(902) 538-7101 Email: marbicon@eastlink.ca Introduction Alion Herbicide (indaziflam) is a Group 29 selective preemergence herbicide for season long control of important broadleaf and grass weeds in apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries (sweet/sour), apricots, grapes and tree nuts grown in Eastern Canada and British Columbia. ALION Herbicide provides residual control of susceptible grass and broadleaf weeds when applied preemergence to the soil. Alion Herbicide may only be applied once per calendar year. The mode of action of Alion Herbicide is by inhibiting cellulose biosynthesis (cell wall synthesis) in the meristem. It is a member of the Alkylazine chemical family. The purpose of this study was to test the tolerance to dormant applications of Alion Herbicide in the production of blueberries, with a first application in the sprout year, and a second application in the fruiting year.

EFFICACY/CROP TOLERANCE PERFORMANCE FORM Page 10 of 69 Materials & Methods: Assessments: Although some emergence was seen on May 15 2015, no assessments were done until the shoots had more completely emerged, on June 24 2015. A field check was done on May 25 and June 15 2015. By mid-june, adjacent crop fields were starting to bloom. The study trial field had visible shoots (Figure 4, below) and the site was thus deemed ready for quantitative assessments on June 24 2015. A transect system to count stem height was employed as per protocol. The first 2016 height assessment was on July 5 2016. Figure 4. Typical shoot emergence on June 15 2015. Twenty-five stems per plot were measured for height, from the south corner of the plot to the north corner, excluding the end points (to remove edge effects). So the 3 m x 3 m plot allowed a central 2.5 m transect from the west to the east corner with a stem height value taken every 10 cm (nearest stem to the point). Stem presence/absence under the point was also recorded to give a measure of stem frequency. With 4 replicate plots, this provided 100 data points per treatment, with both the nearest stem height and the actual stem frequency being recorded. Stem height and frequency data were collected on June 24/2015, July 7/2015, July 23/2015, Jul 5/2016, and July 29/2016. For foliage cover assessment, four random 25-cm square (625 cm 2 ) quadrats per plot were used to estimate the percent cover. The cover assessments were on August 21 2015 and August 19 2016. The assessment in 2016 coincided with the time of crop harvest in adjacent fields. On August 19 2016, yield samples of all marketable berries were taken from 625- cm 2 square quadrats and weighed (grams). The total area harvested per treatment was one m 2.

EFFICACY/CROP TOLERANCE PERFORMANCE FORM Page 11 of 69 Results: Plots were set up on May 14, 2015 and the first application of treatments in the sprouting year was applied later that same day. Observations made on May 21 revealed that shoots were just breaking through the surface. By June 15, the tallest shoots were approaching 10 cm height, so the first quantitative methods could be initiated. Application in 2016 was somewhat earlier in the year than in 2015 because of a warmer spring. The application in the fruiting year was April 22, 2016. Stem height data for 2015 were collected on June 24, July 7, and July 23. 2016 data were collected on July 5 and July 29. All raw data are presented in Appendix 2. A summary of the stem height means and associated standard error is presented in Table 6. Initially. the plots treated with Alion at 750 ml/ha were significantly shorter from most of the other treatments at the 0.05 level. By July 2015, there were no significant differences between any treatments and the untreated. There were no significant differences in stem height in 2016. Discussion This was a two-year study, since lowbush blueberries are managed as a biannual crop, with the standing crop mowed to the ground in the fall after harvest to encourage sprout development in the following year. Fruit then develop on the second year growth, which in this trial, was 2016. Herbicides are known to increase shoot height in lowbush blueberries (Eaton, L. J. 1994. Long-term effects of herbicide and fertilizers on lowbush blueberry growth and production". Can J. Plant Sci. 74: 341-345). Alion at both 375 ml/ha and at 750 ml/ha did not have this effect. The Velpar plots had a higher stem height only on June 24 2015, and there were no significant height differences subsequently in either 2015 or 2016. In both 2015 and 2016, the first application of Alion herbicide was applied to a dormant field, before any shoot development. Subsequent monitoring showed no significant differences in stem height of the Alion-treated lowbush blueberries compared to the untreated at all assessments. There were no other signs of phytotoxicity in response to the any rate of Alion, such as leaf size, shape or colour. There were no significant differences in yield among any treatments and the untreated. Lowbush blueberries are tolerant to sequential Alion herbicide applications when applied once a year during dormancy.
