OPERATION ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURE Check and r~plenish coolant level, crankcase oil level and hydraulic system oil level. Depress clutch pedal and place gear shift lever in neutral. Starting motor cannot be actuated unless clutch pedal is depressed. Push fuel stop in and position throttle control lever at half throttle. Turn ignition starter switch to extreme right and hold until engine starts or for a maximum of30 seconds. If engine does not start within 30 seconds, release starter switch and allow starting motor to cool. Never reattempt to start engine until starting motor stops completely. (See Preheating Engine.) DO NOT USE LIQUID ETHER TO START ENGINE AS SEVERE DAMAGE WILL RESULT. When engine starts, release switch, immediately reposition throttle control lever to obtain maximum of 1000 rpm and check engine oil pressure gauge. Maintain 1000 rpm until engine oil pressure registers on gauge to provide initial lubrication to turbocharger. Allow engine to reach operating temperature before placing tractor under full load. If tractor must be pulled or pushed to start engine, place Over/Under Hydraul-Shift control lever in direct drive position and shift tractor transmission into sixth gear. Hold clutch in disengaged position until transmission comes up to normal speed of pulling unit. Slowly release clutch. If engine fails to start after pulling or pushing tractor, consult your dealer. A WARNING! CHECK TO BE SURE EVERYONE IS CLEAR OF TRACTOR AND DRAWN EQUIPMENT BEFORE STARTING ENGINE. 9278 PREHEATING ENGINE To start engine in temperatures ranging from 32 to 50 0 F. (0 0 to 10 0 C.), turn ignition switch on and push preheater switch for 30 to 35 seconds. In temperatures below 32 0 F. (0 0 C.), energize preheater for 40 to 50 seconds. Engage starting motor as soon as preheater switch is released. Do not engage starting motor while preheating. If engine fails to start within 5 to 10 seconds, preheat engine for 30 or 35 more seconds. Reattempt to start engine. Continue cycle until engine starts. Preheater may be used to keep engine running or smooth out initial operation if necessary. A WARNING! DO NOT USE ETHER WITH MANIFOLD PREHEATER OR THERMO-START ATTACHMENT. Ether may ignite and explode resulting in burning of the air cleaner elements or displacement of air cleaner hose. 4-9
