During this two-month period there were two working days less in Belgium, France and Spain, and one less in all other countries. The market picture given by the two summer months is contrasting: while July ended with encouraging figures (only Denmark, France, Greece, Luxembourg and Portugal posted decreases), August, which is traditionally a weak month, ended with a clear drop. This can be partly explained by exceptional factors, such as the heat wave hitting a number of countries (-15.4 % in France, and 10.5 % in Italy, for instance), or in the case of Germany (-5.0 %) by consumers waiting to see new models unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In August, only Austria, Belgium, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.K. posted positive figures. Cumulative figures for the first eight months of 2003 show a decrease of 2.2 % (-2.1 % in the EU-15), in line with most forecasts. Five countries show positive figures: Finland (+23.9 %), Austria (+4.8 %), Sweden (+4.4 %), Spain (+0.7 %), the U.K. (+0.2 %) and Italy (+0.1 %). Decreases range from 1% in Germany and the Netherlands to 22.5 % in Portugal.
