HOW DOES SOLAR ENERGY WORK? CONVERTING SUNLIGHT INTO ELECTRICITY When Sunlight hits a solar panel it produces electrons on the surface of the silicon material that it s made of. (Silicon is a semiconductor material that naturally releases electrons when exposed to sunlight). The negatively charged electrons migrate to the positive side of the solar panel circuit and are either stored as energy in a battery or the energy is immediately used for devices connected to the solar system. Solar panels produce direct current (DC Power) therefore their energy must be converted to AC (alternating current) before it can be used with every day appliances. This is accomplished by using an inverter. An inverter is a device that converts the DC power to AC power and also converts the solar panel s or battery s low voltage range of (12 volt, 24 volt or 48 volt) to a normal range of 120 volt or 240 volt that is typically used by your appliances. WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONOCRYSTALLINE AND POLYCRYSTALLINE SOLAR PANELS? Solar Panels are typically made of either Mono or Polycrystalline Silicon cells. Both technologies have improved sufficiently to give good arguments for either type of Silicon cell. This is true not only in terms of their efficiency but also in terms of their availability for mass commercial use and pricing. It s not difficult to find examples that illustrate the above points therefore Jademar develops solar products with either mono or poly crystalline silicon cells depending on the price, performance, efficiency and availability of the product. POLE CONFIGURATIONS Poles used for solar lighting applications are built to meet the local AASHTO wind load requirements understanding the weight and EPA requirements. Every pole is custom ordered for the specific project with little variances. Poles can either be Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Fiberglass Composite or Concrete and come with Anchor Bases, Direct Burial configurations, or Transformer Bases. Pole heights range from 10 to 35 and provide a minimum of 3 at the top of the pole for mounting of the solar power assembly. Consult your designer for additional options and recommendations. ANCHOR BASE Pole is installed via cast-in-place steel anchor bolts which are sized according to the pole loading and AASHTO wind zone.
