SERVICE XJ range DATE 03/05 TECHNICAL BULLETIN Water Ingress Around Roof Opening Panel Restricted Drain Tubes Check/Reposition Drain Tubes MODEL VIN XJ501-13 2004-05 MY XJ range G00001-G38526 Issue: Some 2004 MY-on XJ range vehicles may exhibit water ingress from the roof opening panel area, staining of the head lining, and possible instrument pack warning light illumination. The roof opening panel rear drain tubes may be restricted preventing the water from draining away. This condition may lead to water spilling onto the headlining and/or running down the D-pillar area and accumulating in the rear seat pan, leading to potential corrosion to connectors FP002 and FP006. Action: Should a customer express concern, check that the roof opening panel drain tubes are draining correctly, and reposition the drain tubes if required. Follow the Service Instruction outlined below. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Drive the vehicle onto a suitable raised surface so the front wheels are approximately 75 mm (3 in) higher than the rear wheels (Illustration 1). ELEVATE FRONT WHEELS 75 MM ILLUSTRATION 1 NOTE: THE INFORMATION IN TECHNICAL BULLETINS IS INTENDED FOR USE BY TRAINED, PROFESSIONAL TECHNI- CIANS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT TO DO THE JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IT INFORMS THESE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY OCCUR ON SOME VEHICLES, OR PROVIDES INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN PROPER VEHICLE SERVICE. THE PROCEDURES SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMED BY DO-IT- YOURSELFERS. DO NOT ASSUME THAT A CONDITION DESCRIBED AFFECTS YOUR CAR. Use a suitable container/bottle to slowly pour water into the roof opening panel drainage channel (Illustration 2). ROOF OPENING DRAINAGE CHANNEL ILLUSTRATION 2 4. With assistance, look for water flowing onto the floor from the drain tubes located behind the rear wheels (Illustration 3). DRAIN TUBE EXIT ILLUSTRATION 3 5. Repeat step 3 for the opposite side of the roof opening panel. If the water drains from both drain tubes, follow Technical Service Bulletin XJ501-07 to identify the source of the water ingress. If the water does not drain from both drain tubes, carry on from step 6. 6. Disconnect the battery (see Global Technical Reference GTR Workshop Manual, section: 414-01). Position the rear occupant assistance handle to the headlining, ensuring the washers are fitted correctly. Install screws and torque to 1.5Nm (1.11 lbf.ft). 17. Reposition excess drain tube downwards past parcel shelf edge. Caution: When pouring water into the channel, make sure it does not overflow and run over the roof opening panel mechanism into the vehicle cabin. 18. Using a suitable container/bottle slowly pour water into the roof opening panel drainage channel. 19. With assistance, look for water flowing onto the floor from the drain tubes behind the rear wheels. 20.
