Ph.D. Thesis Title Experimental Techniques for the Measurement of Gear Mesh Stiffness Brief Abstract: The mesh stiffness plays a vital role in gear dynamics. Mostly, analytical expressions are being used to calculate the mesh stiffness. In the present research work, five experimental techniques viz. photoelasticity technique, strain gauge technique, laser displacement sensor technique, digital image correlation technique and experimental modal analysis technique have been proposed to measure the mesh stiffness of spur gear pairs. The experimental results of mesh stiffness for healthy and cracked tooth pairs have been compared with the results obtained by analytical and finite element methods. These experimental techniques can be used as an alternative technique to the analytical and FEM or for validating the mesh stiffness results obtained by analytical and FEM.
