PROFILE of KHoRDhA district 1. Introduction: Khordha district has a unique place in history as the last kingdom to be conquered by the British in 1803. Khordha is famous for the Paik revolution of 1817 led by Jai Rajguru and Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Dala Behera of Tapanga garh also took a leading role at that time. The district came into being with effect from 2 nd October 1992. 2. Location: Khordha district is one of the centrally located districts in Odisha. It lies between 84 o 55 to 86 o 5 longitude and between 19 o 40 to 20 o 25 latitude. It is bounded by the Cuttack district in north, Ganjam district in south, Puri district in the east and Nayagarh district in the west. It has an average elevation of 75 m (246ft). 3. Climate: The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April and May and cold during December and January The monsoon generally breaks during the month of July, Annual rainfall of the district was 1413.8 m.m. in 2014 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1408.4 m.m.). 4. Area and Population: The district has an area of 2813 sq.kms. and 22.52 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 1.81 percent of the states territory and shares 5.36 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 800 per sq. Kms.. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1534 villages (including 178 un-inhabited villages) covering 10 blocks. 10 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 297472 (13.2 %) and schedule tribe population 115051 ( 5.1 %). The literacy percentage of the district covers 86.9 against 72.9 of the state. 5. Agriculture : During the year 2014-15, the net area sown was 104 thousand hectares against 4474 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 3383272 quintals, 103 quintals maize, 196 1

quintals ragi, 40979 quintals mung, 5489 quintals biri, 1646 quintals kulthi, and 275 quintals till, 932 quintals groundnuts,169 quintals mustard, 44270 quintal potato and 59277 quintals sugarcane. During 2014-15, the total fertilizers used in Khordha district is about 9121 MT with a breakage of 6185 MT nitrogenous, 1769 MT phosphatic and 1167 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 46 Kg. 6. Irrigation : During the year 2013-14, it is reported by District Agriculture Officer that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 52655 hectares and 20346 hectares respectively from all sources. 7. Education : There are 1040 nos. of primary schools, 839 nos. of upprimary schools 380 nos. of Secondary schools and 54 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2014-15. Besides, there are 24 nos. of polytechnic schools and 84 nos. of engineering colleges in the district during year 2014-15 to impart technical education. 8. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 282 nos. of the govt. Allopathic medical institutions with 965 beds facilities, 28 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 22 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2013-14. 9. Veterinary Services : During the year 2013-14, 20 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 98 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Khordha district of provide veterinary services to the people. 10. Industry and Mining : Khurda is an important centre of handloom industry. The lungi, napkin and sarees produced here have an all Odisha market. Besides during the year 2014-15, 2187 nos. of small scale industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 10870.89 lakhs with 2176 nos. of Employment generated in Khordha district. 2

11. Power : Consumption of electricity in Khordha district during the year covers 1437.75 million units and revenue villages so far electrified as on 2013-14 is 1343 which constitutes 98.9 % to the total villages of the district. 12. Tourist : There are 19 nos. of tourist center such as Bhubaneswar, Dhauli, Khandgiri & Udayagiri, Nadankanan, Atri, Banapur, Barunei, Bhusandapur, Chilika (Barakul), Hirapur, Jayadev Kenduli, Gadamanitri, Rameswar,Madangiri (Mundiapada), Salia Dam-Barbara Hills, Kosalasuni,Thakuranipitha, Balipatna (Sisu Ananta Pitha),Shree Ananta Purusottam Dev (Jagulaipatna) and Sankat Mochan Mahavir Temple identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2015, the numbers of Domestic tourists were 82, 01,651 and foreign tourists were 41,011 who visited the tourists spots of the district. 13. Transport & Communication : During 2014-15 166 Kms. of National Highways,38 Kms. of state highways, 238 Kms. Major district roads, 599 Kms. of other district roads, 846 Kms. of rural roads, 3366 Kms. of Gram Panchayat roads and 249 Kms. of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 117.39 Kms. of Railway lines with 23 nos. of railway stations and passenger halts are continuing in the district. 14. Banking : As on December 2015, there were 578 nos. of All banks having 63132.37 crores rupees deposit and 33494.45 crores rupees credit in the district. 3
