We had a ride on a Saturday morning in July to Strawn, Tx and was told it was a blast. I could not make that ride, job would not allow it. We have cancelled 2 upcoming rides, one to Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, Tx also the ride to Palo Duro Canyon and on to Amarillo, both of these rides will be rescheduled to a later date, when it gets a little cooler. We had a great turn out to our July meeting on July 12th and the Ice Cream Social on the 26th was also a great turn out. If anyone has some ideas for get together during the HOT months, please let me know! I want to end by saying thanks to the staff and volunteers that make this chapter what it is!!!!!!!! Brian Handleson Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge Riding Strategies Five Key Points to Safe Riding Assume you are invisible to other drivers. Don t ever assume another driver knows you re there. Adhere to the attitude that no one else on the road is concerned with your personal safety. Learn to use a riding strategy like SEE (search, evaluate, execute) to manage the roadway and traffic. You can learn SEE in a basic or advanced training course. Look where you want to go. It s called visual directional control. Keep your head and eyes oriented 3-4 seconds ahead of you when cornering. You can get instruction and practice in this technique in a basic or advanced training course. In an emergency, do not stare at the guardrail, the gravel shoulder or the oncoming car chances are you ll hit whatever you re trying to avoid. (The term for this is target fixation.) Counter-steer. Use precise inputs to the handgrips, not body lean, to lean the motorcycle. When you countersteer, you initially turn the handlebars in the opposite direction you think you should. Press forward on the right handgrip, the bike leans right. Press forward on the left handgrip, the bike leans left. (Note: countersteering is not how you turn a motorcycle; it s how you lean a motorcycle.) You can learn to use this technique in a controlled setting by taking a basic or advanced training course. Use both brakes. Your front brake provides 70 percent or more of your stopping power in an emergency. Squeeze, do not grab, the front brake, and keep squeezing, increasing the squeezing pressure until you ve slowed sufficiently or stopped. Untrained riders are often afraid to use the front brake, for fear of flipping over. Trained riders know better. You can learn how to use your front brake for maximum braking in a basic or advanced training course. Minnesota DPS Crater Lake, Page 2 Oregon P Tittitioner
. POSUM KINGDOM DAM Ride J. B. our ride coordinator for Chapter P put a ride together for Possum Kingdom Lake and Dam this past Saturday. We met in Granbury at Starbucks. There were 4 trikes and 1 bike. We sat around and had good fellowship with every one we didn t leave there until 9:15 to make sure we didn t leave anyone behind. Those who went were J. B., Eddie, Malcolm and Lavona, Vern and Kathy, Ray and Barb. Eddie led the ride and stayed under the speed limit so everyone could look and see all of the beautiful scenery. Thanks Eddie for taking your time and thinking of everyone even though you wanted to take the curves a lot faster than what the rest of us wanted. J. B. was the gunner. We stopped in Palo Pinto for coffee, pie or donuts. Then we went on to Possum Kingdom Dam. It was a beautiful ride. The weather cooperated with us and so we had a nice cool pleasant ride. We then left and headed for Strawn for lunch at Mary s. What a wonderful place to eat, more than enough food on one plate for two people. After eating everyone decided it was time to head for home so we all said our good bye s and headed for home. Ray and I got home around 2:30 and it was just starting to get hot. Thank you J. B. for the wonderful day. Barbara
