Volvo owners club of SA January February 2016 Est 1981 Committed to the preservation and restoration of out of production vehicles in their original form

From the chairman 2016.cannot be, it is just too quick! Hope you all had a wonderful festive season and for those that were fortunate to have a break I hope you rested well. Those not as fortunate hoop jy kry jou beurt binnekort. Those still out there on holiday I think it is time to get your..back at home! Ry asseblief veilig. Well not much to report on over the last two months as nothing much happened since the Saamtrek, other than me having to have my 122S engine overhauled! En terwyl ek besig was Hersel se arm gedraai om my te help (of ek dink ek het hom gehelp) om my enjin kompartement effe op ted ollie en weer netjies te maak. We removed the engine and I entrusted it to Howard who organised the necessary work, we ran around and got the spares I did not have and once the machining and head was done, Howard did the assembly. In die tyd was ek elke Saterdag by Hersel waar ons die enjin ruim gestrip het, afgeskuur het, primer gespuit en toe n nuwe lag verf. As soon as the paint was dry and the clear coat spread over it the reassembly started with new hydraulics, cleaned steering box, alternator and with one weekend left Howard advised me the engine is done and on Saturday 5 December we put it in.and started it. Wow what a sound and then.damn it is running extremely hot!! Check alles thermostat.radiator.maar uh uh.innie rooi en ons voel gesnoeker.tot en met ons die onderste radiator pyp verwyder.the two ports above the waterpipe was taped closed when the engine was painted! Removed that and voila all looked much better on the temp front. A few small hiccups here and there and sorted out and all things equal I will be doing the George run in my 122 with it s new engine.a few tweaks yeah but hey come to the shows and come and have a look and I will tell you all.

condolences It is with sadness that we learnt that two of our long standing members passed away, Willie Deysel in October 2015 and Bill Greig passed away on 3 December 2015. Our condolences to the families, friends and loved ones on the sad loss. Bill & Daphne Greig Volvo track day warren flynn On a Friday evening I, and I imagine most of the current VCSA members, received a mail from Deon asking whom would like to attend a Volvo track day at Zwartkops Raceway. The timing was perfect, I had finally finished getting the new carpets and reconditioned seats back in and so I was looking for an event or excuse to take Stella out to be driven and enjoyed. I decided to play it really cool and only replied within five minutes of reading the mail. I was very excited initially to have Deon and some members of the marketing team of Volvo SA agree to having Stella attend, with myself of course! To be completely honest the excitement simmered into a nervousness as now I was starting to see the imperfections in Stella and I now needed to travel for work so would have no time to work on her. My wife attested that Stella is perfect and I should just enjoy her and the day when it comes, I had no other option but to do that now. I am glad I did as I would have been stressed out on the days leading up to the track day. Instead, I decided to really make a day of it and enjoy myself. We left really early from the Greenstone Hill Area and decided to take the long route up the old motor way past the airport and cutting across when we got near Centurion. So having recently replaced the shocks with Gabriel shocks the drive and handling was amazing, I could really enjoy the cruise up with a big smile on my face which given the hoots and waves it must have made a few other people smile too. Upon arriving at the raceway we were directed to park adjacent to the new XC90, which can simply be described as the car which no-one makes anymore. Every aspect of the car was designed and made with such care to detail and opulence. Learning that the key stylings in the new ranges will be along the inside and out styling of the XC90, means they have a buyer in us! So when most people arrived the festivities kicked off, everyone was put into sections and we would rotate into the different stations. The first station for us was the 4X4 track, we were driven around the track in a XC60. I was blown away at the capabilities of the SUV; it would put the most hardened 4x4 er through its paces. Testing the descent control, forward and reverse was slightly unnerving but worth the thrill. Our second station was probably the most hair raising of the day, it s OK as I don t have much hair left anyways. It was the stability control demonstration in a V60 T6, which was performed at top speed with the safety feature on and off. Besides being thrown around a track with massive smiles on our faces, we were blown away at how the car handled when under this stress. The third station had us being shown the IntelliSafe feature which helps avoid collisions. It was amazing given the car automatically brakes when you are inevitably going to drive into another car or object. That demonstration had to be the most unnerving and definitely one I needed in the past. At the fourth station were shown the self-guided parking feature, I have experienced this in other cars before but just how Volvo has demonstrated the use of the different information screens was amazing. Also needed given I would never be able to park a car in the spaces the two cars parked in. A fun experience was at the penultimate station, the Castrol EDGE station which used the Virtual Reality Technology Oculus Rift to demonstrate the Bloodhound SSC and how the run will be experienced with in the cockpit next year at Hakskeen Pan.

Lastly we were shown some product features and future product (not all unfortunately as they are secret), so if some of those Concept cars come to life or at least their design cues then I will be a very happy man. If you have a chance go to the Volvo car s website and look at the concept cars and you will see what I mean, personally the wagon would be amazing I may be a little biased for Volvo wagons. We were given an amazing lunch and allowed to look and probe the cars closer. After eating we were allowed to test drive the Volvo s that they had there for the day and where used as demonstration vehicles. I will admit that the S60 T6 is an amazing car and at over 300hp it made the person in the car with me slightly unnerved, but he was put at ease knowing that I briefly raced motocross before having two career ending accidents at which point I didn t mention the car accidents I have been in as he was sweating profusely. We did push the cars and errors in handling by the drivers were managed amazingly well as any other car would have had us of the track. So once the adrenaline had subsided and were given packed hampers we headed home. Now driving home in Stella after driving these magnificent cars we were still blown away how Volvo have kept to a comfortable and exceedingly safe car. The overall day was amazing and exceeded our expectations. The event was world class and coordinated perfectly! We were ecstatic to be part of the new direction of Volvo as well as being able to see the simply awe inducing XC90. www.volvoclub.co.za Find and join us on Facebook volvo owners club of SA

WESTERN CAPE CLUB BREAKFAST RUN 22 NOVEMBER 2016: Wouter wentzel What a turnout!!!!!! This morning saw 13 enthusiasts and their Volvos gather at the Engen Winelands One Stop on the N1 to Paarl at around 08h30 and exceed all our expectations when it comes to numbers. Thanks guys for making this such a huge success. The trip started on the N1 to Paarl and take a turn along the back roads to Franschoek, over Helshoogte and into the Interchange at Somerset Mall to a place we call Helgas for a hearty breakfast and great company. Many new faces joined the group today and we welcome them and trust they will be joining us again in the very near future. Over a million rands worth of exclusive Volvo tools to be available in the workshop at all times these are stored in a strong room due to the value. No wonder the Swedish are known for perfection!! Therefor the perfection in the manufacture of their vehicles as well. Many new friends were made this morning and contact details shared amongst them all let s make this a regular occurrence in the Western Cape going forward into 2016. TECHTIP - Care of your 140 series lower sill: Howard The line-up today included: 2 x 122 s 1 x 144 1 x 850 T5 1 x V70 R 2 x S60 T5 2 x S60 R 2 x C30 R-design 1 x S60 T6 Polstar 1 x XC90 V8 A special word of welcome to Rob and FC of Rola Volvo Helderberg who not only joined us for breakfast, but also took us to their exquisite new showroom. We were privileged to get a sneak preview of one of the few 2015 S60 Polestars that will grace our roads shortly. What a beaut!! Rob pointed out the 5 specific requirements he is audited on regularly as a Volvo dealership: Specific colour schemes required in the showrooms Waiting areas to be within a limited distance of the workshop Blue Air (Swedish style) to be circulated in the waiting area Specific eats required for all visitors in the waiting area Before your beloved 140 series catches you out with the dreaded cancer in the lower body sills running beneath the door(s), let s understand the design: Any water entering the cabin inlet grill behind the bonnet hinge line travels to the lower corners of the windshield and then down ahead of the forward door hinges. This is a box section of the forward door frame which opens directly to the lower sill box section as indicated by the red arrows. The lower plenum has 4 drain points. One near the front jack point and one near the rear jack point. These have to be kept clear. Use a small wooden dowel to keep the crud from building up. (not a piece of steel wire don t want to damage the paint to bare metal). Now, parking your 140 series under trees sheading their leaves can really be the worst thing ever if not addressed. The leaves have one way to go down with the airflow or the water and block the drain holes. They retain water..an ideal recipe for corrosion.. moisture and air. There is a way to keep this area clean. From the inside side carpeted area there are a couple of large plastic plugs in the vertical section of this plenum, open up, clean up and protect the area. Doing this will only help your 140 series outlive you!!!

Volvo, one Great Car: phil mcpherson When I was a kid, my Father brought home a 122 Station Wagon which he had been given on demo for Shell. On that weekend we went to visit my Uncle and Aunt in Brits, as kids we had a great time in the back of the wagon. This was the start of my love of this wonderful Marque. In 1969 I bought my first new 122S-B20, it was a Demo model with 500 miles on the clock. R2825 for 36months was the deal. It was pale grey in color with red interior, which I did not really like, so I looked around and found a smashed car in Johannesburg. This car had a black interior, which matched my car, so I bought the entire interior for R60.00. Now I was satisfied completely with my purchase. I had 7 years of wonderful travelling in the car, never at any time feeling unsafe or having to pay large bills for repairs. It never travelled on a sand road, as this was my pride and joy. 386500 miles. When I got married, I bought a PV544 for my wife and we started having children, it was decided that we needed 4 doors and a bigger boot, so the 122 had to go. Sold, to a friend, who after a short ownership wrote the car off. No serious injury himself, but a dagger to my heart on hearing the news. A 1976, 164e was bought for the Safety aspect, for my precious cargo. The boot was huge in comparison and it was very luxurious. This car was very reliable and took us everywhere in style. Volvo left S.A. and I kept on with my love for these wonderful cars, never fearing not being able to get spares as Tom Campher was always willing to assist The 164e which had 395000kms on the clock, was then sold to my brother in law in PE. (Nee hy borsel sy tande, of die haai van die baai) He transported his family in safety for many years after. A few years later we wanted a station wagon and I bought a white 244DL which had been brought in by embassy staff. It had American Spec bumpers and Automatic gearbox. 108000kms. This made perfect sense to me as it had all the space in the world inside, but was not the most power full. The Auto gearbox eventually gave trouble at 355000 kms and was replaced with a Cressida 5 speed manual box, by the Late Apie Kruger. This is not the way I would have done it, could I have found a 5 speed Volvo Box, but I must admit the mod was very successful as it suited the power to weight of the 244. My heart longed for another 164e and I bought a low miler which the previous owner had looked after. The Speedo reading was 123000kms and this car did 500000+kms. I also had good fortune to find an Imported 144e with American Spec. bumpers, leather seats etc. A great car, but did not keep it for long. The 244DL made way for a 245 wagon bought from people who had come to settle in S.A. A beautiful wagon, with all the bells and whistles, leather, fuel injection and a 2.3litre engine with manual box. This had 60000kms on it, an improvement on what we had. We had lots of happy travelling as a family. Stagnation set in, as it was becoming more difficult to get nice imports and in 1994, I chatted to Vic and Gerhard Campher, I was told they were going to import a new model from the overseas market. They dangled the carrot, and I had to have it, but did not want to let on to the boys, 3 weeks after order, the 850 landed at Durban harbor. Bright Red, Dark Grey leather and a 5 speed manual box. Vic and I travelled down to collect it. We were like 2 kids on the dockside, waiting patiently for Santa (same color). On our way home the following day, I said to Vic that I wanted the car and the deal was concluded. It was wonderful to drive the new generation car with all the power and superb handling. Kept for 3 years without even a murmur, doing just on 78000kms. Then the real carrot came along, a T5R Wagon, one of only 2 in Africa. I just could not resist this opportunity, the fastest Volvo of its time. Being a bit of a speed freak I pushed it to 270 kmh coming back from Kroonstad one day, on my own. The Custard Slice as my friends called it, was at its best at high speed. Doing a delivery to my best friend in Ballito 4hrs 10min, not a record but absolute pleasure. Into corners, it stuck like s*#t to blanket and powered out like a racing car. After 3 years and over 140000kms, the low profile tyres and speeds I was travelling at, I decided to get rid of it or face possible Jail Time. I then bought a normal S70-T5, great vehicle as well, but after hitting a log on the South Coast highway causing severe damage to the suspension and wheels, I decided to part company with it. I have since bought an S70 and really enjoy driving it because its not easy to get into trouble. It has done 290000 kms and goes along merrily at 120. This shows that Volvo for life, still applies after all these years. Four years ago I bought another 122S B20, it is a 1 owner car and goes like mine did in 1969. Solid as a rock and purrs like a kitten and still hits 100mph on the highway. The old models still have appeal and are just as great to drive as they were back then. 122S minor repairs will follow in the next Letter.

2016 national saamtrek: howard bates obo the committee At our committee meeting held on 16 January 2016 we debated the dates and venue for the Saamtrek, always a difficult one to decide on as there are so many variables, ideas and proposals! At the AGM a number of venues were mentioned, among them Maselspoort. Traditionally we have always held the Saamtrek the 3 rd weekend of October of each year. We know that if we move the Saamtrek out of October we can get places at a low season rates! Accommodation and facilities are just more affordable. As in the past when we change from the norm we take a risk.and this year is no different. Parys cherry on top breakfast run On Sunday 22 November 2015 saw members and non - members from Gauteng rally together and participate in our annual breakfast run to Parys, at the same time the Western Cape guys also did a very successful breakfast run. There were at least 19 Volvo s in attendance and sitting on the upper deck enjoyed the lovely sunshine and company of our Volvo friends. Those travelling on the N1 were in for a nasty surprise when there were protesters and stone throwing resulting the highway being closed and some missing the breakfast and others turning around and finding an alternative route. We stopped at the Aerodrome and from there drove into Parys. This year on the way back Howard popped in at Maselspoort and met with the owner, Reg, and over lunch chatted about the possibility of bringing us back there, and Reg is all fired up and wants us back! Accommodation, he holds the resort for us and happy to negotiate rates and if we book it out and it isn t sufficient he books us another place a few kliks down the road where the accommodation is above average! Venue charges will be reviewed in line with group reservation rates. Accommodation is therefore not a problem, he has all the facilities we need right there, quality food at reduced rates and going there in September instead of October results in low season rates! The 2016 Saamtrek will be held over the weekend 23 25 September 2016 at the Maselspoort Resort. BOOK NOW! We have been there before and it has always been a success. We will start working on the detail with the owner & management and finalise the programme nice and early and if you start planning early and getting all the Volvo s in a row, we can make it one stunning weekend of Volvonatics al together. Volvo Bloemfontein has also shown interest to be involved. Vereeniging Auto Baltic brought the new XC90 and some prizes that we handed out. This event is now a fixed annual event! Thank you all for joining us and for those brought some prizes to give away. Under the spotlight - Member Profile Name: Errol John Club Member since: October? 1998 Home Town & Province: Boksburg, Gauteng How many Volvos do you own now? Three, a 1970 B20, 122 S, a 2003 V40, 2.0 T and a 2015 V40, T4 How many Volvos have you owned? Those above, and a 1999 V40 2 litre, and two C30 s What is your favourite Volvo you have ever owned and why? My 2003 V40, complete with tow bar and roof rack. Every house hold should own a Volvo station wagon, it is very versatile and goes like stink. It is especially useful now while I am in the process of rebuilding my country cottage after the ravages of a fire through Utopia. What Volvo don t you own and wish you had one and why? Why Volvo? My first Volvo was the B20. At the time I was driving a company Toyota Camry which spoilt me for space. When the time came to replace, the decision was a new Camry or a V40? The rest is history. Prior to acquiring any of the new cars, I really considered all options, e.g. Audi, BMW, Merc and VW. When the 2003 V40 reached 230 000km, I needed a new car for tax purposes, the final decision was between a Toyota Corolla or a C30, the heart won the debate. None offered the same value for money. Why you are a member of the Club? The Volvo club stand at the Dome 1998 motoring show got me going. Membership offered me the opportunity to source technical information and spares. This proved useful when I experienced brake problems on the B20. Share a Volvo experience with us: The most momentous was being able to get out of a totalled C30 without even whiplash! A P1800, I still have a Corgi 1 in 40 die cast model, it looked well in the TV series The Saint What was your very first car? 1938 Ford 10.

Volvo Cars reveals safe and seamless user interface for self-driving cars Volvo Cars has revealed one of the industry's most advanced and easy-to-use interfaces to oversee how drivers will transfer control to a car's autonomous driving (AD) mode in its forthcoming cars. When entering a route where autonomous driving is available, the car gives the driver a message that the Auto Pilot is ready. At the same time, lights on the steeringwheel paddles start flashing. The driver pulls both paddles simultaneously to activate autonomous mode. The lights on the paddles then change to constant green and Auto Pilot confirms that the driving and the supervision has been delegated to the car. When autonomous driving is no longer available, the driver is prompted to take over again. A sixty-second countdown is displayed. If the driver, for any reason, doesn't use the paddles to regain control within this minute, the car will bring itself to a safe stop. The advent of autonomous driving technology means that the relationship between a driver and a car's user interface is of crucial significance. A safe and seamless handover of control is the cornerstone of any trustworthy AD technology. Volvo Cars has designed its IntelliSafe Auto Pilot to be simple and intuitive. The autonomous mode is activated and deactivated with specially-designed paddles on the steering wheel. Thomas Ingenlath, SVP Design at Volvo Cars, said: "We have designed a user interface that is safe and seamless to use so that drivers can confidently transfer and regain control of the car." Volvo's new IntelliSafe Auto Pilot will be available for the first time on the one hundred XC90's it is making available for the Drive Me project in Gothenburg in 2017, the world's most ambitious AD project. Drive Me will make 100 self-driving Volvos available to families and commuters around Gothenburg for use in everyday driving conditions. The cars will be driven autonomously on approximately 50 kilometres of selected roads. Following its use in Drive Me, the IntelliSafe Auto Pilot will then be introduced to the general public.
