One pager examples Front Back RE-CONCEPTUALIZING SHOPPING MALLS from consumerism to energy conservation Shopping centers or malls have been invented in the 1920 s in the United States and represent the modern version of a historical market place with their collection of independent retail stores, services, and parking area. Over the whole of Europe there are thousands of retail outlets standing for almost 30% of the non-residential building stock and accounting for approximately 157 Mtoe (EU EEAP): project aims at giving practical support tools and solutions to transform them into lighthouses of energy efficient architectures and systems. Shopping malls - as temples of consumerism mirror modern society and its fast-moving, unsustainable lifestyles. In that sense shopping malls still stand for huge energy consumption, high CO 2 emissions and waste despite increasing, mostly individual, green initiatives in the field. To highlight this issue, the CommON- Energy project wants to transform shopping malls into lighthouses of energy efficient architectures and systems. The objective is to re-conceptualize shopping malls through 157 MTOE WHOLESALES & RETAIL BUILDINGS REPRESENT 28% OF THE TOTAL NON- RESIDENTIAL BUILDING STOCK (BPIE, 2010), ACCOUNTING FOR APPROXIMATELY 157 MTOE (EU EEAP). deep retrofitting utilizing an holistic systemic approach involving innovative technologies and solution sets as well as methods and tools to supporting their implementation. The soundness of the solutions and approach will be confirmed on three specific demonstration cases in Italy, Norway and Spain to significantly reduce consumptions while improving the comfort conditions and the environmental impacts estimated via life-cycle assessment. Shifting from single-action refurbishments to deep systemic retrofitting The Systemic Retrofitting Approach (SRA), which will be applied during the project is a crucial element to ensure high benefits, it will cover the following topics: Responsive modular multifunctional façade, Innovative, smart coating with thermo-acoustic characteristics, Natural and artificial lighting, Integration of active components (HVAC+R), Intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS), Short and long-term storage, Integrated design process guidelines, Trondheim, Norway Modelling environment and approach targeted to shopping mall retrofitting and control optimization, Energy-economic evaluation tools, Lean construction and management procedures, Continuous commissioning approach, Environmental and socio-cultural impact assessments. It will allow for achieving ambitious performance targets: Up to 75% reduction of energy demand (factor 4), Power peak shaving, 50% increased share of renewable energy source favoured by intelligent energy management and effective storage, Improvement of comfort and health conditions for occupants and visitors. These high energy performance targets will be realised with short payback times (below 7 years). The proposed technical solutions and implementation tools will be packaged Genova, Italy into 10-20 systemic solution-sets to Turning the consumer into allow for replication. Additionally, the a citizen organisation of technical workshops based on a train-the-trainer approach The cross-disciplinary and integrated research proposed by the will contribute to increasing the number of skilled practitioners and to consortium is expected to have a strong impact not spread the word over Europe. only on the key stakeholders of the energy efficiency in buildings and retail sector but potentially also on shopping mall customers. Objective is to make the project benefits tangible for a broader audience, and thereby create awareness for the importance of a more sustainable consumption behaviour.
