4 PRODUCT BROCHURE ABB ABILITY WIRELESS MONITOR FOR SURGE ARRESTERS ABB is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries from natural resources to finished products. As title partner of Formula E, the fully electric international FIA motorsport class, ABB is pushing the boundaries of e-mobility to contribute to a sustainable future. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 135,000 employees. ABB offers a wide range of products up to 1200 kv that help enhance the reliability, efficiency and quality of power in transmission and distribution grids, power plants and industries while minimizing environmental impact. The wide product range is complemented by a comprehensive service offering. Surge arresters are critical components of modern power networks, which protect the transmission lines and equipment from lightning and switching surges.
APPLICATIONS 5 Applications Condition monitoring As a tool for reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) activities and enhancing reliability of the substation, condition monitoring has become an essential process. It involves continuous diagnosis of the equipment in service, record-keeping of historical data of performance parameters, trend analysis of events, and suggesting necessary corrective action to keep the equipment working effectively. Conventional surge arrester monitors display only the number of surges discharged by one specific surge arrester, and some of them also the instantaneous leakage current through it. This data is displayed locally, at the surge arrester, inside the substation. Such data give a vague picture of the surge arrester s condition. ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters provides meaningful infor mation on surge arrester condition and substation performance, enabling users to put intelligence into their maintenance. This cuts maintenance costs and reduces unplanned outages. Likewise, there are opportunities to optimize the maintenance of other equipment in the substation gaining knowledge of the overvoltage stress occurring during switching operations. ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters changes this. Along with recording the magnitude and timestamp of the discharge current, it also records the leakage current. For enhanced event investigation, the device also measures the ambient temperature and humidity. Data is tracked over time for trend analysis, paving the way for understanding and optimizing a substation s lifetime.
6 PRODUCT BROCHURE ABB ABILITY WIRELESS MONITOR FOR SURGE ARRESTERS Retrofitting installations From analogue to digital within one day ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters can be installed on the ground lead of any surge arrester. There is no need for any power supply or additional wiring. Even old surge counters with electromechanical counter display can be easily replaced with this new surge arrester monitor within one day. As easy as Plug & Play. This device is compatible with all type of surge arresters from ABB and other makers. ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters does not need any protective enclosure for on-field installation. It comes in a highly sealed enclosure with IP67 protection rating. With reliable and safe on-board power supply, in form of redundant Li-ion batteries and solar panels, there is no need for installing a separate AC or DC power arrangement for this device. Monitoring accuracy and data collection frequency of ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters are higher than con ventional surge arrester monitoring systems. With a wide array of measured parameters, the new Wireless Monitor offers substantially more advantage to users.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS 7 Features and benefits Remote monitoring ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arrester communicates via LoRaWAN TM (Long Range Wide Area Network) to transmit the data to the cloud platform. The LoRaWAN TM specification is a Low Power, Wide Area Networking (LPWAN) protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated things like sensors, to the internet in regional, national or global networks, and targets key Internet of Things (IoT) requirements such as data communication, end-to-end security and localization services. Data can be transmitted via public or private IoT networks. Using a single LoRaWAN TM gateway, the data can be transmitted over a wide area, with a radius of at least 10 km. Benefits of ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arresters installation Monitoring and analysis of multiple parameters Wireless transmission of recorded data Database access through cloud platform Secured, encrypted communication On-board, reliable power supply Best suited for retrofit and remote locations
8 PRODUCT BROCHURE ABB ABILITY WIRELESS MONITOR FOR SURGE ARRESTERS Technology Data communication ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arrester is an important part of ABB s offering for the Internet of Things (IoT). ABB has been advancing technologies for the IoT for more than a decade via its control systems, communication solutions, sensors and software. Its technologies allow industry, utility and infrastructure customers to make more intelligent use of data to optimize their operations, increase productivity and achieve greater flexibility. The measured and recorded data from ABB Ability Wireless Monitor for surge arrester is transmitted to a cloudconnected or on-site server, in a secure, encrypted format. From this server, the data can be accessed by the SCADA system, asset management or maintenance planning system of the user, or through an ABB Ability Ellipse APM (Asset Performance Management) platform.
