2017-18 Alaska State Fair Demolition Derby Rules (LARGE CARS) If car does not pass inspection or driver is unwilling to change car to pass inspection, car will not run in derby - absolutely no refunds!! 1. All rules will be followed, or you will not run!! No PROFANITY or bad taste shall be allowed on the car or paintjob. It will be painted over if found to be offensive. Children are our biggest fans! 2. Drivers must be 15 years of age or older and have a valid driver s license or permit. Ages under 18 must have a signed permission slip. 3. Driver must wear seat belt, helmet, shirt, and eye protection at all times when operating vehicle. It is recommended that have a fire extinguisher mounted inside the car, within reach of the driver. 4. ALL drivers and crewmembers must attend the drivers meeting. 5. DO NOT hit the driver s door! Sometimes this happens, but if it looks intentional or carelessness, you will be disqualified. Don t use your door as a shield, it may cause you to get disqualified. Drivers door will be painted red; If the primary color of the car is red the drivers door will be painted black. 6. Numbers must be displayed on both sides of the car. 7. No hot rodding in the pits, keep it at an idle. 8. Any fire or roll over may cause a disqualification. Once the fire is extinguished or the vehicle is rolled back over, it will be determined at that point if you can continue. If you are allowed to continue and have a second fire or roll over, you are out for the heat. 9. NO sandbagging or holding!!! You will be disqualified!!! 10. You are given 2 minutes for aggressive hits, 2 minute for restarts and 2 minute if you are hung up. After 2 minutes without a hit, you will be timed out. 11. No alcohol in the pits, if anyone is intoxicated or caught with alcohol, they will be disqualified, this includes their pit crew. No one in the pits may consume alcohol during any portion before or during the event. 12. Cars may be subject to re-inspection before any prize money is handed out. 13. Any controversies will be taken up at the drivers meeting. No fighting!!! 14. Any questions building the car, please give us a call! If it doesn t say you can do it, don t do it. Call 1st!! 15. PREPARATION: 1. All glass, plastic, and carpet must be removed. Includes trim, mirrors, tail and head lights. Nothing may remain in the bottom of the doors or trunks. 2. All rear and front plastic bumper covers must be completely removed. Includes fiberglass, header panel, ¼ panel extensions, grill, chrome moldings, antennas, windshield wipers, sun visors, and other dangerous loose objects. 3. No added weight to the car except the weld and strap/rebar on seams. Any added metal that is not rebar; all thread; 1/8 x1 strapping; or 3/16 plates on the bumpers will be highly scrutinized by the judges. No packing the frames, trunks, doors (except driver s door), or under floor. If car floor is rusted, you may weld in sheet metal no thicker than 16ga (1/16) for supporting seats, battery, fuel tank, etc. 4. Front seats must be securely mounted to the floor however if you are using bolts to secure the seat, they may not go through the frame. Must have some form of an operable seat belt. All cars should have inner padding on driver's door. 5. All flammable materials inside the car must be removed except necessary safety padding and seat. 6. A pipe or bar behind the seat is strongly recommended. A 6 by 6 plate at the end of the pipe may be welded to the interior of the car behind the seat and the bar. You may connect the bar behind the seat with a bar on both the drivers and passenger side to make a 4 point box (X) style cage. No uprights may be attached from the cross pipe to the frame. A roll bar may be installed which can run inside the car and may extend the upright out the window and over the roof. A dash bar may also be installed. 7. No fully enclosed cages are allowed. i.e. no metal, bar, pipe, or steel is allowed to be placed inside or outside of the passenger side running the length of the car. Connecting of the seat bar and dash bar on the passenger side is prohibited. FUEL PUMPS AND BATTERIES: 1. Maximum of 2 (two) 12-volt batteries may be used. 2. Electric Fuel Pumps are allowed. Must have cutoff switch near steering wheel and all fuel lines should have double clamps. 3. Batteries should be located on passenger side floor board and secured and cannot be left in stock position under hood. Batteries must be covered in some manner to protect the driver from breakage of battery. TIRES: 1. Tires no bigger than rim size of 16 inch (any ply) may be used. No split rims. No Foam filled or Doubled tires. Valve seam protectors allowed but do not screw tire to the rim. No homemade wheels, however wheels may be cut for larger hub size. 2. Wheel weights must be removed. 2

3. No studded tires. BRAKES: 1- All cars must exhibit the ability to stop. If a car loses its braking ability it may be subject to disqualification. ENGINES, AIR CLEANERS, TRANSMISSIONS, SUSPENSION, AND REAR ENDS: 1. Gas engines only, no diesels. 2. Any power train combination may be used in any car. You may cut a hole in the firewall to accommodate the engine within reason. 3. No holes will be allowed in the front floor of the car except to accommodate the transmission shifter, fuel lines, transmission lines and wiring. Patching holes is for safety not reinforcement; if patching rust holes you may only weld sheet metal and not exceed 3 past where rust stops. 4. Motor mounts may be welded or chained; transmission and motors may be chained. 5. You must have an air cleaner over the carburetor at all times during the event. 6. There must be at least 12 inch opening cut in hood in case of a fire. 7. Springs must be of passenger car origin. No adding leaf springs or use of truck leaf springs or truck 6 or 8 bolt axles. Leaf Springs may be re-clamped up to 6 clamps per side. 8. Torsion bars can be turned up, shims taken out of A arms or adjusted. 9. Rear ends may be chained to frame 10. A-arms can be welded to eliminate suspension travel. A single piece of up to 1 all thread can be welded in place used to eliminate suspension travel. (see BUMPERS for max height) DOORS, TRUNKS AND WINDOWS: 1. The doors, windows and trunk may be welded solid. Seams may be welded with a maximum of 1 wide 1/8 strap or 3/8 rebar. If your trunk lid or fender seams are within 1 inch of either bumpers, strap can be welded to join the two. Straps or rebar can be ran down trunk seam and welded to bumper also. 2. If you do not weld your doors you must chain or wire at least twice per seam. You may not bolt your doors shut. Chains or wire may not go thru or around the frame. 3. Drivers door may have window netting for driver s protection. No other window opening is allowed to have any form of window netting. Windshield should have bars welded in front of driver to prevent hood from hitting driver if it should come loose. 4. Hood should be held on either by using stock hinges and wire; 2 angle iron (2 sets per side, 6 inches max in length each) with bolt through angle iron; or all thread connected to the frame. Hood must be held in at least 4 total locations. 5. Hood must be off or open during inspection. 3

BODY: 1. Large cars-any make sedan, station wagon, or hearse, can be run. No 4x4 s, El Caminos, Rancheros, or Imperials pre 1974, etc. If you do have a 4 wheel drive car, disable either the front or rear drive. 2. All bodies must be mounted on stock frames. 3. The fender wells may be cut and rewelded to obtain clearance. When rewelding, a piece of 1 strap or rebar may be used to attach cut metal together. 4. Body bolts may be replaced, and body bushings removed. Support bolts may have larger bolts installed. 5. Up to 1 all thread is allowed thru the frame and hood/trunk. BUMPERS: 1. Bumpers are interchangeable. Any automotive (Not truck) bumper and bumper brackets may be used on any car. No angle iron, pipe, square tubing, channel iron or gusseting is allowed. 2. You may weld the bumper seams, shocks and the brackets to the frame. If you choose not to use brackets, you may weld bumpers directly to the frame using only a 4x6 square plate not to exceed 3/16 thick. No angle iron, pipe, square tubing, channel iron or gusseting is allowed to reinforce bumper or fabricate bumper brackets. 3. Bumpers may be cut so they do not smash into the tires during the event: Bumpers may be flipped and also welded to body where they are within 1 inch of the body. 4. Compression bumper shocks may be drained, slid back into the shock and welded fully. 5. Maximum bumper height is 20 from the ground to the bottom of the bumper. Pre-ran cars exceeding this height will be considered on a case by case basis. Eligibility will be determined by the judges. FRAME: 1. Factory seams on the frame can be rewelded to the front A arms, rear to center of hump near tires only. Sub frames can be welded together and only use 3/8-1/2 rebar or 1/8 x 1 strapping flat stock filler metal. 2. You may cut or notch frames but may not weld the cut. 3. Pre-bending and tucking of trunk lids is allowed, however maximum bumper heights must not be exceeded. 4. You may replace stock bolts and washers on outside of body and frame 5. No body bolt may extend below frame more than 2 inches, all bolts and nuts must be inside of frame. 4

RADIATORS & RADIATOR SUPPORTS: 1. Radiators must stay in the stock position; 1/8 x 1 straps may be used to hold in place. 2. Electric fans, clutch fans or no fans may be utilized. 3. No top or bottom radiator support made of angle iron, pipe, square tubing, or channel iron support is allowed to be added. Only stock supports or fabricated supports from sheet metal are allowed. TRANSMISSION COOLERS: 1. Transmission coolers will be allowed and can be securely located inside of the car. 2. Rubber lines must be double clamped. Lines are recommended to be high temp/pressure type. 3. Transmission cooler must be enclosed. GAS TANKS: 1. Original gas tanks must be removed from the car or at least a 6 inch hole cut in bottom of tank and tank emptied prior to arrival at the derby. 2. You must have gas tank securely mounted inside the car and covered. 3. A maximum size of 6.5 gallons can be used: A marine type tank, fuel cell or gas tank should be used. (a portable marine outboard tank is recommended) 5. Factory Fuel tanks may be used inside to incorporate the use of the stock electric fuel pump. Please secure fuel tank inside car and only fill with approximately 6 gallons-do NOT FILL! 6. Gas tank protectors will be allowed for safety only. Do not try to strengthen car with them. It cannot exceed 24 wide, it cannot attach to anything other than your seat bar. It must be a minimum of 3 away from all sheet metal. 5
