Activity Title: W93 Down Local Passenger Service Wednesday only Day / Time: Wednesday only, 11 55am Season & Weather: Summer & Clear Difficulty: Medium Time to complete: 1.5 hours Description: Activity W93 was a local passenger service that is tabled to run on Wednesday only, commenced at Sydney (0825) and terminated at Eskbank (1320). When originally opened, all trains were required to reverse up and down the Middle Road. In later years this was considered too dangerous and engine run-around facilities were added to the top and bottom points. After these facilities were added it was normal practice to run the engine around all passenger trains at the top and bottom points. Typically 5 minutes was allowed for this operation. Goods trains still tended to reverse up and down the Middle Road. This activity will commence at Mt Victoria, and conclude at Eskbank Station. You will need to shunt your train at Mt Victoria, and on the Zig Zag. You will need to cross a number of services running in the opposite direction. Briefing: The activity commences shortly after the arrival of W93 at Mt Victoria (11 55). Your timetable is as follows: Mt Victoria 1155 / 1215 Hartley Vale 1223 Bell 1230 / 1236 Clarence 1247 / 12 48 Edgecombe 1253 Top points 1257 / 1302 Bottom points 1307 / 1312 Eskbank 1320 During your journey you will need to do some special shunting activities as follows:
i) Mt Victoria - The first two carriages of the train (FA, FX) need to be shunted off the train and left in the carriage siding. (Refer to detailed instructions in Appendix) ii) Bell You are tabled to cross W28 at Bell. You will arrive first, and be routed to the platform. Once the stop has been completed, you will then need to reverse your train, and proceed into the loop to allow W28 to access the platform Once W28 is at the platform, you will be given clearance to proceed. iii) Zig Zag As a safety feature you cannot propel your train down the Zig Zag, and therefore you will need to run around your train at both the top and bottom of the Zig Zag to ensure that your locomotive is leading the train. When undertaking shunting activities that involves coupling or uncoupling from your train, remember the following points: Uncoupling / Coupling Use the F9 ( Train Operations ) menu to uncouple the train at the point required. Note that you will need to close the rear angle cock in the Car Operation Menu of the last car in the shortened train to ensure that the brakes will release. In the Brake Info HUD the angled cock status is indicated by a + if open, and a - if closed. You will not be able to release the brakes until you have closed the brake pipe at the point where the train was uncoupled. Coupling will require you to reverse onto your train at slow speed, around 4 mph. Once the Train Operations menu has indicated that the cars have coupled to the train, you will need to open the brake cocks at the point where you coupled to the train and ensure that the brake pipe is continuous all the way through the train. To change the status use the Car Operation Menu, by clicking on the number of the car that you wish to change. If all else fails you can use the Shft / keys to reinitialise the brake system. Passing signals during shunting To pass signals whilst shunting you will need to switch to the Manual control mode by pressing Ctrl M. Remember to switch back to automatic mode by pressing the same keys once you are ready to continue the activity. You will need to be back at your starting position when you changed the control mode. Switching points To switch points you will need to toggle between automatic and manual modes (see above). To switch the point in front of the train, press G key, and to switch point behind the train press the Shft G keys.
