General Specifications Bid # 2372 Fire Hydrants Water Resource Department The contract period for these items is for 1 full year beginning the effective date of the awarded contract, December 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. The City of Westfield reserves the right to select the firm that best meets the requirements of the City. The City of Westfield reserves the right to reject any or all bids wholly or in part; to waive technicalities and informalities; to amend and/or cancel bid prior to the time of opening; to make awards in a manner deemed best to the City; to correct any award erroneously made as a result of a clerical error on the part of the City. Sealed bids are requested on the basis of unit prices for each item listed in the bid. Prices shall be for the hydrants F.O.B. to the City of Westfield, Water Resource Department, 28 Sackett Street, Westfield, MA. Prices shall be firm unless clearly marked on the bid form. The naming of a specific manufacturers catalog number, together with the construction details, is used for the purpose of defining the type and quality of material required. Other manufacturers products of approved equal quality will be acceptable. Bidders bidding on items other than those specified are requested to submit a complete technical description of items on which they are bidding. Any changes in specifications on this bid shall be indicated by the vendor and inserted in RED. The City will be the determining factor as to if the product substituted is equal to what is specified in this bid. PART 1 GENERAL WORK INCLUDED A. Furnishing fire hydrants and appurtenances REFERENCE STANDARDS A. AWWA-C502-latest edition standard for dry barrel fire hydrants B. Hydrants must be UL listed and FM approved. QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Hydrants furnished under these specifications shall be the product of a manufacturer with at least ten (10) years experience in hydrant manufacturing for the American Market. B. Prequalified manufacturers are Mueller, Kennedy Valve and American/Darling. C. All fire hydrants shall be of a type equal to Mueller Centurion 250, Kennedy K81A Guardian or American/Darling B84B. PRODUCT, DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE A. Delivery Description: 1. All materials shall be handled in a manner to prevent damage. Hydrants shall be drained and completely closed prior to shipment. 2. Any flawed or damaged products shall be rejected and immediately removed from the site and replaced with operable products. SUBMITTALS A. CONTRACTOR shall provide shop drawings, operating and maintenance manual, product data and published guarantee information and warranties. These shall be furnished at time of contract award. B. A manufacturer s affidavit of compliance shall be provided stating that the materials furnished comply with all applicable requirements of this specification and meet the requirements of AWWA C502. This shall be furnished at time of contract award. PART 2 PRODUCT A. Hydrant (approximately 30 required) Compression-Dry Barrel: The design shall be such that all internal operating parts can be removed through the barrel without excavating. Fire hydrants shall be designed for a minimum working pressure of 250 psi. General Design The nominal diameter of the main valve opening shall be 5-1/4. The bury length shall be 5, 5-1/2, 6, 6-1/2 and 7. The hydrant shall have two 2-1/2 hose nozzles with NST thread and one 4-1/2 pumper nozzle with N.S.T thread. Outlet nozzle caps shall be provided for all outlets. The caps shall be fastened to the hydrant barrel with a cable or chain which will permit free rotation of the caps.
The inlet shall be suitable for a 6 mechanical joint connection to ductile iron pipe. Each hydrant shall be supplied with one individually packaged Megalug mechanical joint kit as manufactured by EBBA Iron Inc., Eastland, TX. Each hydrant shall have removable brass drain plugs The operating nut shall be pentagon, 1 ½. The hydrant shall be opened by turning the operating nut COUNTERCLOCKWISE (LEFT). The hydrant top section shall be painted red; two coats. Each hydrant shall be operated to insure free and perfect functioning of all of the parts. Assembled hydrants shall be subject to a hydrostatic pressure test of 500 psi. Tool Kit Tool Kit: One (1) complete tool kit including hydrant wrench, cap screw wrench, seat wrench, and bottom plate wrench and brass sleeve is required with the first hydrant shipment.
