Sustainable mobility... 07.10.2016 2

Sustainable mobility... Economy Urban planning Political regulations Efficient forms of transport E-Mobility Efficient technologies Power supply Accessibility Social Environment 07.10.2016 3

Vision VBZ: completely electric by 2030 4

VBZ route network (electric traction) Von Tschubby - Eigenes Werk, Hintergrund: Openstreetmap, CC BY-SA 3.0 VBZ figures 2015 Tram: 122.6 km, 14 lines Trolleybus: 54km, 6 lines Autobus: 324km, 24 city lines, 32 regional lines 900 000 passengers / day (327 Mio. / year) 2 544 employees

Electric traction: Yes, but... Totally different operational conditions: from «heavy duty» to minibus lines Diesel(-hybrid) buses are (until now) unbeatable in flexibility at given costs Special services, tram replacement, mass events etc. are to be covered Diesel-hybrid technolgy will still play a key role in the next >10 years 6

Electrification: The right application for every technology Hybridbus-Technologie «Heavy duty» lines: Battery-Trolleybus (partly with IMC) «Mid-range» lines: Battery-bus with IMC or opportunity charging Standard-bus lines: Battery-bus, charging «to be defined» Minibus: overnight-charging battery-bus

Strategic measures «ebus VBZ» (I) Extend the existing trolleybus system Operation without overhead wires in short sections (IMC «light») Electrification of «heavy duty»-lines 69 and 80 Test & introduce new vehicles with a wider range of battery (Swisstrolley plus, IMC, operation on additional lines) Define «mid-range» & standard-bus line operation «Bridge the gap» with diesel-hybrid vehicles Collect experience, further tests, cost analyses Battery-electric vehicles on minibus lines Test operation Oct 2016 Sept 2018 with overnight charging Fleet rollout from 2019 8

Strategic measures «ebus VBZ» (II) Create background infrastructure Garages incl. charging infrastructure & technical management systems Grid, catenary & stationary charging infrastructure Maintenance facilities & personal resources for all-electric bus fleet The goal is a: financially feasible completely electric VBZ-bus-fleet for all vehicle sizes and operation types with an adecuate background infrastructure in operation until 2030. 9

Zurich trolleybus system Started 1939 54 km net length, 125 stops 6 main lines (2 in project) 39 articulated buses (built 2007-2013) 31 bi-articulated buses (built 2007-2014) 180 000 passengers/ working day 10

Trolleybus: extensions and more flexibility Planned extensions Li 69 Hönggerberg Milchbuck + 4.2 km Li 80 Bahnhof Oerlikon Triemli + 11.8 km «IMC light»: operation without overhead wires in short sections 11

Step 1: «IMC light» - tests Test running for 8 months 2014/2015 (2 sections) Focus: connecting / disconnecting from catenary, optimise «funnel», test operational consecuences (punctuality etc.) 12

Step 1: «IMC light» - operation Descision for regular battery running Hardplatz- Albisriederplatz (ca. 400m) in spring 2015 Regular operation since august 2015: ca. 650 buses / day Next step: further reduction of catenary on complicated intersections (Bucheggplatz) Albisriederplatz 2014 Since 2015 13

Step 2: IMC & Swisstrolley plus Flagship project supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy Research platform in energy optimization and battery technology (high-performance traction battery) Goal: more cost-efficient, reliable and flexible trolleybus lines Prototype will arrive in Zurich in December 2016 Partners: Carrosserie Hess AG, Zurich Public Transport (VBZ), ETH Zurich and Bern University of Applied Sciences More on: https://www.swisstrolleyplus.ch/en/ 14

Battery-electric vehicles on minibus lines Test for 2 years from October 2016 Goal: gain experience and define requirements for complete minibus fleet rollout Rented vehicle: SOR EBN 8, charging with 32A / 64A

Thank you! 16
