Issue 2 2014 Letter of the month Got something to say? Give us your feedback and the 3 best letters of the month will be rewarded with exclusive Mitsubishi Motors premiums! Write to us at Evolution Level 6, Building A Peremba Square, Saujana Resort Seksyen U2, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor or e-mail editor@mitsubishi-motors.com.my MESSAGE from the CEO Greetings from Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, and Selamat Hari Raya to all our customers and partners. We hope you had a great time celebrating with family and friends or just recharging and enjoying the break. Over the Ramadhan period, Mitsubishi dealers held Buka Puasa events that combined celebration with charity. It is a good tradition, and a heartwarming one too when you see the smiles on the children s faces. The ASX compact SUV is now locally assembled in Malaysia, and a more affordable price makes it a more attractive package. MMM recently organised a test drive event for the media to Port Dickson, and most of them came away from the refresher course impressed. The SUV segment is a growing and competitive one, but we are confident that the ASX stands out with a good blend of premium features, drivability and value for money. Read the media review on page 8. It was a case of mission accomplished for Mitsubishi at the recent 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb! After coming close in the past two editions, MMC finally won the Electric Modified Division of the famous race when Greg Tracy crossed the finish line. Hiroshi Masuoka completed top 2 for the team. Tracy, a six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion also came second overall, while Masuoka was third overall in the difficult 20 km course, making the victory sweeter. The MiEV 111 race car serves as a test bed for Mitsubishi s advanced electric vehicle technology, which will be seen in road cars in the future. Finally, as part of MMC s corporate philosophy of Drive@earth, and our efforts to go green, Evolution newsletter is going digital from January 2015 onwards. So from next year, you will be getting Evolution in your e-mail inbox instead of your actual mailbox. To make sure that you continue to receive Evolution and news from us, register yourself as a Mitsubishi owner at www.mitsubishi-motors.com.my if you haven t already done so. Look out for the Owners Profile section on the main page. Happy Merdeka to all Mitsubishi customers and drive safe! news Issue 2 2014 Mitsubishi National Sales Olympiad Sales consultants battle it out for the ultimate accolade Athletes have the Olympics to prove their mettle, Mitsubishi sales consultants have the National Sales Olympiad. A prestigious competition for our Sales Consultants (SC), the annual event is divided into three stages - preliminary, semi-final and final. Each sales outlet can only have one top sales consultant to represent his dealership. The contest includes an examination with 50 questions covering product knowledge, the standard sales process (SSP) and also soft skills - all vital requirements for an SC. One and a half hours was the time given for the test. The SCs then had to go through an interview process. Each was given 10 minutes to do a six-point walk around of a Mitsubishi car. Judges evaluated them on the same three areas - product knowledge, SSP and soft skills. The preliminary round was held in June at the Kota Damansara training centre. 43 outlets sent their best sales consultant to do battle. The top three SCs from each region will be competing in the semi-finals in September. They will go through an intensive three-day course in August to improve their skills as preparation for the finals. The National Sales Olympiad is one of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia s efforts to improve both the selling process and the sales personnel to serve customers better. Good luck to the chosen ones! Hey Mitsubishi owners! In conjunction with the 2014 Merdeka Celebrations, we invite you to send in the most creative photo of your Mitsubishi vehicle with the Jalur Gemilang! Selected entries stand to win exclusive Ralliart merchandize. Send your entries to editor@mitsubishi-motors.com.my 3

Issue 2 2014 news Ingress Motors Centre celebrates first anniversary Ingress Motors Centre (IMC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ingress Corporation Berhad and Mitsubishi Motors authorised dealer, recently celebrated its first anniversary. The company currently has a 4S centre in Bandar Bukit Puchong, Selangor. The RM2.2 million, 31,000 sq ft three-storey facility provides sales, spare parts and spray painting/body repair (4S) services. The outlet, which has 12 service bays, also has charging facilities for the Mitsubishi i- MiEV electric car. Located along the Damansara Puchong Highway (LDP), the facility also serves as IMC s headquarters. Principal Dealer IMC, Mohd Azeman Mohamed Akram said that new facilities in the pipeline include tyre sales and services plus a car accessories centre with Ralliart branding. We want to enhance our quality of service and service offerings to customers with aspirations to become market leader in the sales of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in line with IMC s core principle which emphasises on quality aspects, which is the key to customer satisfaction, said Principal Dealer, Mohd Azeman Mohamed Akram. JM Auto Gallery (Alor Star) opens new 3S centre in Kangar Perlis was the only state in Malaysia without a Mitsubishi Motors representation, until now. JM Auto Gallery (Alor Star) opened the first 3S centre in the northern state s capital city, Kangar, in July. The new Kangar 3S centre will serve Mitsubishi owners in Perlis, who previously had to commute to Alor Setar in Kedah for servicing. It will be of great convenience to customers in Perlis, saving them time and effort. JM Auto Gallery (Alor Star) took the 3S centre opening as a chance to hold a Buka Puasa gathering in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan. Close to 300 guests attended, including 100 orphans and five single mothers from various charities. 4

news Issue 2 2014 Running for a good cause in Batu Pahat, Johor Nothing like running for a good cause, and that was what Mitsubishi dealer MM Supreme Batu Pahat had in mind with the ASX run. Held in May, the event saw 1,026 participants sweating it out for charity. A total of RM10,260 was collected from the run, and proceeds were distributed to three organisations - Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Society Malaysia, Pertubuhan Kasih Sayang Daerah Batu Pahat and Rotary Club Batu Pahat. Each received RM3,420. While the adults were running for a good cause, the children were kept entertained by a colouring contest. A happy, healthy day out for all! JM Auto Gallery brings joy to orphans Mitsubishi dealer JM Auto Gallery recently organised a makan-makan session with orphans from Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah in Butterworth, Penang. The activity was part of the company s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Attended by 16 children and staff from JM Auto Gallery and Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, the lunch event at McDonalds Tesco Alma in Bukit Mertajam, gave the children a happy day out. Happy Meals aside, the children participated in games and celebrated birthdays at the fast food restaurant. Mr Soren Ng, General Manager at JM Auto Gallery, distributed goodie bags to the kids and staff from Shammah, before a photo session ended the day. 5

Issue 2 2014 news Spring in the Step for Charity MMM sponsors and supports The Spring Live Active Run 5am- All set to run! Running is a healthy and increasingly popular activity, so what s better than it? Running for a good cause, of course! Team MMM recently participated in The Spring Live Active Run 2014 in Kuching, Sarawak. Led by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia CEO Tetsuya Oda, the 30 strong team included personnel from Mitsubishi dealers EON Auto Mart and Jimisar Autotrade. The run was divided into several categories - 21km, 10km, a 5km Fun Run and a 1km Kids Dash. Over 20 countries were represented in the Live Active Run, with runners from Japan, UK, USA, France, Kenya and Mexico joining the locals. The Spring Live Active Run, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort aimed at both promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising funds for charity, is the largest community event in Sarawak. This year, participants raised a total of RM60,000 for four charities - Sarawak Hospice Society, Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group, Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics Sarawak. MMM has been a proud sponsor of the event since 2012. Making a guest appearance in Kuching was the 2014 Mitsubishi ASX, now locally assembled in Malaysia and available with 4WD. The ASX recently won the Best Locally Assembled SUV title in the Asian The Auto ASX Allianz CKD team! Auto Industry Awards 2014. CEO of MMM Tetsuya Oda with the winners of Live Active Run 6

news Issue 2 2014 Mitsubishi poised for growth MMC Chairman and CEO Mr. Osamu Masuko outlines growth plans during visit to Malaysia Despite gradual liberalisation and increasing competition within the automotive industry, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MMM) believes that it is capable of boosting its sales by introducing more innovative models into the market. MMM chief executive officer Tetsuya Oda says the company is targeting 24% growth in sales to 15,600 units this year. He believes its locally assembled Mitsubishi ASX sports-utility vehicles (SUV) and the company s current best-seller, the Mitsubishi Triton pick-up truck, will help MMM achieve its target. The Triton is a volume seller and our bread-andbutter product. Last year, we sold 7,000 units, Oda tells StarBizWeek. He says the Triton has been well received due to its stylish design, comfortability and reliability. We are looking to introduce a new Triton by our next financial year and a new Pajero Sport the following year. Oda says MMM is also looking at the possibility of assembling a second model locally. The ASX is currently being contract-assembled at Tan Chong Motor Assemblies Sdn Bhd s Segambut plant. By 2016, we are aiming at selling more than 20,000 Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia. Oda adds that MMM is also looking at expanding its dealer network in the country. We have 58 sales outlets currently. Within the next two years, we re looking to open 10 more. According to data by the Malaysian Automotive Association, MMM was the fourth highest selling non-national carmaker last year with 12,348 units sold. It was the sixth highest seller in terms of overall total industry volume for the year. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) chairman and CEO Osamu Masuko says Malaysia is poised for robust growth, especially following the various liberalisation policies that have been announced under the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2014. Malaysia has achieved solid economic Masuko (left) with Oda posing with the ASX locally assembled growth along with Asean. The Malaysian consumer has become more sophisticated, so it s only natural that many players are looking to enter the Malaysian market, Masuko says. Under the NAP unveiled in January, Malaysia has been positioned as a hub for the manufacture and production of energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs) which are automobiles that meet a set of defined specifications in terms of carbon emission levels and fuel consumption. EEVs include fuel-efficient vehicles, hybrids, electric vehicles and alternatively fuelled vehicles, such as compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen and fuel cell. Malaysian-owned Go Automobile Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (GAM), in partnership with China s Great Wall Motor Co Ltd (GWM), became the first company to be granted an EEV licence in April this year. With the expectation of more players coming into the Malaysian market, Masuko says MMC would need to essentially step up its game as it gears up for intense competition. More competition means more players, which means more choices for customers. Masuko with MMM dealers Therefore, we need to see how we can accentuate the quality of our products and get people to better appreciate our vehicles, says Masuko. For its fiscal year 2013, MMC s global retail sales totalled 1.05 million units, which was a 6% or 60,000-unit increase over the previous corresponding period. Sales volume in Asia came to 344,000 units, a 4% or 13,000-unit decrease year-on-year. Robust sales in China as well as the Philippines and Indonesia, both recording highest-ever sales volumes, contributed in minimising the overall drop in the region. Sales volume in Japan totalled 143,000 units during the period, which was a 7% or 9,000-unit increase year-on-year, while sales in North America amounted to 97,000 units or 8% up year-on-year, buoyed by the introduction of its new Outlander and Mirage models. Vehicle sales in Europe, meanwhile, grew 11% year-on-year to 202,000 units. Collective sales in Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa grew 14% to 261,000 units. Going forward, MMC has put in place a mid-term business plan, called New Stage 2016, a strategy to grow its business from 2014 right up to 2016. Under this business plan, we need to set new goals and challenge ourselves, Masuko says. But to be able to realise our goals, we also need to bring in new ideas in terms of management, he adds. According to a statement by MMC, it is targeting retail sales volume of 1.43 million units by 2016, which is a 30% growth compared with 2013. The company says it will achieve this by increasing the proportion of its strategic products, namely pick-up trucks, SUVs and crossover models, to 63% of sales volume in 2016 from 57% in 2013. MMC also expects this range of products to comprise 74% of net sales in 2016 from 68% in 2013. Development-wise, our four-wheel drive and SUVs will be our focus going forward as we believe we can excel at this. We also want to enhance the development of environment-friendly technology, says Masuko. 7

Issue 2 2014 MEDIA REVIEW Let us first assure you that Mitsubishi has gone to great lengths to ensure their Malaysian product meets their normally-high Japanese standards. 2014 Mitsubishi ASX (CKD) Quick Review: Standing Tall And Attainable Open for bookings since January this year, and making its showroom appearance the month after, it s admittedly been a while since Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has had this on the road. Recently however, they ve organised a quick trip out of town for members of the media to all at once get a glimpse of the new 2014 Mitsubishi ASX variants, here, in the form of a 2WD and a new 4WD model. Recapping what s what, both variants of the locally-assembled SUVs feature an impressive equipment list offered as standard, including auto rain and light sensors, leather seats, GPS navigation, and reverse cameras. Unique to the new 4WD version however, is a panoramic sunroof, paddle shifters, keyless-entry and engine push-start button, Active Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist and a security window tint. And of course, assembled locally at the Tan Chong Motor Assemblies (TCMA) facility, they re both more affordable than their previous 2WD CBU (imported, RM139,981) counterpart. Even the fully-equipped highest-spec 4WD model undercuts it by some RM7,500. Buyer s Guide: With first thoughts surrounding locally assembled vehicles typically to do with build quality, let us first assure you that Mitsubishi has gone to great 8 Story by Chris Aaron, Live Life Drive lengths to ensure their Malaysian products meet their normally-high Japanese standards. And fortunately, the cars we had themselves appeared right out of the factory almost, giving us a good chance to inspect the workmanship. The results? Well, to be honest, they re quite good actually. Apart from a few minor finishing inconsistencies between all the cars we had, there s really nothing to complain about. Remembering the CBU model, the new CKDs feel a lot more refined by comparison, in more areas than just its build quality. Introducing the new 4WD: Just in case you missed it, a new 4WD variant was introduced along with the announcement of the ASX s local assembly. Underneath the hood, all the same powertrain fitments as the familiar 2WD are found (2.0-litre MIVEC, CVT). However, on top of being nearly RM7,500 cheaper than the previous fully-imported 2WD model, the 4WD ASX has (as mentioned above) lots more to offer for equipment and features. Usefully, it gets a full keyless system (entry and engine start), Active Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist and a 4mil security tint. So which one should you get? Mitsubishi was kind enough to share that the market demand for the 4WD and 2WD is at a 55% to 45% split in favour of the 4WD makes sense when you consider just how affordable the entire package really is in comparison with some of the ASX s competitors. On highways where the ASX excels nicely for out-of-town excursions, the 4WD s cruise control option does come in handy, while being able to switch between 2WD and 4WD modes on-the-fly at whatever speeds can potentially save you loads in fuel, and get you unstuck from deep mud.

MEDIA REVIEW Issue 2 2014 The 4WD ASX has lots more to offer for equipment and features. Usefully, it gets a full keyless system, Active Stability Control, Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist Members of the media highlighting the unique features of the ASX However, do remember that this isn t a full-on off-roader: the rear wheels don t entirely lock (even in 4WD Lock mode), but simply allocates more power to the rear wheels than in the middle 4WD Auto mode. At most, you ll be able to tread your way on and off a sandy beach and get over a few rocks with ease. Leave the steep hill-climbs and river crossings to true 4X4s; something that ought to be perfectly fine with potential owners of the ASX. It stands to reason that a good majority of customers have leant towards the 4WD version for its great value for money, full-suite of equipment, and everyday practicalities. And seeing as how rival base models cost so much more than the ASX s range topper, it s even less of a surprise. Although, you may want to consider adding an extra layer of tint to the moon roof should you ever decide on parking this outdoors on a typical Malaysian day. Verdict: Should you buy one? No question about it, the CKD Mitsubishi ASX is a good driver, both versions included. Long highways are comfortably dealt with by the car s good exterior noise insulation, and a pretty impressive ride quality. The SUV proportions of the ASX tend to go unnoticed without any wallowing, or sacrificed surrounding visibility. And while it isn t encouraged or often appreciated in an SUV, the ASX handles quite well too. Given that you don t treat it like a hardened sports car, you will be able to enjoy briskly navigating a few B-roads, although, exuberant dads who floor it may not appreciate the cabin-intruding engine noise which is maintained at 6,000rpm or so, courtesy of the stepless CVT cogs in auto mode. 2014 MITSUBISHI ASX Key Specs: 13.2km/l (2WD) Engine: 2.0-litre MIVEC Transmission: INVECS-III CVT (six virtual speeds) Horsepower: 150PS @6,000rpm Torque: 197Nm @ 4,200rpm Fuel consumption: 10.5 to 12.5-litres/100km (observed) 2014 Mitsubishi ASX That said, driving it as you normally would on any given day, the cargo potential and daily driveability of the ASX is as good as it gets. There are a few setbacks with the slightly cramped interior, and admittedly, the larger Honda CR-V s very cleverly packaged cabin is too hard to beat. On the other hand, the 2.0 CR-V has an asking price of RM149k, nearly RM30,000 more than the humble Mitsubishi here. And when you consider inclusions like the above-average infotainment offerings, competitive performance, and all the right safety features, it s easy to forgive any minor shortcomings of the ASX. 9

Issue 2 2014 news Mitsubishi Miev Evolution III Conquers Pikes Peak! Mitsubishi Motors wins the Electric Modified Division, finishes second overall I am pretty sure that the data and experienced gained through this Pikes Peak participation will bring extreme value as we further develop the electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies in the future. Hiroshi Masuoka It was a case of third time lucky for Mitsubishi Motors at the 2014 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in July. After coming close in 2012 and 2013, MMC has won the Electric Modified Division as well as finishing second overall in the world famous race. Greg Tracy, a six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion, delivered both honours with at time of 9:08.188. Two-time Dakar Rally champion and team captain Hiroshi Masuoka set a time of 9:12.204, finishing second in the Electric Modified Division and third overall, completing a sweet outing for MMC. Romain Dumas was fastest up the 20 km course with a time of 9:05.801. Both Tracy and Masuoka drove the MiEV Evolution III all-electric race car, an improved version of last year s racer. Total output of the four motors were boosted along with downforce, while the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system was improved for more traction and reduced wheel slip. I am extremely happy to be able to deliver this Electric Modified class victory to Mitsubishi Motors. This win means that I am a winner both in two-wheel and in four-wheel vehicles, transitioning towards four wheels was because I really wanted to race with an electric vehicle, Tracy said. The Mitsubishi Motors team prepared a fantastic race car for me. I want to thank the team 10 and also Masuoka-san who helped to develop this phenomenal race car to capture this win. This victory is truly a team effort. The road surface condition today was rather slippery but the S-AWC had eliminated any unnecessary drift of the car, and I was able to attack turns all the way to the top with full confidence, he added. The weather was picture clear today and without any concern with the rain coming in, so I was able to drive aggressively all the way to the summit. If I was to rate to my driving today, I would say it was about 95 points out of 100. I could not deliver a win but I am proud to be able to assist on a one-two finish for the team, Masuoka chipped in As we competed in Pikes Peak for three years with an electric vehicle, we were able to develop an advanced racing machine while learning further about high-level technologies. Additionally, we were able to see the young and upcoming engineers mature through this program. I am pretty sure that the data and experience garnered through this Pikes Peak participation will bring extreme value as we further develop the electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies in the future, the MMC test driver said. All the tech used and experience gained from Pikes Peak will eventually filter down to MMC s road cars. The mountain serves as a test bed for Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi Motors has entered the Pikes Peak Hill Climb three years in a row since 2012, viewing it as an opportunity to verify the performance of major EV components. In the 2012 race we were able to verify the performance of the motors and battery module from the production model under grueling conditions. In 2013 using motors and battery still under advance development we were able to verify the performance potential of these components as well as their durability under real-world driving conditions, revealed Kanenori Okamoto, Corporate GM of MMC s EV Business Office. In the 2014 Pikes Peak, we have verified these components durability performance and will reflect them in our next-generation EV and PHEV models. In addition, we will use data from the race to not only to improve four-wheel control technologies - one of MMC s specialties - to allow future cars to drive faster and with greater stability, but also use Pikes Peak experience to further educate our control system engineers, he added. MMC will continue to develop four-wheel control technologies in its e-evolution (integration of electric-motor drive and S-AWC) programme, as announced in the New Stage 2016 mid-term business plan.

news Issue 2 2014 Triple awards joy for Mitsubishi ASX, Pajero Sport and Mirage continues winning tradition L ike proud parents, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is happy that three of its models won awards by the local media. The Mitsubishi ASX was named the Best Local Assembled SUV at the recent Asian Auto Allianz Auto Industry Awards 2014. The CKD ASX, launched in January, is powered by a 2.0-litre MIVEC engine paired to a smooth CVT. Available in 2WD and 4WD, the compact SUV is priced from RM114,543.50, delivering great value in the segment. The ASX was recognised by the panel of judges for its build quality that was no different from the Japan CBU version.
