EQUIPMENT: The towing and tie-down equipment discussed in this guide is available through AW Direct, a preferred AAA supplier. Contact your local AAA club representative for special offers available to AAA contractors. 3

AAA Towing and Roadside Assistance Guide, 2010 Lexus GX460 February 2, 2010 SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: GENERAL TOWING INFORMATION Lexus GX460 models are sold only in a Full Time Four-Wheel Drive configuration. NEVER ATTEMPT TO MOVE THESE VEHICLES WITH ONLY TWO WHEELS ON THE GROUND. THE TRANSFER CASE HAS NO TRUE NEUTRAL POSITION AND WILL BE DAMAGED. Wheel-lift and tow dolly or car carrier equipment are authorized methods of towing this vehicle. A car carrier is the preferred method of transporting the GX460. THERE IS NO APPROVED PROCEDURE FOR THE USE OF SLING-TYPE EQUIPMENT ON THIS VEHICLE. When loading or pulling the GX460, DO NOT USE HOOKS OF ANY TYPE ON THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS. Follow only the approved loading procedures specified in the following pages. In an emergency situation where the vehicle will not roll or must be moved for towing access, wheel-jacking equipment, such as Go-Jacks are recommended. NOTE: ALL DRIVE WHEELS MUST BE RAISED BEFORE MOVING. 4

CAR CARRIER LOADING AND TRANSPORTING: The use of car carrier equipment is the preferred method of transporting the new Lexus GX460 vehicles. CAUTION: The curb weight for the GX460 is 5,340lbs. If fully loaded, the gross vehicle weight is approximately 6,600lbs. The GX460 has sufficient ground clearance at the front and rear. Loading onto a conventional car carrier should not require additional ramping in most circumstances. However, clearance at the trailing end of the vehicle should always be monitored as it is loaded. The GX460 does not use a loading eyebolt due to its body on frame construction. It has fixed loops under the front bumper for loading forward facing (See Figure 1). Figure 1 5

The GX460 has a fixed loop for rear loading along with T hook slots on the forward hanger for the rear springs (See Figures 2 and 3). Figure 2 Figure 3 6

Before loading, ensure that the transmission is in Neutral and the ENGINE START STOP button is depressed once so that the green indicator on it is lit to unlock the steering wheel. NOTE: When front loading the GX460 you may encounter contact between your loading bridal and the trim panel below the front fascia (See Figure 4). The lower trim panel can be removed to prevent damage by removing the two thumb screws that secure each panel (See Figure 5). Figure 4 7

Figure 5 Once loaded, set the parking brake and secure the vehicle onto the carrier using wheel strap tie downs. AAA recommends the use of wheel strap tie-downs around each wheel because the Lexus GX460 can be equipped with air suspension. If wheel strap tie downs are not available, the air suspension needs to be turned off before securing the vehicle by the body or frame. Consult the air suspension shut off information in the jacking section of this service guide (page 12). 8

SHIFTER LOCK OVER-RIDE: If there is a problem with the shifter or if the ignition key is not available, the transmission can be shifted out of the park position. This is accomplished by lifting out the small cover to the left of the shifter Park (P) indicator and depressing the button below the cover to allow the shifter to be moved out of the Park position (See Figures 6 and 7). (Figure 6 Shifter with access Plug in Place) (Figure 7 with access plug removed) 9

WHEEL-LIFT TOWING PROCEDURE: If a wheel-lift is used, the procedures shown below must be used with no exceptions. CAUTION: The GX460 is a Full Time Four-Wheel Drive vehicle. It is essential that no attempt be made to move these vehicles with only two wheels lifted. To tow GX460 with a wheel-lift and dolly, observe the following: Secure the one set of wheels firmly to the wheel-lift and the other set of wheels firmly to the dolly. After loading the GX460 onto the dolly and wheel-lift, place the transmission selector in Park and set the parking brake. Use a steering wheel securing device to prevent possible excessive load on the steering column lock. Attach safety chains and tow lights to the vehicle. Ensure that the ignition switch is turned OFF to prevent unnecessary battery drain. Figure 8 Figure 9 10

EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE INFORMATION JACKING: The jack supplied with the GX460 is located in the rear cargo area behind a removable trim panel on the driver s side (See Figure 10). Figure 10 The approved lifting locations are on the frame section to the rear of the front wheels or under the rear axle where the spring attaches to the axle (See Figure 11). Figure 11 11

The jack handle and other tire changing tools are in a tool kit located on the rear cargo door (See Figure 12). Figure 12 Place the jack in its proper location. Ensure that the air suspension is shut off prior to jacking the vehicle. The air suspension switch is located to the passenger side of the transmission shifter (See Figure 13). To lock the air suspension, press the ENGINE START STOP button so that the dash lights are on. Press the air suspension off button. The readout in the dash should indicate that the air suspension is off, if it does not, try starting the engine and pressing the air suspension off button. Figure 13 Once the vehicle reaches a speed of 18 MPH, the system turns itself back on. Observe all standard jacking precautions and ensure that the vehicle is on firm, level ground. As the jack comes in contact with the vehicle body, ensure that it is contacting the correct location on the vehicle. Continue lifting to raise the vehicle high enough to change the tire. 12

TIRE SERVICE: The Lexus GX460 is equipped with a full size spare tire mounted on an alloy rim which is stored under the vehicle and is held in place by a winch and cable assembly. Access to the crank assembly to lower the spare tire is inside the rear cargo door (See Figure 14). Figure 14 You will need to assemble the jack handle tools to lower the spare tire (See Figure 15). Figure 15 13

Insert the jack handle into the lowering socket and turn it counter clockwise to lower the spare tire (See Figure 16). Use caution when lowering the spare tire to prevent damage to the bumper surface when operating the jack handle. Figure 16 Lower the spare to the ground then remove the holding device (See Figure 17). Figure 17 Follow normal tire changing procedures which include securing the vehicle by setting the parking brake and chocking the wheel diagonal from the flat tire. Remove the wheel cover then loosen all the wheel nuts a couple of turns before lifting the vehicle. Lift the vehicle only enough to remove and install the tire. Complete the removal of the lug nuts. When removing the deflated road wheel, ensure that care is taken not to damage the surface of the wheel. 14

CAUTION: Before mounting the spare tire on the vehicle, ensure that the rim and axle mounting surfaces are clean and free from dirt and corrosion. If the spare rim is badly corroded, mounting the spare on the vehicle is not recommended. Instead, transport the vehicle to a repair facility to have the problem corrected. NOTE: Lexus recommends that the wheel nuts be tightened with a torque wrench to 83 foot pounds (112 Newton meters) as soon as possible after changing the wheels. The deflated road wheel can now be stowed under the vehicle where the spare tire was removed from. Stow the spare wheel with the outer surface facing upward. Ensure that it is stored properly and does not contact any suspension components. Place any other tools used to change the tire back in their proper storage location. 15

OUT OF FUEL SERVICE: There are no special precautions needed to refuel a GX460, although it is important to take care not to damage the vehicle s finish during refueling. The fuel filler is located on the left-hand (driver s) side of the vehicle on the rear quarter panel and is covered by a locking door. A button on the lower left side of the dash opens the fuel filler door (See Figure 18). Figure 18 If the fuel filler door is inoperative due to a discharged battery or other trouble, there is an over-ride in the jack storage compartment on the left side of the rear cargo area behind a removable trim panel (See Figure 19). Look for the wiring harness in this compartment as the level is just behind the bracket securing the wiring harness in place. Figure 19 16

JUMP-STARTING: The Lexus GX460 has one battery which is located under the hood. It is positioned on the left (driver s) side of the engine compartment near the engine cooling fan shroud (See Figure 20). Figure 20 The following jump-starting procedures should be followed when rendering assistance to a Lexus GX460: Never use jump-starting equipment that can exceed normal 12-volt charging system voltage. Ensure that all electrical accessories and the ignition switch are turned OFF before connecting jumper cables or a jumper box to the discharged vehicle. As this vehicle uses a proximity sensor style key, it is recommended that the key not be in the vehicle when making any of the following connections. Once the connections are complete, re-introduce the key to the vehicle. This will prevent circuits from becoming live and reduce the chance of voltage spike damage. If using jumper cables, make connections in the following order: 1. Connect the positive (+) jumper cable to the positive battery terminal of the discharged vehicle and to the positive (+) battery terminal of the donor vehicle or jumper box. 2. Connect the negative (-) jumper cable to the negative battery terminal of the donor vehicle. (Skip this step if using a jumper box.) 3. Connect the negative (-) cable to a good ground on the engine of the discharged vehicle. The bracket just to the rear of the engine oil fill tube is a good location for this connection. 17

Allow the discharged battery to charge for a few minutes before attempting to crank the engine. To crank the engine, close all doors, depress the brake pedal, then press the ENGINE START STOP button on the dash (See Figure 21). Figure 21 If the engine still does not crank, ensure that the security system is functioning properly. Before checking the jump-start connections, remove the proximity sensor key from the vehicle. Re-check the jump-start connections then reintroduce the key to the vehicle and attempt to start it. If the problem persists, tow the vehicle. 18

PROXIMITY SENSOR KEY: The Lexus GX460 uses a proximity sensor key. The vehicle knows that the key is approaching the vehicle and will unlock the doors when the handle is touched. It also knows when the correct key is in the vehicle and will allow the push button start feature to activate. In circumstances where this system does not function properly, such as a discharged battery in the key fob, the vehicle may still be operational. To access the vehicle when the proximity sensor feature doesn t work, remove the metal key portion from the key fob and use it to unlock the driver s door (See Figure 22). Figure 22 Once you are inside the vehicle, attempt to start it through the normal means of closing the doors, depressing the brake pedal while pressing the ENGINE START STOP button on the dash. If the vehicle fails to start, look at the display in the center of the instrument cluster. If it reads KEY NOT DETECTED (See Figure 23), there is still a means of starting the vehicle. Figure 23 19

Hold the key fob with the Lexus logo facing toward the dash. Place the key fob next to the chrome ring surrounding the ENGINE START STOP button. Depress and hold the brake pedal while pressing the ENGINE START STOP button (See Figure 24). Figure 24 Both AAA and Lexus appreciate your dedicated service to providing roadside assistance to Lexus owners and important service you provide to the entire motoring public. 20
