10 Operation - Tractor OPERATING THE TRACTOR SEAT Your tractor is equipped with a deluxe cushioned seat. The seat is adjustable for the operator's height and weight, and it folds back for standing. Moving Seat to Upper Rear Position To adjust the seat for operator's height, loosen the cap screws (8) securing the seat to the rocks haft housing and slide seat to desired position. Then securely tighten cap screws. The deluxe seat is adjustable for operators weighing from 100 to 300 pounds (45 to 135 kg). To adjust, move the seat to the upper rear position to take tension off the spring. Loosen the wing nuts (A) under the weight adjustment link, and move slide to desired weight position. Tighten wing nuts and return seat to the normal position. ROLL-GARD, SEAT BELT, AND CANOPY Lift the release latch (shown). Stand up and lift the seat to the upper rear. To return the seat to the normal position, pull the seat forward. Sit down on the seat to lock it in place. Adjusting for Height and Weight of Operator A-Canopy B-Rol/-Gard C-Seat Belt A protective Roll-Gard (8) with seat belt (C) is available for your tractor. A canopy (A) that fits on top of the Roll-Gard is also available. See page 64 for additional information. A CAUTION: Under almost all operating conditions: 1. Use of the seat belt with the optional John Deere Roll-Gard is recommended. A-Weight Adjustment B-Height Adjustment 2. Use of a seat belt without roll-over protective equipment is not recommended.
Service - Cooling System 57 Removing Thermostat Release the side grille screens (C). Remove all chaff and dirt from the radiator (B) and transmission oil cooler (A). Examine all air passages, and straighten bent fins. Remove all chaff and dirt from the screens, and replace them. Preparing for Cold Weather Prior to cold weather, be sure the cooling system has sufficient antifreeze to provide protection from freezing. Antifreeze A-Upper Radiator Hose B-Fuel Return Pipe C-Thermostat Cover Drain the cooling system and remove the hood (page 53). Disconnect the upper water hose (A) from the thermostat cover (C). Remove the cover retaining screws and lift the thermostat cover off the tractor. Remove the thermostat. With the thermostat in place, install the thermostat cover and connect the upper water hose. Close the drains and fill the system. Cleaning Side Grille Screens, Radiator Core, and Oil Cooler Use only a reliable brand of ethylene glycol (permanent type) antifreeze which contains a rust inhibitor but does not contain a stop-leak additive. After adding the antifreeze solution, run the engine until it reaches operating temperature to allow the thermostats to open. This will make sure that the solution is circulated throughout the entire cooling system. Draining If the cooling system is drained to prevent freezing, drain the engine block and the radiator. When refilling the system, use clean soft water and John Deere Summer Coolant Conditioner. Be sure to recheck the coolant level after starting the engine. A-Transmission Oil Cooler 8-Radiator C-Side Grille Screen Engine Oil COOler Coolant Drain Plug (2640 Only) On 2640 Tractors only, the engine oil cooler must also be drained. IMPORTANT: Never pour hot water into a cold engine or cold water into a hot engine. DOing so might crack the head or the cylinder block. Do not operate the tractor without water for even a few minutes.
