Installation & Integration of New Technologies Lincolnshire Low Carbon Hub 33kV Static Compensator (Statcom) SoLa Bristol In home, Grid connected Energy Storage 3.75MVAr Power Electronic controlled reactive power compensation balanced both steady state and transient voltages, reducing the impact of renewable generation on long distribution networks. 27 installations of 4.8kWh, 2kW in home energy storage 6 installations of 19.2kWh, 3 phase 3.86kW commercial energy storage Installed with Solar PV to reduce customer consumption and balance grid power flows.
Safety Issues and Risks Statcom Requiring WPD to working with new teams & companies unfamiliar with a Distribution Network Operators safety procedures and practices, Installing and owning an unfamiliar assets in an operational substation with different risks, operating and maintenance procedures, and Understanding the consequences in the event of equipment failure. SoLa Bristol Requiring WPD to manage a project with unfamiliar techniques and assets, including 24V DC distribution and battery storage being installed beyond the meter Trialling new systems which have never been combined before, and Calling for WPD to oversee the installation of new systems in customers properties.
Statcom - Analysis & Control Measures Pre - procurement steady state and transient studies Extensive Factory & Site Acceptance Testing Self contained enclosure Electrical bypass installed Full integrated into the business Network Management System Policy dictate access to the Statcom compound is restricted whist enabled.
Bristol - Analysis & Control Measures Comprehensive testing in a factory, laboratory and uninhabited demonstration property prior to roll out. Low Volts Disconnect (LVD) to prevent deep discharge of the battery Battery Voltage Monitor (BVM) providing a real-time reading of the battery voltage Battery Low Volt Warning and Inverter Off to identify to the tenant they should get in touch with BCC as the battery is not being suitably charged from the AC connection. Backup AC / DC power supply to provide a quick and efficient way temporary DC supply for the lighting system should the LVD operate.
Statcom Policies, Training & Awareness All field staff trained on site with the new WPD Statcom Policies, All control engineers trained on how to control the Statcom, Policies updated after 1 years operation, reflecting the operational learning.
SoLa Bristol - Policies, Training & Awareness Comprehensive, user friendly installation, operational and maintenance guides created in conjunction with our project partners, Bespoke SoLa Bristol training & refresh sessions with the installation and maintenance teams, Uninhabited demonstration property system retained, Trial equipment labelled & the Bristol City Council call centre aware of all trial properties.
Integration of 3 FCL Technologies Pre-Saturated Core Resistive Superconducting Active Fault De-Coupler (Power Electronics) The technologies primary purpose is to limit the flow of short circuit current, during a fault, to ensure that all existing equipment on the network is not exposed to currents greater than their withstand capacity
Pre-Saturated Core FCL Key technology differences to existing technology on the network: Has DC and AC connections; and Strong Magnetic Field.
Resistive Superconducting FCL Key technology differences to existing technology on the network: Device operates at 77k (-196.15C) Uses a cryogenic cooling system
Active Fault De-Coupler FCL Key technology differences to existing technology on the network: Power Electronics being used in series Water cooling system
Control Measures for the FCLS As each device is a new installation on to WPD s network additional control measures have been implemented: Each FCL can be bypassed on the network As a minimum an alarm / signal is provided to the Network Management System to determine if the device is safe to connect to the network based on the device s state and condition Protection is in place to identify any internal faults with the devices and disconnect it from the system in that instance
Policies and Training Policies produced to date: Application and Connection of FCLs Engineering Specification of FCLs Operation and Control Inspection and Maintenance Training: A minimum of two operational staff witness the cold commissioning of each device and carry out the energisation
Managing risks from New Technologies Innovation inherently carries higher safety risks WPD policy requires all equipment associated with innovation risks to have an approved policy prior to installation and energisation For this reason Innovation is within Policy section. Safety management is embedded into WPD internal project management processes
