Dimming less is more The term Dimmer returns 28,100,000 search results in Google. This figure alone gives a sense of the importance of light dimming in a world that's becoming increasingly focused upon energy savings. Light dimming technology allows for artificial lighting to be gradually integrated with natural lighting within any given environment, thus allowing for reduced consumption, while at the same time ensuring the necessary lighting for carrying out the tasks at hand. Thanks to the use of electronic regulators capable of limiting the power consumed by a given load as desired using simple buttons (such as the lighting system in an office, for example), lighting systems can now be equipped with potentiometers, light and motion sensors, and even complex control systems that make use of control units and signal amplifiers. These elements are capable of providing remarkable results: in fact, with lighting control systems based on the combined use of natural light and occupancy sensors, it's even possible to obtain an energy savings of up to 80%. There are various types of light Dimming devices: from those which are used in the home for adjusting individual lamps, to those that regulate the light intensity of entire lighting systems, such as those found in theatres or other large complexes. The first electronic dimmer was developed in 1961 by Joel Spira, the founder of Lutron Electronics. (source: Wikipedia) 4

The ability to adjust the light output from 1% to 100% for fluorescent lamps (from 3% to 100% for compact fluorescent lamps) - with the exception of wiring devices with special lamps that do not allow for significant dimming. The two worlds of Light Dimming: 1-10V ANALOGUE and DALI DIGITAL The two most widely diffused systems in the 3F Filippi product range are currently the 1-10 Volt analog system and the DALI digital system. The main Supplied of both systems are listed below: Supplied of the 1-10V interface The system's regulation is governed by a continuous voltage signal, which is immune from disturbances and varies from 10V (maximum brightness and circuit open) to 1V (minimum brightness and circuit closed). The regulation power is dispensed by the electronic power supply. It is often used for lighting control systems that require simple adjustments, but at a reduced cost with respect to the digital system. DALI interface characteristics With the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) protocol, the adjustment takes place via a digital signal, thus allowing for greater flexibility and ease of installation (with respect to the 1-10V interface) for a wide range of applications. The interface has an automatic feature for detecting the devices connected to the lighting system, and even provides feedback on their current status (on, dimmed, burnt lamp, etc.). It is possible to adjust the dimming speed and to identify groups with different settings: the dimming, activation and shut down functions (which are separate for analogue connections) can be combined on a single line. The interface is capable of controlling up to 64 separate units (individual addressing), or else a maximum of 16 groups (group addressing) and a maximum of 16 saved scenes (lighting scene values). In systems managed by the DALI interface, many functions are saved in the individual electronic power supplies, including the addressing, the assigned group, the shut down time, the emergency lighting level and the activation value. The structure allows for the use of sensors, buttons, control keypads, touch panels and PCs, with a maximum wiring length of 300 metres between the various utilities. Case history Maserati Automobili Facility In 1940 a factory was established in Modena for the production of the world's most magnificent sports cars: it was the home of Maserati, one Italy's pioneering companies for automotive excellence. A place where dreams come true. In order to realize this dream, Maserati turned to a reliable partner in 3F Filippi, whose products were used to illuminate the company's 40 thousand square metre production facility. The main product employed within the scope of this project was the Beta i3f 762x58 HF Ampio, a steel industrial unit from the "Waterproof and anti-corrosion" line, designed for use with fluorescent lamps. Thanks to the use of a high-performance diffuser, the Beta i3f is capable of diffusing the light in an broad manner in order to illuminate large areas with high levels of lighting.
