Agenda What is Cooperative ITS? How is it relevant? Current status System Overview Examples Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 2

What is Cooperative ITS? Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 3

What is Cooperative ITS? Literally: working together Joint activity of: vehicles, infrastructure and central systems Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 4

Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 5

Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 6

Cooperative ITS Is it really relevant right now? Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 7

Imtech Traffic & Infra May 12 May, 12, 2014 8

Imtech Traffic & Infra May 12 May, 12, 2014 9

Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) some examples... Priority Application Strategic Routing Speed Advice Micro-Routing Information Application Flexible Bus Lane Traffic Control Ghost Driver Dynamic Speed Limit Pre-, On-, Post-trip Information Dangerous goods Urban Parking Zones Highway Resting Areas Access Control Road Intersection Safety Lane Change Maneuver Safe Overtaking Rear-End Collision Frontal Collision Warning Slippery Road Curve Warning Imtech Traffic & Infra May 12 May, 12, 2014 10

Cooperative ITS How is it relevant right now? Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 13

C-ITS in the context of traffic management Value added at the most elementary level: Improved input data Improved dissemination of information New range of opportunities arises 1:1 traffic management Effectiveness of traffic management improves? Imtech Traffic & Infra May 12 May, 12, 2014 14

What is possible today? Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 15

Why and how Drivers: Enablers: Emission reduction, Innovation, Safety Standardisation, cooperation Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 16

Priority as we know it Fire brigade Ambulances Public transport Imtech Traffic & Infra May 12, 2014 17

New type of priority Policy Give (conditional) priority to heavy vehicles to encourage eco-driving Why Acceleration for heavy vehicles is expensive 0,3 1,0 litre fuel to accelerate from 0 to 70 km/h Imtech Traffic & Infra 18

In-vehicle Information enables anticipation and reduction of stops Speed advice Remaining green time or time to red Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 19

Value proposition Reduces: Congestion Travel time Fuel consumption Emissions Improves: Traffic flow Safety Accessibility Public Transport services Imtech Traffic & Infra 20

How does it work? Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 21

System Overview Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 22

Trails configured at Roadside For each direction To map-match vehicles Trigger virtual detectors Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 23

Sequence of events (simplified) 1. Vehicle sends out a message with its id and position every second. 2. Road side system checks permissions of vehicle and matches vehicle on the trail. 3. Road side system retrieves the time to red/green from the traffic light controller to sends this to the vehicle along with a speed advice (if available). 4. Roadside system requests priority to the traffic light controller when vehicle is authorized and passes the virtual detector. Imtech Traffic & Infra 12 May, 2014 24
