Updated rear brake shims, rear brake pads, and rear brake caliper mounting brackets are available to reduce the likelihood of this condition occurring. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the squeak is coming from the rear brakes. The condition occurs more frequently when backing up during light brake pedal application after cold soak. Use ChassisEAR if needed to help identify location of noise. 2. Check Vehicle VIN. If the vehicle was built before 1st Production Change Effective VIN follow procedure #1 to replace the rear brake pads, anti squeal shims and rear brake caliper mounting brackets. If the vehicle s VIN was before the 2nd Production Change Effective VIN, follow repair procedure 2 to replace the rear caliper mounts and rear brake pads. If the vehicle s VIN was before the 3rd Production Change Effective VIN, follow Repair Procedure 3 to replace only the rear brake pads. Repair Procedure 1: Rear Brake Pad, Shims and Rear Caliper Mounting Brackets Replacement 1. Remove the rear brake pads, shims and rear brake caliper mounting brackets. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual: Brake Brake (Rear) Brake (Rear): Rear Brake: Removal 2. Install the new rear caliper mounting bracket. Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual: Brake Brake (Rear) Brake (Rear): Rear Brake: 3. Install the No. 1 Anti-squeal shims. Install the No. 2 Anti-squeal shims onto new brake pads 4. Using the Variable Pin Wrench (SST 09960-10010) slowly rotate the caliper piston until the piston groove is positioned as shown in Figure 1.

Install new rear brake anti-squeal shims with new rear brake pads into the rear caliper assembly brackets. Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual: Brake Brake (Rear) Brake (Rear): Rear Brake: Make sure disc brake grease is not applied to the lining of the rear brake pads. CAUTION Do NOT twist the brake hoses on the rear disc brake caliper assemblies. When installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the rear disc brake caliper mounting bracket, ensure the protrusion on the brake pad is centered in the caliper piston groove. It is important to ensure the protrusion is not contacting the outer edges of the caliper piston groove (both sides) 6. Road test the vehicle to confirm the condition has been corrected.

Remove and replace the rear brake caliper mounting brackets and rear brake pads. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual: 2011 : 2. Road test the vehicle to confirm the condition has been corrected. Repair Procedure 3: Rear Brake Pads 1. Remove and replace the rear brake pads.
