INTRODUCTION Magne c Pumping Solu ons offers the MAG LINE of Cables that is suitable for the installa on with ESP systems in oil, water and gas producing wells. The ESP cable is a special product that is specially engineered to work under the extreme condi ons in an oil well. Oil wells are very diverse in nature, with regard to se ng depth, temperature, pressure, presence of corrosive/erosive, and dimensions. These varia ons call for careful selec on of the cable design for each different applica on. Cable is available in both round and flat profile. Round profile cable is normally used in oil wells but if there is physical space limita on between the tubing and the casing, the flat profile is used. Low temperature, shallow set applica ons can usually run on Flat profile cables without any issues. The standard material used for the manufacture of ESP cable conductors is Copper. The Annealed copper conductors are nned in order to increase their resistance to oxida on and a ack by other gases during opera on and also to improve the adhesion of the conductor to the insula on material. Standard ESP cable is a three core cable with solid or stranded & compacted conductors between #6AWG and #1 AWG wire size, on each phase. In addi on to the three phases, an op onal instrument wire or a stainless steel line can be included into the cable design. The insula on and jacket material is selected based on the well condi ons and applica on requirements. The factors that determine the insula on material are temperature, pressure, presence of high amount of gas, opera ng voltage and the amount of physical stress that is put on the cable. Standard insula on materials are EPDM and Polypropylene and the standard jacket materials are EPDM, Lead and Nitrile. Lead is used as a jacket material in cable that is used in wells with high amounts of gas or corrosives. Lead acts as a barrier and prevents the ingress of gas, chemicals and oil into the insula on and the conductor, thereby preven ng gas decompression or corrosion, which are the two most common failure modes for standard cable when used in these condi ons. In addi on to the insula on and jacket, tape and /or braid is wound over the insulated conductor. The tape forms a barrier against the ingress of fluid and gas into the conductors. The braid provides addi onal mechanical strength to the insulated conductors. The armor on the cable provides mechanical strength and protec on to the cable. The material of the armor can be Galvanized Steel, Stainless Steel or Monel the selec on of armor material is based on the corrosiveness of the fluid in the well in which the cable is installed. CABLE RANGE MAG LINE: PL 205 (PN) The PL 205 cable has Polypropylene insula on with a Nitrile rubber jacket. Maximum opera ng temperature ra ng is 205 o F (96 o C). Cable in round or flat profiles with a maximum voltage ra ng of 3kV, 5kV or 6kV are available in this range. This cable is ideal for water wells and for oil wells with high water cut, low bo om hole temperature and negligible GLR. MAG LINE: PL 285 (EN) The PL 285 cable has EPDM insula on with a Nitrile rubber jacket. Maximum opera ng temperature ra ng is 285 o F (140 o C). Cable in round or flat profiles with a maximum voltage ra ng of 3kV, 5kV or 6kV are available in this range. This cable is ideal for oil wells with low GLR and where the bo om hole temperature is not very high. MAG LINE: PL 400 (EE) The PL 450 cable has EPDM insula on with an EPDM jacket. Maximum opera ng temperature ra ng is 400 o F (204 o C). Cable in round or flat profiles with a maximum voltage ra ng of 5kV or 6kV are available in this range. This cable is ideal for oil wells with high bo om hole temperatures, low to medium GLR and medium to high bo om hole pressure. MAG LINE: PL 450L (EL) The PL 450L cable has EPDM insula on with a Lead Sheath jacket. Maximum opera ng temperature ra ng is 450 o F (232 o C). Cable in flat and round profiles with a maximum voltage ra ng of 5kV or 6kV are available in this range. This cable is ideal for oil wells with high bo om hole temperatures, high GLR and high bo om hole pressure. CABLE POWER LOSS It is very important to determine the losses in the cable especially the heat generated and dissipated into the well bore during opera on before selec ng the cable for an applica on. The voltage drop across the cable is a direct rela on of the current and the resistance of the cable (V=IR). The power loss in the cable is a func on of the square of the current and the resistance of the cable (P=I 2 R). Selec on of a smaller diameter cable that will reduce the capital cost may significantly increase the opera ng cost due to the power loss in the cable. It is always be er to select a motor with higher voltage and lower current to reduce the transmission loss in the ESP cable. It should also be noted that high opera ng voltage may be an issue when using variable frequency drives due to the harmonics generated and this needs to be reviewed at the ESP design stage.
