TRIMOD TM 300R INSTALLATION PROCEDURES TRIMOD TM 300R INSTALLATION PROCEDURES Before installing, operating, maintaining, or testing this equipment, carefully read and understand the contents of this manual. Improper operation, handling, or maintenance can result in death, severe personal injury, or equipment damage. SET-UP: Setup and testing of the recloser can be performed at maintenance facilities, test laboratories, or directly in the field once appropriate control supply voltage is made available. Connect the recloser to the control using the interconnection control cable. The recloser receives the necessary signal to open and close from the control circuitry. The control is powered from an external supply voltage but is also supplied with a battery backup system that is fully charged from the factory. The battery backup system, located in the control cabinet, is shipped in the off or disconnected position. For specific connection of the supply power to the control cabinet, refer to the control s wiring interconnection drawing supplied with each recloser assembly and the control being installed. Figure 5 shows a typical recloser, control and supply power interconnection layout. *Arresters are recommended to provide protection against lightning overvoltage conditions. When arresters are installed, they should be mounted on the supplied arrester brackets or as close to the recloser as practical. Figure 5: Typical installation detail 4

TRIMOD TM 300R INSTALLATION PROCEDURES MOUNTING: Hoist the TriMod by creating a sling that utilizes the lifting rings provided on the recloser frame base (See Figure 4 on Page 3). Mount the recloser on the pole or structure as shown in the specific drawings supplied with the recloser. Figure 6 provides details for the standard mounting base. Use extreme care in handling the recloser so that no force is exerted on the insulators/side bushings. Figure 5 shows a typical installation of the recloser and associated control. Figure 6: Standard mounting detail CAUTION: Follow all approved safety practices when lifting and mounting the recloser. Use the lifting HOLES provided on the recloser mounting frame. Lift the load smoothly and do not allow the load to shift. Improper lifting may result in equipment damage. Installation Notes: 1. The ring or hex nut assembly is set at the factory and should NOT be adjusted or retightened. 2. If the terminal pad is rotated, the connector bolt(s) must be loosened before turning the pad. Retighten the bolt(s) to 20ft-lbs. (two bolt connector style) or 25ft-lbs. (single bolt connector style) after repositioning. CAUTION: Rotating the connector without properly loosening the connector will apply excessive force on the terminal stud and could damage the interrupter assembly. Torque to 20ft-lbs. (2 bolt style) Ring nut assembly (requires no adjustment) HIGH VOLTAGE TERMINATIONS: The terminal connectors supplied with each recloser are aluminum alloy with standard NEMA two-hole drilling. The electrical connection at the terminal pad must be treated with Alcoa No. 2 joint compound or equivalent. Each terminal should be wire brushed through the compound to improve the connection. SURGE ARRESTER MOUNTING: Each recloser base has provisions for mounting an optional front bracket to support three customer provided surge arresters. A rear mounting bracket for three additional arresters is also available as an option. Refer to the supplied recloser drawings for specific installation dimensions. Since arresters are designed to provide lightning overvoltage protection, they should be mounted as close as practical to the recloser if the standard arrester brackets are not utilized. CONTROL WIRING: Control power must meet the requirements stated on the drawings supplied with the recloser control. Figure 5 shows the typical power supply connection. Each recloser and control cabinet assembly comes with a standard 14 pin interconnection cable that is keyed at each end to assure proper installation. Refer to the appropriate Joslyn control manual for programming procedures. Failure to comply may result in control and recloser misoperation. Figure 7: TriMod 300R Adjustment 5 GROUNDING: To assure maximum amount of protection for internal control components during possible power surge events, the recloser and control cabinet need to be solidly grounded together and separate from any installed surge arrester ground wires whenever possible. The recloser ground conductor can be connected to the supplied #10-2 AWG ground lug located on the recloser s frame base. All separate ground wires should be connected to the main ground wire at the same ground point below the control cabinet. Figure 5 is provided to highlight these grounding details.

TRIMOD TM 300R INSTALLATION PROCEDURES USE WITH SEL CONTROLS NOTE: If the 351R or 651R control is supplied by Joslyn Hi-Voltage then these modifications are done at the factory. If the 351R or 651R was purchased directly from Schweitzer than perform these modifications. When a TriMod 300R is used with a standard SEL 351R or 651R control, a wire harness is required to route the necessary power to the reclose through the standard SEL 14 pin cable (SEL Part No. C510). The use of this wire harness eliminates the need to connect a separate power cable between the SEL 351R or 651R controls and the TriMod 300R recloser. 351R BATTERY HARNESS FUSE REPLACEMENT Replace 3amp fuse with 5 amp fuse provided with Trimod 300R. Replace fuse SEL DUTY MONITOR SETTINGS If the 351R or 651R control is not supplied by JHV, the control s duty monitor settings will require adjustment to match the increased capability of the TriMod 300R. The setting changes can be made using hyperterminal under Access Level 2 (refer to the 351R QuickStart for programming details if required.) The following are the setting details: 351R Wiring Harness The following steps are provided to install the wire harness. The AC power should be removed from the control and the batteries disconnected. 1. Remove AC power and disconnect the control batteries. 2. Unplug the J5 connector from the control. 3. Install the new wire harness by plugging the new J5 connector into the relay, plugging the existing J5 connector into the harness and connecting the wire terminal to the ground spade on the 351R or 651R relay. Note that the existing ground cable must first be removed and then reinstalled on the new harness spade connector assembly. Connect ground terminal 651R Wiring Harness Plug new J5 harness into 651R 1. Change the recloser wear monitor from Auto to Y using the Set FZ command at the Level 2 prompt. Step through the setting options to the Recloser Wear Monitor setting. The following are general setting steps: Set FZ Reclose Wear Monitor = Y <Save Settings> 2. TRIMOD TM 300R TESTING TRIMOD TM 300R TESTING ELECTRONIC OPERATION TEST: Using the controller, open and close the TriMod electrically by pressing the marked open and close buttons. Confirm that the selected button is in agreement with the position indication on the control panel as well as the recloser position indicator. The recloser position indicator is located on the bottom of the recloser as shown in Figure 9. CAUTION: Do not energize the recloser for service until all control settings have been properly programmed and verified. Refer to the appropriate Joslyn control manual for programming procedures. Failure to comply may result in control and recloser misoperation. Hazardous voltage. Do not rely on the contact position indicator to determine that the line has been deenergized. Always establish a visible disconnect and establish personal grounds when performing deenergized line work. Failure to follow proper safety practices can result in contact with high voltage, which can cause death or severe personal injury. MANUAL TRIP LEVER TEST: With switch closed, pull down the yellow trip lever shown in Figure 10 and verify that the recloser opens. The position indicators, shown through window on the bottom of the recloser (See Figure 9) will show OPEN. The manual trip lever will remain in the down position and both mechanically and electrically block all close operations until it is manually restored to the normal position. Close the TriMod using the control panel by pressing the close button. Position Indicator BOTTOM VIEW Ground lug Figure 9: Individual pole position indicator and counter Figure 10: Manual trip lever 7

TRIMOD TM TM 300R TESTING VACUUM INTERRUPTER TESTS: Every recloser is quality checked and tested before leaving the factory to assure the meeting of all design specifications. In order to verify proper operating condition after shipment, two tests should be performed to evaluate the vacuum contacts. These tests should be performed across each module separately and can be performed, as desired, throughout the life of the recloser. 2. CONTACT RESISTANCE TEST: With the recloser in the closed position, measure the resistance across each module. Resistance values should be less than 200 micro-ohms. If higher resistance values are measured, contact the local Joslyn Hi-Voltage Representative. The Joslyn recloser and high voltage test equipment should be in a test cage or similar protective area to prevent accidental contact with the high voltage parts. All equipment needs to be solidly grounded. Failure to comply can result in death, severe personal injury, and equipment damage. 1. AC HIGH POTENTIAL TEST: Loss of vacuum results in complete breakdown across open vacuum contacts at voltages below 30kV RMS. Only AC high potential testing is meaningful. DC testing cannot be used and could lead to damage to the solid dielectric insulating material. With the recloser in the position, apply 30kV RMS across each individual contact for 15 seconds. To avoid possible generation of X-Rays, do not apply more than 30kV RMS. During the high potential testing, self-extinguishing, momentary breakdowns lasting only a few seconds may occur. These breakdowns are not significant but can result in false indication of vacuum loss, if the test set utilizes a high speed overload relay or breaker. During normal operation with the recloser in service, loss of vacuum or a defective interrupter module may be indicated by excessive AM radio noise with the recloser open or by measuring a difference in surface temperatures (differential of more than 5ºC temperature rise above normal ambient) between poles on the same recloser. A module that has experienced a loss of vacuum will typically have an increased contact resistance. A module which has a higher than normal resistance will operate at a higher temperature than the other modules. Figure 11: Test cable setup details General Test Notes: 1. AC HIGH POTENTIAL TEST Contacts in open position 2. CONTACT RESISTANCE TEST Contacts in closed position Potential DC testing can not be used and could result in damage to the recloser s insulation. 8

TRIMOD TM 300R POLE REPLACEMENT GENERAL POLE DESCRIPTION: The TriMod Vacuum Interrupter is manufactured for a range of distribution voltages with continuous current capabilities up to 800 amperes. The mechanism is operated electrically by energizing a magnetic actuator. The assembly containing the vacuum interrupter is called a pole or module and is shown in Figure 10. Each pole has an interrupter contact sealed in Joslyte. Joslyte is a solidified foam which provides mechanical strength, high dielectric strength, and complete moisture sealing. The pole housing is constructed of a porcelain main bushing and cast aluminum housing. The side terminal may be a permanently fixed porcelain bushing or a removable polymer bushing allowing a cable elbow connection to a 386 bushing assembly. Each pole is identical and is mechanically connected to a ganging bar assembly in a completely sealed operating mechanism housing. An expansion bladder in the mechanism housing is provided to prevent the breathing in of outside contaminants and/or moisture. Based on this design, external power is NOT supplied or required by the recloser. The open-close position indicator is directly coupled to the ganging bar mechanism. The ganging bar is used to group each of the three single poles together to assure three phase synchronization for both open and close operations. An external manual trip assembly, located on the front of the recloser, is connected to the gang bar for manual tripping of the recloser by pulling down on the yellow trip lever. The manual trip lever, in the down position, will maintain the recloser in a lockout position until it is manually restored to the normal position. The trip lever does not move during electrical operation. All electrical control connections to the mechanism are made through a sealed single environment control cable connector located at the end of the recloser. TRIMOD TM 300R POLE REPLACEMENT TRIMOD TM 300R POLE REPLACEMENT POLE REPLACEMENT: All poles are are constructed exactly the same and assembled together to form a three phase recloser. An ordered replacement pole will come completely assembled with a new interrupter as shown in Figure 13. The new replacement pole will require reconnection to the ganging bar and reconnection of the CT connector to the existing wire harness assembly. The following are detailed guidelines on how to replace any of the three poles. The TriMod 300R s rounded lower mounting bracket allows the switch to be tilted back and positioned on the mounting bracket surface. This unique mounting frame prevents having to lift and hold the recloser up during maintenance inspections or pole replacement. Figure 13: Standard pole replacement 1. POSITIONING RECLOSER FOR MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION : The recloser s mounting frame design allows the recloser to be tilted back on the mounting bracket surface. While the recloser is on the ground, place one hand on the top of bracket and other around the front of the center phase porcelain interrupter as shown in Figure 14A. While holding the bracket, slowly pull the recloser backwards as shown in Figure 14B. Once recloser reaches the pivoting point, use both hands to gently guide the recloser back on the mounting bracket surface as shown in Figure 14C. Figure 14A: Pulling recloser backwards Figure 14B: Recloser laying down 2. REMOVAL OF LOWER COVER: The lower cover can be lowered either in the field on the pole structure or on the ground. When working on the recloser on the ground, the unit can be titled back on the mounting bracket surface for easy access to the cover screws. The first step in lowering the cover is to remove the breather plates shown in Figure 14A. Once the plates are removed, loosen the hex head screws that secure the cover. When the screws are removed, lower the cover directly down until the cover reaches the cover hinge point (shown in Figure 15B). The cover will now swing on the hinges to allow full access to the recloser mechanism. When reinstalling the cover, coat both sides of the gasket with Dow Corning #111 or equivalent sealant. The gasket should be replaced if worn or damaged. Reinstall the screws by coating the screw threads with grease (NO-OX-1D A ) and then torque to 65in.-lbs. 10

TRIMOD TM TM 300R POLE REPLACEMENT CAUTION: Do not life or position the recloser using the side bushing. Excess force on these bushings could result in damage of the interrupter assembly. STEP 1: Directly lower cover. STEP 2: Allow cover to swing downward and out of the way on the hinge. Figure 15A: Lower cover holding screws Figure 15B: Lower cover hinge assembly 3. POLE REPLACEMENT: Once the lower cover is removed, each pole can be disconnected from the ganging bar assembly by removing the rue ring cotter and pulling out the connecting pin. The pole is removed by loosening the hex head screws as shown in Figure 16. The new pole is installed by coating both sides of the new gasket with sealant (Dow Corning #111). After positioning the pole into place, reinstall the screws by coating the screw threads with grease (NO-OX-1D A ) and then torque to 65 in.-lbs. Reconnect the pole to the ganging bar assembly by installing the connecting pin and securing it with the rue ring cotter. Reintall the lower cover as described in Item 2. 4-Pole upper hex screws with washers. Torque to 65 in-lbs. Gang bar interface connection. 4-Pole lower pole hex screws with washers. TRIMOD TM 300R SERVICING PROCEDURES AIR BUSHING REPLACEMENT: Inspect and clean the switch bushing interfaces surfaces and the mating air bushing internal surface using a clean, lint free towel and suitable solvent regularly used for insulating parts such as Cable Clean, Triclor 1, 1,2 or Triflor 1,2,2. It is very important to apply the silicone sealant prior to the bushing installation. Using the two packages of silicone sealant supplied with each insulator, apply 1-1/2 pack around the shoulder of the bushing and the rest to the bushing interface. The secondary current transformer leads are terminated using a keyed pin connector. A mating connector is used to connect to the main leads that run through a dedicated wire trough down to the main housing wire harness as shown in Figure 19. Note that when a replacement CT is received from the factory, the CT is already mounted and secured into new cover with the correct polarity. Install the insulator to the bushing by applying Loctite #242 (or equal) to the first 1/2 of the exposed threads of the assembly stud to prevent loosening. Using a wrench on the air bushing conductor end flats, screw the air bushing onto the switch bushing, tightening to approximately 50 footpounds torque. Figure 18: Current transformer cover detail Bushing Extender 386 Bushing Figure 17: Bushing replacement detail THREADED STUD REPLACEMENT: If the threaded stud in the TriMod bushing requires replacement, apply Loctite #242 (or equal) to the first 1/2 of the new stud threads to prevent loosening. Using a screwdriver, thread the stud into the switch bushing until it bottoms out. CURRENT TRANSFORMER REPLACEMENT: Current transformer replacement can be done by removing two bolts of the aluminum cover as shown in Figure 18. The primary conductor leads must be removed and the recloser in the open position. The current transformer can be replaced while the TriMod is mounted as long as all necessary safety clearances and procedures are followed. Figure 19: Current transformer position and connection detail OPERATING NOTES: 1.) The CTs utilized in the TriMod 300R contain a voltage clamping circuit to prevent excessive voltage when disconnecting the recloser cable while the recloser is under load. Though it is recommended to have the recloser in the open position when disconnecting the main cable whenever possible, the CT design does allow the CT to be disconnected while under load without creating unsafe voltage conditions. 2.) CT ratio is specified at the time of ordering and is typically 1000:1. For the TriMod 300R additional CT ratios of 800:1 and 600:1 are available for increased outer current sensitivity. With these lower CT ratios, lower overcurrent pick up values can be programmed in the SEL 351R and 651R controls. 12
