The British Air Force approached the detonation of bombs in two ways. By arranging a PISTOL, detonator, exploder and main charge or, By arranging a FUZE, exploder and main charge. The difference is as follows: A fuze contains the initiating explosives within the structure of the fuze, whereas a pistol contains no explosives at all and acts purely as a mechanical device to transmit the impact of hitting the target to a separate detonator. These arrangements are shown schematically below. Fuze Exploder Main Charge Pistol Detonator Exploder Main Charge The Detonators used in British bombs are of two types and these are as follows: ANVIL TYPE This is a type that is used in conjunction with a CARTRIDGE BASE No. 28 or with an ANVIL AND PLUG that screws into the head of the detonator. It follows that the two types are known as the Cartridge Base class and the Anvil-plug class. SENSITIVE TYPE These are the type used with pistols having needle strikers and are not fitted with a percussion cap or anvils. They are made to a standard length and they are thus useable in all standard service bombs.

ANVIL TYPE SENSITIVE TYPE Employed with blunt strikers Employed with needle strikers May be instantaneous May have delay from.025 sec to 11 sec May be instantaneous May have delay from.01 sec to 25 or 30 sec. Found in various lengths. Made in one length only Found in two types CARTRIDGE BASE ANVIL PLUG British 120lb GP HE bomb.

HEAD Being a military item there is a requirement for colour coding to identify each item and its designed delay time, this is shown below for each of the different types. Less than 1 second 1 second 2.5 seconds but less than 11.5 11.5 to 15 seconds Colour coding is by colouring the head with a solid colour. British 100 lb AS bomb.

Instantaneous.025 seconds.12 seconds 1 second 11 seconds Colour coding is by the addition of a 3/8in or two 3/16 in bands around the head.
