Electric Fence Energiser Manual Model Number: Little Demon For more information call: 1300 559 732 info@whitesgroup.com.au whitesgroup.com.au/obriens WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT ENERGISER TO MAINS OPERATED EQUIPMENT

Congratulations on your choice of a Little Demon Strip Grazer! This energiser is equipped with highly effi cient, energy saving Irregular Pulse technology. When used with the recommended Air Alkaline Battery this technology allows an extremly long battery life of approximatley 40 weeks continuous service. The carefully researched Irregular Pulse system uses an unpredictable pulse sequence with some long and some short intervals to create psychological confusion in the animals causing them to fear the fence line. Field trials show this system is more effective than continuous normal pulse intervals. CHARACTERISTICS Power Supply: 6V Voltage ( no load): 10900 Voltage 5000.Ω: 6900 Stored Energy: 0.15j Output Energy: 0.11j Dimensions (mm) L x W x H: 138 x 138 x 230 Weight: 735g The dual puse Little Demon Strip Grazer is designed for energising short lengths of fence (up to 1 km) to retain animals in controlled grazing situations. It will give the save output voltage in regular or irregular setting until the battery voltage drops below 3.0 volts, at which point the battery energy is fully consumed. The battery box is designed as part of the cabinet and is made to hold a 6 volt lantern battery. The recommended battery is a Cegasa 4AS2 air depolarized battery. This battery should give 10 to 12 weeks continuous service on the regular setting and up to 40 weeks on the irregular setting. Using an Energizer 529 alkaline battery should give more than 4 weeks continuous service on the regular setting and up to 15 weeks on the irregular setting. Performance of other batteries or non alkaline batteries is unknown and their use is not recommended. If the battery is flat, or if the energiser is put into storage, always remove the battery as it may leak. Warranty does not cover damage caused by battery corrosion. Operating Instructions for the LITTLE DEMON Strip Grazer Lock Tab Installing the battery Turn the two battery box lock tabs Remove the battery box casing Place the battery in the case, springs up Refit the case using the lock tabs to retain it in place Battery 3

Attaching the energiser to the fence and earth/ground: Tape or Wire To hang the energiser on the fence tape or braided wire: Place the back of the tower against the tape, with the control panel towards you Pull tape over horns The energiser will be connected to the tape by the contact plate on the back of the tower. To connect the earth/ ground: Connect the earth/ground clip to a suitable earth/ground (in normal wet soil conditions a steel electric fence standard is satisfactory) To obtain the best performance, especially if the ground is dry, drive an earth/ground stake (2m / 6ft long) into the ground. Note: If it is not practical to attach the energiser directly to the fence: Attach the wire and clip (supplied with the energiser) to the spade connection on the back of the tower Energised metal contact plates Output lead from auxilliary terminal Hanging Cord Red wire Auxilliary terminal Red Wire Green wire Using the two holes on the energiser case, attach a cord Hang the energiser from a post, batten or standard 4 DO NOT LEAVE THE ENERGISER SITTING OR LAYING ON THE GROUND.

Operating the energiser Lamps When the energiser is secured and is connected to the fence and earth it can IRREGULAR be turned on: Press the on/off button The Regular red light will be flashing. If the stock has had previous electric fence experience, you can select the REGULAR Irregular speed: Check the energiser is running Press the Regular / Irregular Regular / Irregular On / Off (R/I) button The fence will switch to Irregular pulse intervals and the Irregular red light will be flashing. In Regular setting the battery life is shorter. One day should be sufficient to train stock if they have not had previous electric fence experience. The energiser can then be switched to Irregular speed. Use your own judgment to select the appropriate setting. Other Fencing Equipment To obtain reliable stock control it is essential that proper electric fencing methods are used at all times. This includes the use of good insulators, good high quality conductive tapes or braided wire (in good condition) and earthing / grounding as required for the fence length and ground conditions. Break fencing Break feeding is a very efficient means of pasture control / conservation. your energiser is the foundation for controlling your stock. The other essential components to make this a simple, easily setup and convenient method are: Fence Reel A geared reeel will make shifting the break fence regularly fast and easy. We recomment an O Briens 3:1 Geared Reel. Tape /Wire Choose a good conductive tape/wire to wind on your reel. Unless the breaks are always going to be very short, choose a tape/wire with high conductivity. Tapes are more visible in the field than polywire / braided wire and are light weight to make carrying a wound reel easy. However in very windy locations polywire/ braided wire is best. Standards If a single tape / wie is to be used, the height should be about the height of the animal s nose when standing. The most common and effective standard is the the steel pigtail standard for cattle. With practice you can simply hook up the tape/ wire as it lies on the gound then trad in the standard. Plastic standards are available with many different heights of tape attachment. These are an advantage with smaller animals as a height suitable for the animal, or perhaps multiple tapes/wires, can be used. Insulated hook O Briens range includes insulated hooks to attach the tape/wire to the anchor fence. 6

Setting up a break: Choose a point on the anchor fence and attach the hook Release the locking pawl on the reel Carry the reel (using the reel handle) across the fi eld to the other side, allowing the tape/wire to run out Hook the reel to the other anchor fence Engage the pawl Tension the tape/wire Place standards at suitable intervals to support the tape/wire without sagging and with regard to the terrain under the line. At approximately the center of the break place a second standard about 150mm / 6 inches from a previously placed standard, (Placing the energiser in the centre of the break gives the shortest distance to the ends to give the best shock. Placing it between two standards stops the tape sagging and prevents shake off ) Reel Energiser hung between two standards at mid-width of fi eld Attach the energiser to the tape/wire between these two standards Connect the earth Turn the energiser on Earth/ Ground Clip (Green) When rewinding the reel always remove the tape/wire from the standards or it will cut through the insulators as it is rewound. An electric fence is only as good as the insulation on the fence. Never used cracked or substandard insulators and keep grass clear of the tape. 7

8 Safety Regulations WARNING: Read all instructions This appliance is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons unless they are adequately supervised by a responsible person to ensure that they can use the appliance safely. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. Electric animal fences and their ancillary equipment shall be installed, operated and maintained in a manner that minimizes danger to persons, animals or their surroundings. Electric animal fence constructions that are likely to lead to the entanglement of animals or persons shall be avoided. An electric animal fence shall not be supplied from two separate energisers or from independent fence circuits of the same energiser. For any two separate electric animal fences, each supplied from a separate energiser independently timed, the distance between the wires of the two electric animal fences shall be at least 2m. If this gap is closed, this shall be effected by means of electrically non-conductive material or an isolated metal barrier. Barbed wire or razor wire shall not be electrifi ed by an energiser. A non-electric fence incorporating barbed wire or razor wire may be used to support one or more off-set electrified wires of an electric animal fence. The supporting devices for the electrified wires shall be constructed so as to ensure that these wires are positioned at a minimum distance of 150mm from the vertical plane of the non-electrifi ed wires. The barbed wire and razor wire shall be earthed/ grounded at regular intervals. Follow the recommendations in this instruction sheet regarding earthing/ grounding. A distance of at least 10m shall be maintained between the energiser earth/ ground electrode and any other earthing/ grounding system connected parts such as the power supply system protective earth or the telecommunication system earth. Connecting leads that are run inside buildings shall be effectively insulted from the earthed/ grounded structural parts of the building. This may be achieved using insulated high voltage cable. Connecting leads that are run underground shall be run in a conduit of insulating material or else insulated high voltage cable shall be used. Care must be taken to avoid damage to the connecting leads due to the effects of animal hooves or tractor wheels sinking into the ground. Connecting leads shall not be insulated in the same conduit as the mains supply wiring, communication cables or data cables. Connecting leads and electric animal fence wires shall not cross above overhead power or communication lines. Crossings with overhead power lines should be avoided wherever possible. If such a crossing cannot be avoided it must be made underneath the power line and as nearly as possible at right angles to it.

If connecting leads and electric animal fence wires are installed near an overhead power line, the clearances shall not be less than those shown in Table 1 following. Table 1 - Minimum Clearances From Power Lines for Electric Animal Fences Power Line Voltage (V) Clearance (m) Less than 1,000 3 Between 1,000 and 33,000 4 More than 33,000 8 If connecting leads and electric animal fence wires are installed near an overhead power line, their height above ground shall not exceed 3m. This height applies to either side of the orthogonal projection of the outermost conductors of the power line on the ground surface, for a distance of: * 2m for power lines operating at a nominal voltage not exceeding 1000V (1 kv); * 15m for power lines operating at a nominal voltage exceeding 1000V. Electric animal fences intended for deterring birds, household per containment or training animals such as cows need only be supplied from low output energisers to obtain satisfactory and safe performance. In electric animal fences intended for deterring birds from roosting on buildings, no electric fence wire shall be connected to the energiser earth electrode. A warning sign shall be fitted to every point where persons may gain ready access to the conductors. Where an electric animal fence crosses a public pathway, a non-electrifi ed gate shall be incorporated in the electric animal fence at that point or a crossing by means of stiles shall be provided. At any such crossing, the adjacent electrifi ed wires shall carry warning signs. Any part of an electric animal fence that is installed along a public road or pathway shall be identified at frequent intervals by warning signs securely fastened to the fence posts or firmly clamped to the fence wires. The size of the warning sign shall be at least 100mm x 200mm. The background colour of both sides of the warning sign shall be yellow. The inscription on the sign shall be black and shall be either: the substance of CAUTION: Electric Animal Fence, or the symbol shown. The inscription shall be indelible, inscribed on both sides of the warning sign and have a height of at least 25mm. Ensure all mains-operated, ancillary equipment connected to the electric animal fence circuit provides a degree of isolation between the fence circuit and the supply mains equivalent to that provided by the energiser. Protection from the weather shall be provided for the ancillary equipment unless the equipment is certified by the manufacturer as being suitable for use outdoors, and is of a type with a minimum degree of protection IPX4. 9
