I can t help but think to myself I ve seen this before. So I go down to the plastic addict vault and dig out my Fujimi 1/24 GT40 and take a look. No, that s not it. Then, I go to my diecast cabinets and get out my Exoto 1/18 GT40 and get it out. Bingo! I turn over the car and look at the mounting holes and look at the bottom of the Trumpeter chassis plate and VOILA! The holes are in exactly the same place! It s as if they cloned that car into this kit! (See photo) Somewhere in China, there is a cad file I m sure, at the company who made Exoto s car. Now I know what the biggest influence was when Trumpeter tooled up their kit. The kit body is nicely molded with minor mold First, a little history about Trumpeter. marks and little flash marks. The doors open, and They are known for making some of the nicest front and rear body parts open. They nailed the military kits out there, with literally hundreds of subtle differences in the front fender curves choices from planes, to tanks, to guns, etc. Oddly between the Mark II and other GT40 s. This will enough, it is rumored that the company is actually clean up and paint very easily. I m sure someone owned by the Chinese army, as are many other is already working on aftermarket decals to make corporations in China. Their first foray in car kits other versions of this car. The rear photo-etch was a Chinese limousine, the type that grilles are nice, but the surround molded in plastic government officials are chauffeured around in. is way too thick. It s also chrome plated. All of the Then came the Chevy Nova and the Pontiac other photo etch body covers are nicely done and made in collaboration with Stevens International are carbon copies of the Exoto car. By the way, of the USA. There was a HUGE uproar over the the REAL 1966 Lemans winner is chassis satin chrome plating on one of those kits, to the #P/1046. According to Ronny Spain s book point that Stevens offered free chrome GT40, The car is currently owned by George GTR Auto Modelers Newsletter September 2009 5 of 10

Stauffer of Wisconsin. It was Shelby s main test mule after it won Lemans and then was shipped to Holman and Moody for the same purpose. Six owners later, it belongs to Stauffer. Now, on to the engine/transaxle. Here s where it gets interesting. The unit is a two piece upper and lower engine/transaxle that is painted gold, with the transaxle painted gunmetal. BUT, the sides of the block, the front engine cover, the pulley/alternator assembly, and the transaxle back cover and carburetor are separate pieces and chrome plated! HUH? And the pulley, alternator/belt assembly is way wrong, along with the valve covers, and there is no oil filter or plumbing. Oh, and there is no distributor! Yeah, a $200 kit with no distributor on the engine. Oh, and coincidently, the Exoto die cast doesn t have one either, just spark plug wires to nowhere. HHHMMMMM! Well, at least Trumpeter gave you $200 worth of chrome plating this time. Problem is, about 75% of all the chrome parts need to be stripped. Heck, one whole sprue could be dipped in Westly s right out of the box! Needless to say Trumpeter and Stevens were asleep at the wheel on this part of the kit. Suspension parts include working shocks with real coil springs. The shocks are nice, but all of the control arms and sway links are way too thick with giant loops at either end to clip to each other. The driveshafts are toy like with no moving parts like u-joints. Too bad Trumpeter couldn t go out and buy an old 1/12 Tamiya F1 kit and measure their arms and use their driveshaft designs with separate u-joints. That would make this kit much nicer! The brake calipers are non descript and the discs are nicely made two piece designs with vents but, they have some totally wrong big grooves molded into them, again toy like. Wheels are the nicest Halibrands I ve seen and separate metal valve stems are in the hardware bag. Tires? Well, where do I start? They are rubber, I think, not vinyl. They have all the right Goodyear Blue Streak tread marks and lettering except for one thing. There are no Goodyear letters on the tires, and no blue stripes to put on the tires. They did include some big honkin wrong Goodyear white transfer logos for the tires that are way too big. Aftermarket, are you listening? Here s an opportunity for you! The knock offs for the wheels look pretty close to scale. The interior has a nicely done dash, with decals provided for the gauges. The seats, well again, they are just plain WRONG. The rivet details on the seats are way too small, and they should have holes in them. Also there is a gell cell battery to be mounted on the floor. I don t think gell cell batteries were around in 1966. Just a thought The Exoto has one too. HHHHMMMMM! Fabric belts with photoetch buckles are provided in the hardware bag. All the glass is nicely done but, there is no relief on the glass as to where to black out the edges. The steering wheel is a two piece affair with a small diameter steel shaft going down to a pinion gear to meet up with a rack with some teeth on it. Very Bburago diecast like. OK, I m done beating this horse. I was really anticipating the arrival of this kit. But now, I am disappointed in so many ways, it s gonna be hard to want to build this kit. It has some really nice features but it also has some really bad ones. If you want a nice shelf model of this car, buy it and build it. If you want a fully detailed scale rendition of this car, keep looking. You haven t found it yet unless some aftermarket guy wants to tool up a LOT of parts to correct all the flaws of this kit. Stevens, you should be taken out to the wood shed and taken to task for this kit. A lot of the nasty stuff in this kit could have been easily corrected before production. I give this kit a C+ for it s nice body molding and poor engine bay and suspension detail. Somewhere along, I think you will see a built diecast version of this kit very soon using the same molds. Second Look: Lindberg/Model KingTriumph GT6+ Kit: 1969 Triumph GT6+ Kit #:95777 Scale: 1/25 MSRP $ 22.95 By Chuck Herrmann Last month I presented the first look at this kit. Since then I have learned more about it and have started building it so I wanted to update our readers. Apparently this is based on the old Pyro mold, which explains the multi piece body assembly. But there is a large Lindberg logo stamped onto the bottom of the floor pan. Once I heard it was a Pyro kit I hesitated to build it, fearing a difficult time but I decided to press on. On my example, when I glued the roof to the rear fenders, there was a large gap on the lower left. I was able to fill the gap. But the taillights on this car are not separate pieces, they arte molded in blobs (see picture) so I chopped them off and will finfd something from the parts box. Assuming I continue I will update this saga later. I am not suggesting that is an unbuildable kit, just be aware that it will take a lot of work to make it presentable. But isn t that the challenge of modeling? Mercedes SLR Race Car Transkit The front body is three pieces, the two fenders and hood, it went together ok but did need a bit of filling and sanding. However, the main flaw with this kit is the front window the opening is way too small, the A pillars would be about a foot wide! This will require enlarging it, the trick then will be to find something to use for the clear windshield. But I just could not leave that tiny window. There is a transkit by Meko Models Japan for the 1:24 Scale Mclaren-Benz SLR 722 GT race car to be used in conjunction with the Tamiya kit. Tim Leicht sends this photo of his recently acquired (via EBay) set. GTR Auto Modelers Newsletter September 2009 7 of 10
