SAFETY RULES ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. Unfortunately, our efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped out by a single careless act of an operator. In addition to the design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment. It has been said The best safety device is an informed, careful operator. We ask you to be that kind of an operator. The designed and tested safety of this equipment depends on it being operated within the limitations as explained in this manual. INSTALLATION J During installation, the tractor engine should be off, the key removed and the brakes locked. Do not disconnect hydraulic lines until attachments are removed or lowered to the ground and system pressure is released by operating valve levers. Never operate any hydraulic cylinders during any phase of the installation process. J After connecting hoses, check that all control lever positions function as instructed in the Operator s Manual. Do not operate until control lever and equipment movements are correct. TRAINING J Read and understand this manual, the Woods attachment manual and the tractor manual before any operation, assembly or maintenance. Follow all safety rule and safety decal instructions. (Replacement manuals are available from dealer or in the United States and Canada, call 1-800- 319-6637.) Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. J If you do not understand any part of this manual and need assistance, see your dealer. J Keep hands and body away from pressurized lines. Use paper or cardboard, not body parts to check for leaks. Wear safety goggles. Hydraulic fluid (oil) under pressure will easily penetrate skin and can cause serious injury or death. J Make sure that all operating and service personnel know that in the event hydraulic fluid penetrates skin, it must be surgically removed within a few hours by a doctor familiar with this form of injury, or gangrene, serious injury or death can result. CONTACT A PHYSICIAN IMMEDI- ATELY IF FLUID ENTERS SKIN OR EYES. J Do not allow children or untrained persons to operate equipment. PREPARATION J Air in hydraulic systems can cause erratic operation and allows loads or equipment components to drop unexpectedly. Before operating or allowing anyone to approach the equipment, purge any air in the system by operating all hydraulic functions several times after connecting equipment, connecting hoses, or doing any hydraulic maintenance. J After connecting hoses, check that all control lever positions function as instructed in the Operator s Manual. Do not operate until control lever and equipment movements are correct. J Protective sleeves must be over hydraulic hoses and securely fastened onto metal hose fittings as shown in this manual. Replace if damaged or if protective sleeve is not properly positioned or secured. J Make sure all hydraulic hoses, fittings and valves are in good condition and not leaking before starting power unit or using equipment. Check and route hoses carefully to prevent damage. Hoses must not be twisted, bent sharply, kinked, frayed, pinched, or come into contact with any moving parts. Operate moveable components through full operational range to check clearances. Replace any damaged hoses immediately. J Your dealer can supply original equipment hydraulic accessories and repair parts. Substitute parts may not meet original equipment specifications and may be dangerous. J Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing and head. (Safety Rules continued on next page) 3

SAFETY RULES ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! (Safety Rules continued from previous page) J Tractor must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS CAB and seat belt. 3-SPOOL, 3-WAY VALVE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. This installation should be performed by dealer service personnel. It requires special skills and tools WARNING J During installation, the tractor engine should be off, the key removed and the brakes locked. Do not disconnect hydraulic lines until attachments are removed or lowered to the ground and system pressure is released by operating valve levers. Never operate any hydraulic cylinders during any phase of the installation process. J Read and understand this manual, the Woods attachment manual and the tractor manual before any operation, assembly or maintenance. Follow all safety rule and safety decal instructions. (Replacement manuals are available from dealer or in the United States and Canada, call 1-800- 319-6637.) Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. CAUTION J Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing and head. WARNING J Make sure all hydraulic hoses, fittings and valves are in good condition and not leaking before starting power unit or using equipment. Check and route hoses carefully to prevent damage. Hoses must not be twisted, bent sharply, kinked, frayed, pinched, or come into contact with any moving parts. Operate moveable components through full operational range to check clearances. Replace any damaged hoses immediately. In preparation to install these hydraulic components, shut off tractor, remove key and make sure that all system hydraulic pressure is relieved before connecting or disconnecting any lines. Make sure system oil is cool and that you clean the work area of anything that could contaminate the hydraulic system. There are three possible plumbing configurations for the Woods valve. Determine the proper configuration for your tractor hydraulic system. In all cases, the low-pressure TANK hose must be connected directlytothetractor TANK porttopreventvalvedamage from back pressure. The open-center valve without the power-beyond port should only be used on tractors with an OPEN-CEN- TER system when the pressure hose is connected to a tractor remote valve coupler or a diverter valve. An open-center valve with the power-beyond port is required for tractor with an OPEN-CENTER system when the pressure hose must be connected directly to a tractor port of hydraulic lin and pressurized RE- TURN oil is required to operate the tractor 3-point hitch or another accessory valve. The closed-center valve should only be used on tractors with a CLOSED-CENTER system when the pressure hose is connected to a tractor remote valve coupler or another tractor port. One valve kit is available and can be converted to your requirement. IMPORTANT J Check with your tractor dealer or manual to determine if your tractor is equipped with an OPEN-CENTER or a CLOSED-CENTER hydraulic system. J Tractor hydraulic system can be seriously damaged if the incorrect valve configuration is installed. 5

NOTE: Use thread compound or Teflon sealing tape when installing pipe thread fittings. This is not necessary when connecting hoses to swivel end or fittings. IMPORTANT J Use care to prevent foreign material from entering and damaging the hydraulic system. Remove plugs form the three valve ports away from control handles and install 1/2 x 3/8 reducer bushings. Install 3/8 male x 1/4 female swivel elbows into reducer bushings with elbows pointing rearward toward cutter to prevent hose interference with handles. Connecting 3-Spool Valve to Tractor Refer to your tractor manual to determine where to connect the valve hoses to the tractor system. The hoses and fittings supplied in the kit may not fit all tractors. If you are required to substitute any pars, make sure all fittings are of an approved type for the application. Only substitute high pressure hoses for the high pressure applications and lower pressure hoses for the lower pressure applications. For open-center and closed-center systems, connect tank and pressure hoses to tractor tank and pressure fittings. For open-center with power-beyond systems, connect the tank and pressure hoses to tractor tank and pressure fittings and the return hose to rockshaft or loader valve inlet. IMPORTANT J On later Ford 5000 tractors, a valve cover is not required, but Ford hydraulic hose adapter kit (Ford P/N 311891) is required. Install this in the top right front tractor valve port and connect the opposite end to the pressure ort of the Woods 3-way valve. Screw the valve located on the side of the tractor valve to the IN position and place the lever behind the valve in the DOWN position. Clean area and remove the large plug form the top of tractor differential housing. Drill and top this plug for 3/8 pipe threads. Reinstall in the differential and connect the 3-way valvereturntoit. IMPORTANT J When installing the Woods valve on Ford tractor models 2000, 3000, 4000 and early 5000 (that are not equipped with a removeable hydraulic control valve), it is necessary to order Woods valve cover outlet P/N 20580 and install it on the tractor rockshaft housing, replacing the existing cover plate. On later Ford 5000 tractors, a Ford hose adapter kit, Ford P/N 311891, is required. Ford Valve Cover Outlet Installation (Figure 5) Remove cover plate from tractor rockshaft housing and install special valve cover outlet (1). Reuse the O-rings from the existing cover plate and place O-ring (6) under right side of new plate as shown. Secure plate to tractor using the 7/16 x 2-3/4 bolts (9) in the left side, 7/16 x 1-3/4 bolts (8) in the right side and 5/16 x 1-1/2 bolt (7) in the center. Install the swivel fittings in the P, R & T ports as shown. Connect the valve pressure hose to the cover plate port marked P, the valve return hose to the cover plate port marked R and the valve tank hose to the cover plate port marked T. DB1989A 1. Cutter Plumbing Installation (Refer to Illustration on page NO TAG, 3-Spool,3-Way Valve Hydraulic Plumbing) Install reducer bushing (7) and swivel elbow (6) in butt port of height adjustment cylinder. Make sure there is a breather fitting installed in the rod end port. Position elbow to point toward cutter tongue. Install reducers (7) and swivel elbows (6) in rod ends of wing left cylinders. Position elbow to point toward cutter center section. Hose Installation WARNING J Make sure all hydraulic hoses, fittings and valves are in good condition and not leaking before starting power unit or using equipment. Check and route hoses carefully to prevent damage. Hoses must not be twisted, bent sharply, kinked, frayed, pinched, or come into contact with any moving parts. Operate moveable components through full operational range to check clearances. Replace any damaged hoses immediately. Attach hose holder to top H-frame hole. Install hoses in valve ports. Normally the center section will be used for height adjustment cylinder and outer sections for wing lift cylinders. Route hoses through hose holder and along left side of driveline. Secure with clamp bracket on front left corner of center gearbox. Use rubber binding strap to secure hoses and prevent them form becoming entangled driveline. Spool Sticking Any tendency of spools to stick in position is usually caused by one of two things: too much pressure (in excess of 2200 psi), or the valve mounting bolts are pulled down too tightly, unevenly, or are pulling the valve on an uneven surface, thus causing a bind in the valve. Lift Check Service The load lift checks (6) are used to prevent a load such as a wing or height adjustment form dropping prior to starting to raise when a spool is being moved slowly to the raise position from neutral. If these checks leak by so that the load does not hole properly, removed lift checks, inspect the check and seats, and replace if necessary. Do not operate until repairs are completed. Spool Removal The spool is selectively fitted in body and cannot be interchanged or exchanged. However, it may be removed to replace seals, but it si not necessary that it be removed completely. To replace seals on end spool, remove rubber valve cap (9) and unscrew the detent cap located under it. On the center spool, remove snap ring (15), then push spool far enough out back of valve to expose U-cup seals (14) on handle end. Remove and replace with cup facing inward. Remove retaining or detent bolt from other end of spool. Slide spool through the new seal, being careful not to roll the edge over. Slide forward far enough to expose the seal in back of valve. Replace it in the same way, slip spool back into its normal position, and reassemble. SERVICING (Figure 6) IMPORTANT J This valve is extremely close-fitted. Prevent foreign material from entering and damaging valve sealing surfaces. Fitting Leakage Use either Loctiter or a Teflon tape thread sealant on all fittings to prevent leakage. Either one of these products will usually eliminate any leakage problem on the pipe threads. Loctite is a registered trademark of the Loctite Corporation. 9
