It s in August! Pg. 6 Das Awkscht Fescht! Das Awkscht Fescht is a favorite annual event for members of the Lehigh Valley Corvair Club. Every year, LVCC member Randy Kohler reserves a special section on the show field for our Corvairs, and this year, we ll be holding our August meeting there. Look for us at the LVCC EZ-Up in the Corvair section, 1 PM on Sunday, August 7. As announced in last month s newsletter, you need to pre-register to show your car in this event, and by the time you read this issue of the Fifth Wheel, registration will be closed. But all is not lost if you have forgotten. You can still attend Das Awkscht Fescht as a spectator, and you won t be disappointed. The price of admission is only $7 per person ($2 for kids under 15) and you can spend the whole day here, checking out the 1,000 or so cars that will be on display, (including our Corvairs of course!) And there are plenty of things to see and do besides looking at cars. For example, the shows Antique Flea Market will have more than 600 vendors that are selling and trading everything from hubcaps to owners manuals and memorabilia. In addition, there will be free musical performances daily at the park s band shell. For kids, Easton-based Crayola Corporation will bring their Crayola Corner, an array of jugglers, magicians, ventriloquists, clowns and their special creativity and display center that is an educational potpourri of kid entertainment. And of course, the kids have the nearby swimming pool and playground to romp in. To give the legs a break from walking, bingo is offered in the basement of the main park building. Then there are arts, crafts, antiques and collectibles to include needlework, pottery, dolls, and (Continued on page 6) The Fifth Wheel is published monthly by the Lehigh Valley Corvair Club (LVCC), Inc. We accept articles of interest to Corvair owners for publication. Classified advertising of interest to Corvair owners is available free of charge to all persons. Commercial advertising is also available on a fee basis. Please contact our newsletter editors, Wesley Weiss and Allan Lacki, for details. LVCC is one of the many regional chapters of the Corvair Society of America (CORSA), a non-profit organization that was incorporated to satisfy the common needs of individuals interested in the preservation, restoration, and operation of the Chevrolet Corvair. LVCC caters to Corvair people who live in and around the Lehigh Valley Region of eastern Pennsylvania. This is a very special car club! LVCC dues are $10 a year for CORSA members or $15 a year for non-corsa members.

PAGE 2 THE FIFTH WHEEL JULY 2011 CORVAIR COOLING FAN FOR YOUR PORSCHE! More and more people are realizing the true genius that went into the development of the Corvair! And here s some additional proof. The Porsche 914 racing guys are now swapping out their crankshaft-mounted engine fans for horizontal fans, just like those on our Corvairs! And how are they driving the horizontal fans? With the same twisted-belt configuration as ours! For years, some Corvair owners have fretted about flipping their fan belts, but the Porsche experts realize that a horizontal fan is better for cooling pancake engines. Chris Foley has been road-racing and auto-crossing Porsche 914s for well over 20 years. His company, Tangerine Racing Products, LLC, manufactures and sells a variety of high-performance parts for air-cooled Porsches at http://www.tangerineracing.com/ The products include induction systems, headers, suspension parts, and a cable-actuated throttle linkage for multicarb engines. One of his premier offerings and of major relevance to this article - is a horizontal fan kit for the Porsche 914 s 4-cylinder boxer engine. Here is the text of the ad that appears on the Tangerine Products website: CFR Tangerine Racing Horizontal Cooling Fan Kit installed on a Porsche 914 / Type 4 engine. Horizontal Fan Cooling System I have been using a horizontal fan and custom shroud to cool my race engines since 1998. (The prototype was originally developed by Jay Putnam using Corvair parts and a fiberglass shroud.) After more than 10 years of competition I am satisfied that this is the most effective cooling system for a 914-4. All components are custom manufactured or modified by us specifically for the Type 4 engine. The standard shroud is aluminum but carbon fiber is an available option. Lightweight cast magnesium impeller blower. CNC billet aluminum pulleys. Fan drive ratios available for optimized cooling on any size/output engine. CFR Tangerine Racing Horizontal Cooling Fan Kit. My, that magnesium fan looks familiar! This is a complete bolt-on kit including everything necessary for easy installation. An external oil cooler (not included) is required when the stock oil cooler is eliminated. The stock oil cooler may be retained and is sufficient for lower horsepower applications. The Street version includes custom sealing tin pieces. The Race version replaces the stock engine cross member brackets with an extended mounting plate, providing improved access for a multi-stage dry sump pump mounted in the stock location. Your price: $1599, Includes US Shipping (48 states). Another variation of a horizontal fan kit, this one offered by Reichert of Germany.

JULY 2011 THE FIFTH WHEEL PAGE 3 CORVAIR CLUB ROAD TRIP Members of the Lehigh Valley Corvair Club (LVCC), Philadelphia Corvair Association (PCA), and the New Jersey Association of Corvair Enthusiasts (NJACE) went for a trip to the America on Wheels Museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, June 12. Also visiting the museum were members of a BMW car club, but there were many more Corvairs on hand than BMWs! The assembled Corvair owners were courteously extended the discounted group admission to the museum and split into several small groups, each with a tour guide. The tour guides quickly pointed out that the America on Wheels facility is not an antique car museum. Rather, the guides stressed, it is a transportation museum, albeit one that focuses almost exclusively on road transportation. Being in Allentown, it has an outstanding exhibit dedicated to Mack Trucks made in Allentown for generations as well as a display about the Pennsylvania Turnpike (America s first limited-access highway) and exhibits featuring the area s rich racing history. Cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles are all part of the museum s displays, but the reason for our visit was the justopened 100 Years of Chevrolet exhibit. This modest but well-staged display presents Chevies from all eras (except the 1940s), the earliest car being a 1912 model and the most interesting one being, of course, a 1960 Corvair Monza Coupe. The Corvair, as noted here last month, is owned by Philly club member Larry Asheuer. Larry lovingly detailed his car for this display, and it looks great! Once the museum tour was completed, we all engaged in an impromptu car show in the parking lot, as the museum reserved an area just for the Corvairs. Members of the three Corvair clubs had fun showing off their cars to each other and engaging in lively discussion about body work, engine tuning, road trips, and the usual things that make the Corvair hobby so interesting. Our editor would like to thank Bob Marlow, who wrote the original version of this article for the NJACE Fanbelt newsletter. CHARLIE FRIEND UPDATE Our last issue of the Fifth Wheel included an article on Charlie Friend s Corvair and Open Road Racing. Since then, Charlie wrote back to thank us for the article. Here is what he said: Thank you for the well written article in The Fifth Wheel about me and my Corvair. As an update on my top speed, I ran a 209.7 thru the speed trap in this years Big Bend Open Road Race (April) while participating in the Unlimited class. Unfortunately, shortly after the trap, the engine backfired and I coasted to a stop, out of the running. The brand new bronze distributor gear had sheared. No other damage and I had the car all ready to go for the May NORC as you stated in the article. Although I had never had any problems with the bronze gears before, I'm now running a GM distributor gear that is an iron or steel gear that is "melonized" making it compatible with a billet steel camshaft. I get a lot of questions about running the Corvair at those speeds concerning the aero stability. I have "sneaked up" on my current aero configuration over the years. I started running the Corvair (first version) in ORR in the 120 class over 10 years ago. As I ramped up my speeds over the years, I went thru many aero configurations. The car is very stable at those 200+ speeds now. In fact, I would like to make further aero changes but it is working so well right Larry Asheuer s lovely 1960 Corvair Monza Coupe on display at the American on Wheels Museum in Charlie Friend s 210 mph Corvair. Yeah, that s right. See the license plate? It s STREET LEGAL!

PAGE 4 THE FIFTH WHEEL JULY 2011 now, I'm reluctant to change anything for fear of messing it up. Of course there is no way to test. The only time to "test" is at an event since there is nowhere to run those speeds outside of an ORR event. OUR NEXT LVCC MEETING In May, we made a command decision to go to a summertime meeting schedule. No business meetings will be held in June or July. Our next meeting will occur at the LVCC EZ-Up at the Das Awkscht Fescht car show on Sunday, August 7 at 1 PM. Das Awkscht Fescht will be held at Macungie Memorial Park in Macungie, PA. RECEIVE THIS NEWLETTER IN COLOR VIA EMAIL! Are you one of the few remaining members who receive your copy of the Fifth Wheel by way of US Postal mail? And do you have an email address? If so, we can email the Fifth Wheel to you instead. You ll see it in full-color, and you ll be saving the club the cost of copies and postage, too! Contact our co-editor Al Lacki and let him know. His email address is redbat01@verizon. net. DUES DUE IN AUGUST! Our Postal Address: Lehigh Valley Corvair Club C/o Richard Weidner 2304 Main Street Northampton, PA 18067 Yes, it s that time again! Secretary- Treasurer Dick Weidner will be collecting dues for the August 2011 to August 2012 timeframe at Das Awkscht Fescht. If you can t make it, then please mail your payment to Dick. His address is listed in the Our Postal Address text block at the bottom of this page. LVCC s annual dues remain ridiculously cheap! They are a mere $15, but if you are also a member of the Corvair Society of America (CORSA), then you pay only $10. To qualify for the lesser rate, please provide your CORSA membership identification number! NECC UPDATE June 16,17 & 18, 2011. These were the dates for the NECC Indy Olympics. All in all the Olympics were quite a success! No blown engines and only two flipped fanbelts in three consecutive days of all-out high-performance Corvair driving! Smitty Smith s grandson, Jim Lamacchia, posted the fastest lap time during the time trials at Putnam Park. He was driving his 2006 401 horsepower Pontiac GTO. Michael LeVeque was just 0.3 seconds behind Jim for secondplace in his COMP Class Corvair. In the quarter mile races at Muncie Dragway, Raymond Paul and Jim Vickers tied for first place in bracket racing. Ray was driving his 200 horsepower 1965 Corvair Monza. Jim was driving a V8 Volkswagen Beetle. Yes, Jim Vickers toy is an old-fashioned Beetle with a honking V-8 stuffed up front! And Jim Lamacchia ran the lowest E.T. Club Officers: President: William Remaly Vice President: Dennis Stamm Secr-Treasurer: Richard Weidner Editors: Wesley Heiss & Al Lacki Corvair Olympics. Drag racing at Muncie Dragway, Indiana, USA! of the day at 13.94 seconds. Dave Edsinger ran 15.582 seconds in his COMP Class Yenko Stinger; the best of the Corvairs. Dave Edsinger, Michael LeVeque, and Warren LeVeque came in 1-2-3 in the Connersville Autocross. Dave and Michael drove their COMP class Corvairs. Warren drove his SPEC class roadster, which is a mid-engine Corvair-powered tube-frame special draped in a shorty fiberglass Corvair body. The NECC made a few bucks, too, which will be put to good use in sponsoring the 2012 CORSA Convention in Sturbridge next year! LVCC is an NECC member club. DAVID RIDDLE SAYS HELLO. We recently received an email from one of our former newsletter editors, David Riddle. David wrote, Due to a career change and other things, I have exhausted time on which to spend with old cars. Therefore, I have decided to part with my 1963 Monza. Most members of the club know the vehicle. David s car appears in our Classified Ads this month. See Page 6.
