City-Line / Borgarlína A high-quality transit system is a key element in the regional plan for Reykjavik Capital Area 2015-2040. 2
Reykjavik Capital Area Facts Greater Reykjavik - The Capital Area of Iceland is made up of seven municipalities, with 215.000 inhabitants or two thirds of the Icelandic population. Year 1985 2012 Land used It is the only urban area in Iceland and therefore plays an important role as a centre of government, education and culture for the whole country. In recent decades, the Capital Area has experienced extensive growth with urban sprawl, increased traffic and longer distances for people to travel. Population Inhabitants/ha AADT main arterial road 135.000 205.000 25.000 75.000 3
1985 2013 +70.000 2040 +70.000
The Capital Area 2040 Key aspect A key aspect of the 2040 vision is that population growth must be dealt with without car traffic increasing at the same rate and without uninhabited greenfield being developed on to the same extent as in previous decades. Growth should be smart and not impair environmental quality. The focus is therefore on improving public transport where the aim is to increase the modal share of public transport. 2012 4% 2040 20% 12% 76% 58% 30% 5
2 paths different results Continue on the same path Change travel pattern
Year 2030 Modal splits
Investment until 2030 Transportation projects Road infrastructure 400 million EUR Roads 150 million EUR Public Transit 250 million EUR
Year 2030 Increase in daily car trips Increase in daily transit passengers
Year 2030 Delays in traffic
Conclusion More traffic Increased delays Bigger eco footprint More travel options Decreased delays Smaller eco footprint The goal that increase in car traffic will not be more than population growth can only be met by changing travel patterns. Therfore investment in infrastructure must provide public transit in a roadway that is dedicated to buses independent from other traffic.
Seperate lanes 5-10 min. frequency Pay fares outside bus What is Cityline? Priority at intersections Reliable service Low steps at door
Bikes in buses Heated main bus stops Real time travel information High class transit system Bus rapid system Entry thru all doors Increased capacity
