TS Series Return-to-Home Gear Reducer
I. OVERVIEW The TS Series Return-to-Home Gear Reducer is a high accuracy, high reliability in-line gear reducer that combines a conventional planetary gear set with an internal mechanism designed to store energy. When a loss of power occurs, the brake is released and the unit s spring force is reapplied, causing the output shaft to move to the home position, and held with the rated torque. Any time the spring is unloading an internal back drive prevention device keeps the input shaft from backdriving, assuring that 100% of the stored energy is applied to the output shaft. A speed limit feature prevents the output shaft from excessive velocities during the unwind, assuring that the gear reducer and the systems fixturing is not damaged due to sudden shock when reaching the end of travel or home position. In normal operation the TS Series acts as a conventional planetary gear reducer and provides amplified torque to the output shaft in order to move a device, tooling, etc. under load. The TS Series is unique in that it also incorporates an energy absorbing device which is able to store mechanical energy. This energy can be used later to drive the output shaft back to a start or home position. The internally mounted spring(s) provides a preset level of torque that remains constant throughout the wind up and release routine, assuring the exact amount of load the work piece will experience at all times. The home position is defined as the mechanical limit of motion in one direction or the other (but not both). Energy is imparted into the Reducer through the motion of the input shaft while attempting to drive the load past its mechanical limit or home position. Being unable to rotate the output shaft further, the Reducer then absorbs the energy being inputted. The energy is stored in an integral constant torque spring device. At a point where the spring is fully wound an electrical output is provided, signaling to the drive/motor to stop turning the input shaft. At this point an internal electrical brake can be activated which holds the loaded spring from unwinding. Once the energy storage cycle is complete, the input shaft can be rotated in the opposite direction causing the output shaft to move off the home position while the spring is held in its wound state. The positioning system is now free to move throughout its range of motion without the input shaft experiencing the load of the spring. By this method the system is able to operate normally with no additional power consumed to overcome the spring torque. 1 All information in this brochure is preliminary.
II. Applications The TS Series Return-to-Home Gear Reducer is ideal for any application where the driven load needs to return to a home or safe position upon loss of power or removal of power from the device s internal brake. Application for return to home operations include: Valve control Damper control Tooling positioning Burner positioning Wind generator blade pitch control Turbine control Gate, door, lock control Brake or clamp control A second frequently encountered application for the TS Series involves the requirement to return to end of travel very quickly in response to a signal (remove power from the brake). Application for return to end of travel operation includes: Automatic assembly Gate and diverter control Shut Down Safe Position Occasionally certain axis in a machine must be returned to a home-safe position at the time the machine or process is powered down. The TS reducer provides the stored energy and mechanism to assure that tooling and devices are properly positioned upon power down or power loss. Valve Fail Safe Operation Frequently valves used where flammable gas and liquids are present need to close rapidly upon command or loss of power. The Riekor TS Series Reducer has the unique function of storing kinetic energy which can be used later to close the valve when required. The energy is stored during the power up process as the positioner attempts to drive the valve beyond its closed position thus winding the internal spring to a preset energy level. The spring is then held and isolated from the drive train once captured. Since the spring load is removed, the positioner needs only to apply enough force or torque to move the valve. With the TS reducer positioners are sized to the valve force or torque required. No additional power is consumed or heat generated from the positioner. Mechanical wear is minimized due to much lower forces being transmitted. 2 All information in this brochure is preliminary.
III. Operations The input shaft of the TS Series drives a sun gear which in turn causes a set of three gears arranged in a planetary configuration to rotate around the sun gear as their teeth engage with a ring gear located around the exterior of this arrangement. A single piece, fully caged planet carrier contains and holds the planet gears and rotates as the input shaft is turned. The planet carrier is attached to the output shaft causing it to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft but with a reduction ratio ranging from 3:1 to 10:1 depending on the relative size of the sun and planet gears. A unique feature of the TS Series Reducer allows the ring gear to rotate. The rotatable ring gear possesses gear teeth on the outside of the ring as well as the inside. The inside teeth mesh with the planets while the outside teeth mesh with a spur gear mounted to a secondary shaft located parallel to the primary input shaft. Parallel Shaft Spur Gear Sun Gear Primary Input Shaft Planet Gears Carrier Upon nearing the end of the spring winding capability an output signal is provided to communicate to the system s drive and motor to stop winding and to signal the brake to activate. Once the brake is activated the input shaft is free to move through its normal operating range (away from the end of travel or home position) without experiencing the torque of the springs. Output Shaft The secondary shaft includes a spool with a constant torque spring loaded onto its surface. The spring will begin winding when the input shaft is turned and the output shaft experiences a torque resistance exceeding the reducer s set torque limit. This torque is experienced by rotating the gear reducer in one direction until the output or tooling makes mechanical contact with a hard stop such as a valve seat or end of travel of a linear actuator or slide. By continuing to rotate the input shaft while the output shaft is held, energy is stored in the spring until the spring is fully wound. Upon removal of power from the brake the torque of the wound spring(s) is reapplied to the output shaft causing the shaft to move to the home position, and held with the rated torque of the Reducer. Any time the spring is unloading an internal back drive prevention device activates to keep the input from backdriving, assuring that 100% of the stored energy is applied to the output shaft. A speed limiting feature prevents the output shaft from excessive velocity during the unwind or return to home sequence. 3 All information in this brochure is preliminary.
V. Sizing The TS Series Reducer is available in six different torque ratings and four different output shaft wind up capabilities. Model Output Torque inlb Nm The output torque and maximum wind up provided by the reducer is determined by the internal gear set and selection of the spring or springs employed in the unit and is driven by the customer s application. The number of output shaft revolutions which can be stored range from one up to twenty turns. Turns capability is established when the device is manufactured. These dimensions can be determined using the dimension data found in section IX (page 6). TS Series Return-to-Home Reducer. VI. Mechanical Coupling The TS Series is supplied with female input connections. The output can be ordered as male or female to allow convenient connection to an apparatus, linear actuator, or other gear reducer. This also reduces the space requirements of the TS Series Reducer and provides high reliability. VII. Mounting The TS Series Return-to-Home Gear Reducer is available in two different mounting configurations. 1. Stand Alone This configuration is designed such that the gear box can be mounted on its own or attached to another mechanism by mounting bolts and shaft couplings. Mounting patterns conform to IEC standards. 2. Actuator Mounting Actuator mounting is intended to replace the back end normally associated with this type of linear actuator. These typically contain gears or a pulley arrangement. In this way the overall footprint and weight of the reducer and actuator package is minimized. 4 All information in this brochure is preliminary.
