World Class Design and Quality Transmission Gears There is a lot more to designing and manufacturing gears for automotive performance racing applications than applying standard text-book tooth design formulas and then using traditional off the shelf gear generating tools. There must be real understanding and strong committments in many areas. The four people most involved with gear design and manufacture at Andrews Products have over 80 years of cumulative experience. Gear manufacturing also includes investments in in-house gear design programs, state of the art CNC gear cutting machines and CNC inspection equipment. All Andrews Products gears are approximately 15% less weight than other top loader gears. The end result is the strongest, most reliable gears possible. All of these factors helps to put Andrews Products customers one step closer to the winners circle. Any of our eight CNC gear cutting machines can be programmed to produce tooth modifications which make it possible to design and manufacture the highest quality gear designs and the strongest, most reliable finished gear teeth. Cutting teeth on a Gleason CNC hobbing machine. Our CNC gear machines can create teeth with a number of different profile modifications on soft or heat treated teeth. These include profile and lead modifications. Finish grinding transmission gear teeth on a Hoffler Helix 400 gear tooth grinder. Gear Inspection The gear inspection process at Andrews Products is a continuous effort. Using a Zeiss CMM and two CNC M&M Precison gear inspection systems, all basic gear dimensions as well as tooth profiles can be quickly checked and verified. Gear tooth inspection includes overall pitch size, pitch circle runout, tooth involute profile, tooth lead error, and tooth crowning. This type of tooth measurement and inspection simply can t be done using traditional manual checking techniques. The use of computerized gear and cam inspection verifies the high quality level of the final product. Zeiss Coordinate Measuring Machine is used for both cam and gear parts. Two M&M precsion CNC gear Inspection machines Both were installed new in 2002. A typical summary chart from a CNC gear tooth inspection output. Rapid checks of tooth involute profiles, crowning, tooth pitch and a variety of other parameters are easily within the capability of this machine. GM Small Block Super Street Hydraulic Roller Cams When small block GM V8 engines were first intoduced in 1955, no one could have predicted this engine would still be in great demand for perormance applications 48 years later. Many different cam designs have been tried with varying levels of success. Today, most knowledgeable engine builders know what cam lifts, durations and lobe separation angles work for them. But there also have been subtle but very important changes. The greatest improvement in cam manufacture started 10 years ago with the introduction of computerized cam design and CNC electronic cam grinding. Every camshaft Andrews Products grinds is done on Landis 3L CNC cam grinders. We have not run mechanical cam grinders since 1996. The improvement in final camshaft quality was hard to imagine until we saw it for ourselves. Switching to electronic cam grinders and CNC cam inspection (Adcole 911 gages) resulted in the most significant improvements in cam quality that we have ever made.
