CHICAGO STAT Cougars Run Hard an CSU s Grounds Mechanic Michael Smith indicates the university s three-decade-long relationship with Martin Implement has been a significant factor in the development of the well-manicured, 161-acre campus. If Chicago State University gave grades to equipment in its fleet, the Kubota RTV utility vehicles would surely make the Honor Roll. The university s 14 RTVs are highly reliable and versatile machines, according to Michael Smith, grounds mechanic for CSU. Departments campus-wide, from the administrative staff to the locksmith to the grounds crew, use the vehicles year round. For some departments, the vehicles provide transportation for people, tools and equipment as they move around the 161-acre property. There s plenty of legroom and headroom, even with two passengers, Smith observed. For the grounds crew, the Kubotas are truly multiuse vehicles. Kubota built us an 1140 with a hydraulic broom and plow, and it is working out excellently. The broom is excellent for cleaning handicapped ramps, doorways and things of that nature it is just the right size. We use it to clear snow, to salt the campus and to clean up leaves and debris. Additionally, because of the hydraulic hook-up we can utilize all the attachments, Smith noted. The grounds crew also uses the 1140s and 1100s as snow plows and tow vehicles, pulling sprayers, spreaders, aerators and dethatchers. Thanks to the outstanding heating system in the vehicles, in the winter the crews can use them as a warming station, so they don t have to come all the way back to the plant to warm up. Smith said. Last winter, the machines were extremely reliable. We had no leaks and no bad starts. They started right up. Previously, CSU had a fleet of utility vehicles from a different manufacturer. The university retired the entire fleet and replaced it with the Kubotas, which are 100 percent more reliable, Smith said. Smith illustrates the RTVs superiority in any number of ways. The tires, for example, are a better grade than those on the competition, he said. He also finds the engine is more durable than on competing brands. As a mechanic, he also likes the ease of service the RTVs offer. The fuel and oil filters are highly accessible. Kubotas are in a different league compared to competitors in terms of ease of maintenance. CSU has been a Martin Implement customer for nearly three decades, and Smith praises the service he has received from any dealership department he has dealt with, including parts, service and the road team. Prior to that, he serviced CSU equipment while working in Martin Implement s Service Department. Keel has combined his technician and sales background by offering training classes on RTVs, skid steers and even chainsaws.
