SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE THOMAS JOINDOT ERTMS DIRECTOR RAILWAY STRATEGY AND REGULATION DEPARTMENT UIC ERTMS CONFERENCE 1 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE Paris LONDON January 25, 2012 APRIL 5 mars 26, 2012 2012

OUR ROLLING STOCK ST TRATEGY Equipment or pre-equipment of new rolling stock All high-speed trains delivere ed since 2009 Regional trains, beginning with «Régiolis» fleet (2013) Freight locomotives (Akiem = SNCF Rosco) No retrofit Excepted in specific cases when no alternative for the business (Thalys) Because of the high cost of retrofitting 2 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

STRATEGY FOR ON-BOA ARD UNITS 2 products Bistandard ERTMS/TVM (An nsaldo STS) for high-speed trains Bistandard ERTMS/KVB (Alstom) for other trains The objective of a single version for each type of on-board unit In order to minimize risks and facilitate maintenance tasks 3 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

OUR NEEDS FOR ETCS TRAINS FROM A BUSINESS POIN NT OF VIEW Long distance Serving markets abroad on ETCS equipped lines Urban & regional Cross-border services (Luxembourg, Switzerland ) Freight It is more cost-effective to hire equipped locomotives when operating on routes fitted withetcs We have no business case for the retrofit of locomotives 4 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

OUR FLEET EQUIPPED WITH ETCS HIGH-SPEED TRAINS Bi-standard Bi-standard Bi-standard Bi-standard Bi-standard Bi-standard V7.1.5 V7.1.6 V7.2.3 V7.2.4 V8 V9 2.3.0 2.3.0 Corridor Corridor 2007 2007 2.3.0 Corridor 2007 2.3.0 Corridor 2007 2.3.0 D Baseline 3 2N2 (2011-2014) 2014) 55 train-sets POS 19 train-sets (2012) DASYE 52 train-sets (2012) 2014 Around 2020 PBA/PBKA (Thalys) 26 train-sets 5 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

OUR ETCS OPERATIONS Two high-speed cross-border services Thalys : ETCS L2 in Belgium and the Netherlands Perpignan-Figueras : 44 km in ETCS L1 (perspective to reach Barcelona once the lin e is completed) Testing on the Eastern High-Speed line in France ETCS L2 should be commissioned at the end of 2013 6 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

DEVELOPMENT AND FUT TURE Providers encountered serious difficulties software development, odom metry, reliability of the radio link SNCF invests a lot in project management Bug fixing and reduction of exported constraints therefore successive version s of the on-board software Formal methods and open licensed software: a promising future 7 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

OUR RETURN ON EXPERIENCE ON TESTING AND COMM MISSIONING Thalys example : the difficulty of working with multiple National Safety Authorities 8 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

OUR FEEDBACK REGARDING DRIVING PR ROCEDURES Drivers are really enthusiastic Degraded modes need a lot of attention and a very close cooperation between drivers and signalers Driving with ERTMS is intuitive but simulator training is a necessity for rare procedures 9 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE

NEXT STEPS 2013 : first ERTMS line in France (mixed traffic of ERTMS and TVM trains) Some projects on new high-speed h dlines to come Regional trains operating at 200km/h with ETCS on board ETCS-equipped high-speed trains ERTMS regional NExT (Nouvelle Exploitation Transilien) to run 320 km/h The future innovative urban train in Paris using ETCS and Automatic Train Operation with the objective of 30 trains per hour A threat: Radio interferences between GSM-R and public GSM 10 SNCF ERTMS STRATEGY AND RETURN ON EXPERIENCE
