Campaign no.: 2006-0006 2007-0002 Date: July 13, 2006 Subject: Fluctuating and Sticking No. 2007-2 Speedometer Needle YEAR MODEL MODEL NUMBER SERIAL NUMBER 2006-2007 Outlander 650 and 800 All Refer to attached listing PROBLEM Some cases of erratic speedometer needle were reported to us. The two major observations are: the needle is becoming unstable and is fluctuating when speedometer is in odometer mode leading to an inaccurate vehicle speed reading; theneedle is sticking at a certain position or will not move below a certain position. speedometer. These metal shavings are generated by the break-in and normal wear of the gears. In the event of an erratic speedometer needle, the speedometer itself is most likely not defective and does not need to be replaced. vmo2006-007-033_g vbs2007-002-001 Further investigation has demonstrated that some speed sensors may generate a stronger magnetic field than others under operation. In this eventuality, too many metal shavings within the gearbox may be collected by the sensor thus creating undesired noise to the signal read by the To validate if this is the case, put the speedometer into the RPM mode by pressing and holding the mode button [1] for 2 seconds when into the odometer mode. NOTE: Multi-function display [2] will show x 100 RPM. Set the vehicle in NEUTRAL, start the engine and apply some throttle to generate RPM variation. Watch the needle movement; if it's smooth and stable, the speedometer is not defective. Printed in Canada. (vbg2007-004 ) 1/5 2006 Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. and BRP US Inc. SOLUTION Replace the original speed sensor (P/N 420 265 622) by a less magnetic version (P/N 420 265 624) that will collect less metal shavings. NOTE: All vehicles not involved within this Warranty Quality Bulletin were built with speed sensor P/N 420 265 624. PART REQUIRED P/N DESCRIPTION QTY 420 265 624 Speed Sensor 1 PROCEDURE Ensure gearbox oil was replaced according to the periodic maintenance chart (at initial inspection, 10 hours / 300 kms and thereafter, every 200 hours / 6000 kms). If maintenance chart was not respected, perform gearbox oil replacement (at customer's expense), and clean magnetic drain plug from any metal shavings. Remove original speed sensor; metal shavings should be found on its surface. Extract any metal shavings located in the speed sensor bore area by using a bar magnet; repeat as necessary. Ensure the output shaft visible from the sensor bore is free from any metal shavings as well (rotate wheels to spin output shaft). Apply grease on speed sensor O-ring to ease its installation. Install new speed sensor (P/N 420 265 624). Torque retaining bolt to 10 N m (88 lbf in). NOTE: Do not apply any thread locking product on bolt. NOTE: The speedometer needle may be erratic when running vehicle immediately after repair procedure; run vehicle for a short period of time at moderate speed to ensure any remaining metal shavings in the sensor area are washed away by the gearbox oil.
