GARMIN UPDATE Q: I just got off the phone with Garmin concerning a map update for my 2007 Gold Wing. The gentleman on the phone said the latest version is 2014 (Garmin Part Number: 010.10678 S0.) The link to the page including this information is: https://goldwing.garmin.com/goldwing/site/ viewmapinfo?id=117. I did not wish to purchase updated mapping that is three years old. I asked if there were plans to release an update soon. The response was, "only when Honda requests it." My question is two part. First, does this square with what you know to be fact, and second, where might owners write to Thanks so much for your time. TECH CORNER Mike Ritenour in-fluence Honda to request an update? John Higgins Anderson, South Carolina A: Hi John. You might write to American Honda Customer Support at the address shown in your owners manual, but I really doubt you'll get a positive response. Yes, you got the straight scoop from the Garmin rep. My hunch is that if and when Honda requests it, that request would not be with-out cost (to Honda). Purchases are made directly through Garmin, so it's possible that both Honda and Garmin share in the proceeds, but maybe not. If Honda or Garmin thought there was sufficient market to justify the expense, you can bet either Honda would "request" it, or Garmin would make it available themselves. So the Nav units in 2006 to 2010 models are apparently considered End Of Life products. City Navigator North America 2014.4 is most likely the last update to be offered for those Nav units. To make matters worse, the mapping is probably from 2013, as most CNNA map sets are dated one year later than the data collection. For the 2012 and newer GL1800, CNNA 2015.4 is offered. There might be one or two more. Stu Oltman 3
New Year s Resolutions Well, it s that time of the year when we all promise ourselves that we are going to try to make 2019 a better year than the last one. We are going to lose weight, get healthy, only eat yogurt on ice cream rides. Read more books, watch less TV and actually listen to our better half when they're talking. These are great goals, and I do hope you all get there. But how about some goals in your riding for the next season? Here are a few of mine, and most of these can be done during the winter months. Get the Bike up on a lift and take a good hard look at the tires and brake pads. If the tires are more than a couple of years old, look for dry and cracked rubber. Brake pads are easy to replace if they look worn or have uneven wear. While you are at it, seeing that it s up in the air already, change the oil and get a fresh start in the spring. Let s take a look at your riding gear. How old is your helmet? If you look inside you will find the date of manufacture. If it s over five years, it should be replaced. Helmets are easy to replace, but your head isn t. How about your riding coat? Does it still fit? Or is it like mine, a little snug (it must have shrunk when it got wet.) You don t want any of your movement restricted or the body armor in the wrong places. It s there to protect you. And while you are at it, buy yourself a new pair of gloves. Remember, if you want to use it later in life, cover it up. Contents of the saddle bag. When was the last time you checked the content of your first-aid kit? How many years has it been? If you can t remember, maybe it s time to replace it. Rain suits in good shape? There's nothing worse than a ripped crotch seam in a rain storm. Hand warmers? How about some of what I call the extras. A tire plug kit, Honda tool kit, gorilla or duct tape and zip ties? These are some of my resolutions of things to be done over the course of the winter. If you complete them all, just think how great it will be when that first warm day of spring arrives and all you need to do is suit up, do your T-CLOCK, start up the bike and take in all the joy of that first ride!
