What is shown in Picture?. Why we get this bill?. Do you also get this bill?. Find following details from your bill? Total Consumption of electricity: -. Total paid/ payable amount: -. Tryti and Bryti are neighbors. They got electric bill for the month of April; there is huge difference between their electric bills. Tryti : Why your electric bill is lesser them ours? Bryti : The electric bill depends on the consumption of electricity and consumption of electricity at our home is quite lesser than yours. Tryti : How you can say that consumption of electricity is lesser at your home. Bryti :- We can check the consumption of electricity through our electric bills. You can see the consumption of electricity is encirclled with red colour. Total Unit consumed are 447 Units. Tryti :- That I know; but how we can check that mentioned consumed units are appropriate.

Bryti : We can calculate the tentative consumption of electricity. Tryti : How? Bryti : Ok! let s go to Professor Shock for further learning the calculation of consumption of electricity. Friends you too learn and do the assigned activities of workbook. Hello Sir! Good Evening Prof Shock:- Good Evening Tryti Bryti! How are you? Bryti:- We are fine Sir. We came to learn about House Wiring and Calculating consumption of electricity. Prof Shock:- That s great; Now move to the lab of Electro Science House Wiring:- Prof. Shock: - Can you identify the picture? Tryti: - Yes! This is a house. Bryti:- Map or layout of a house. Prof. Shock: - Yes; this is a layout of house and it shows different parts of a house such as Kitchen, Living Room, Study Room etc. Modern houses needs electrification in all parts of a house, the systematic and safe arrangements of wire and electrical devices is known as House Wiring. So friends we will start our learning with preparing layout / ma of our house. Next page is left blank for this purpose only. House Wiring can be defined as Safe and systematic arrangement of electrical wire and fixtures for distribution of electricity in a house. Tryti:- Sir, how we get electricity?

Prof. Shock: - First we will learn some important points of house wiring and then we will learn to calculate the load and consumption of electricity. 1. Service Line: - The electric wire running over electric poles are known as Service Line. The Service Line contains maximum five wires and minimum two wires for carrying electricity. 2. Entry Point: - The Entry Point is considered as a point where the wire from Service Line enters in your house. 3. Energy Meter: - The Energy Meter is first device gets connected with the Service Line wires. The Energy Meter is used to record the consumption of electrical energy. The Energy Meter is used to be fixed at the Entry Point. 4. Distribution Box: - The Distribution Box is a box or panel; from this point the branches of wires comes out for distribution of electricity in different parts of house. 5. Electric Point: - The point which gets connected with electrical load or wall outlet. The systematic arrangement for distribution of electric supply from Entry Point to Electric Point is known as House Wiring. In this unit first we will learn about Map or layout of our house and then about basics of house wiring.

On previous page we had seen a layout / Map of a house. In given space below you draw rough map of your house. Map of My House - Now Indicate the Electrical Entry Point of your house with RED COLOUR. (You can take help of elders for the finding) - Now encircle your room with Green colour sketch Pen. - Draw the electrical points available in your room using symbolic representations and complete the list of electrical devices available in your room.

S.No. Particulars Symbolic Diagram Quantity Use Tube Light LED/CFL/Bulb Point Ceiling Fan Switches 2/3 Plug Point Bryti had prepared a diagram of house wiring of his room. Go through the diagram and complete the task given on next page

Now Draw map of your room and indicate the electrical points available in your room. Make suitable electrical connection of electrical points as shown in Bryti s room. Use RED colour pen for Phase Wire and BLACK for Neutral Wire.

Watts Quantity Hours Calculating Electricity Consumption We get electricity bill every month, each electrical or electronic appliance consumes electricity while it works. The total consumption of electricity in a period of month is charged as electric bill. Calculating the consumption of electrical energy and cost or bill is quite simple. To calculate the consumption of electrical energy, we need to record following three things: 1. The Wattage of appliance, each electrical/ electronic appliance has wattage label or wattage imprint on it. 2. The duration (in hours) of its working in a day (considering the appliance is used all days for the same duration). 3. The rate of electricity charged by the service provider. Activity:- 1. Make a list of electrical/ electronic appliance available in your home 2. Note down the wattage of electrical/ electronic appliances. 3. Record the working of the appliances in a day in hours. Electric Bill Calculation Appliance Watts X Quantity Total Watts X Hours KwH Unit/ Day (Total Wattage X Hours)/ 1000 Total Consumption Monthly Consumption = (Unit per day) X (Days of month)
