FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 Safety Precautions, please read carefully! This gauge is meant to be used exclusively as a fix mounted component of a strip processing machine. The strip processing machine must not be started up until a written statement was made that the entire machine (into which the gauge is installed) is in accordance with the regulations of the EG-Maschinenrichtlinie 89/392/EWG or, outside the EEC, with the local safety regulations. The manufacturer hereby points out, that this may include the installation of an appropriate protection device. The protection device (if one is necessary) has to be made in such a way that the operator can put the gauge down on the strip and lift it off the strip during the rolling process without facing any hazard by the running or by the possibly breaking strip. This manual has to be handed to the machine operator, and one copy must be permanently available to operator and service personnel. Nobody is allowed to work on or with the gauge, before he has read and understood this manual. Feel free to call the Vollmer company in case of any questions (phone +49 2334 507 0). Intended use of this machine This gauge must be used exclusively for the measurement of cold strip or profile as specified in the contract. It must be firmly installed in its intended position and connected as intended by the Vollmer company. Any alteration might cause damage. The maximum strip width on which the customer and the manufacturer agreed on must not be exceeded. Otherwise measurement errors may occur or the gauge might get damaged. We care about your Health. Please follow the safety precautions. Especially if you have many years of professional experience, you will be a Good example for younger colleagues Spares Please order spares referring to the part number and drawing number of the enclosed documentation drawings. To speed up our work, please do also state the Project number which is written as P-Nr. on the identity plate of the gauge. It is recommended to use the large drawings of the documentation for ordering spare parts rather than to refer to this manual. Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 3

measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation Design and function The Vollmer gauge VABM 4/00 E/R measures continuously the width of a passing strip or profile, e.g. on a slitter line. The measurement range may be individually different, depending on the customers requirements. It is determined when the gauge is manufactured, eg. as 0-35mm. Two movable measurement arms measure the edges of the strip while it passes through the gauge. The arms measure the strip edges with measurement rollers and they can move apart or come closer when the measurement rollers follow the strip edges. Any alteration of the strip width is measured by a transducer inside the gauge. The transducer signal is passed on to the measurement electronics. Here it is digitally indicated and put out as analog signal as well as via a digital interface. In this way the measurement data can be used in a separate evaluation computer for quality control documentation according to ISO 9000. The two measurement rollers are pushed off the strip edge by a two way pneumatic cylinder. This cylinder is in many applications only used as a choke so that the rollers are slowly approaching to the strip edges. At heir top end, the measurement arms are pushed apart by a pressure spring so that the measurement rollers are pushed against the strip edge. The strip width nominal size (only available on the analog output and only affecting the analog indicator) is set by a thumb wheel decade switch. When a nominal size is set, the indication of the measurement value is reduced for the nominal size. The indicator needle is on zero as long as the measured strip has the nominal width. The digital indicator shows the actually measured strip width as absolute value. VABM 4/00: The gauge head is lifted to so that the strip can easily be fed over the guide rollers. For measurement, the gauge head is lowered manually. The slidebase allows to shift the gauge across the passline. 4 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 This VABM 4/00 has adjustable guide rollers. They allow to measure even very slim profile and strip. The rollers help to extend the life of the measurement rollers by utilizing all sections instead of wearing off only the middle. measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation MT A B P P SM H ST F R SF Strip width gauge VABM: Two measurement arms A and B have a folding mechanism to move the hard metal measurement rollers R apart or put them together. In some applications, the two pneumatic cylinders P are used to press the measurement rollers firmly against the edges of strip ST. Other applications use only the spring at the transducer MT. In such cases, one direction of the pneumatic cylinder remains unused except that it regulates the closing speed of the guide rollers by the choke valve on its exhaust outlet. If the gauge is not measuring, the guide rollers are pulled apart to their limit stop (see pictures on the right.) The electronic transducer T measures the distance between the measurement arms. It is fastened to arm B and moves with it. The transducer ram is pushed against a hard metal pin on arm A. The handle H is used to swivel the gauge up and down. The slidebase SF allows to shift the gauge across the passline so that the strip runs always over the center of the guide rollers F. 6 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 OS D S In the normal measurement mode, the digital indicator shows the measured strip width. The pushbutton OS is pressed to set the gauge to zero while the measurement rollers are put together. The thumb wheel switch is used for nominal size setting of the analogue indicator. A diode flashes right beside the last digit, as long as the new nominal size was not read into the measurement electronics by pressing the Start button. The diode is switched to permanent light after value was read in. Not all gauges have such a thumb wheel switch, e.g. none is installed when the nominal size is set on a PC. Power on switches the entire system on and off. The pushbutton Switch analogue voltage controls the indicator range. See the text for details. Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 7

measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation Operation Power on / Zero setting The gauge needs to be set to zero after power-on, as the electronically saved zero may have been erased when the gauge was switched off. Go ahead in the following way: - Set POWER ON to 1 - operate the pneumatic valve so that the measurement rollers are put together - press the OS button below the digital indicator to set the indication to zero Set nominal size Set the thumb wheel decade switch S to the nominal size in microns. The last digit shows single microns. A nominal width of 30mm means to set the thumb wheels to 30 000. The diode behind the last digit flashes. The press START. Now the measurement electronics read the nominal value. The digital indicator shows a short message, e.g. 1P30000. This message means that the nominal value of 30000 microns (µm) was entered and that the last digit of the digital indicator is 1/100mm, i.e. 10µm. Read the separate instruction manual of the measurement module for details. The diode in the thumb wheel switch stops flashing and is permanently on when the selected nominal size is read. The analogue indicator now shows zero when the selected nominal width is measured while the digital indicator continues to show the measured width as absolute value. To adjust the gauge position With the gauge swivelled up, shift the slidebase to such a position that the strip runs over the middle of the guide rollers. In that position tighten the screw L to lock the slidebase. Now open the measurement rollers and swivel the gauge head down onto the strip. L Digital indicator The digital indicator shows the measured strip width. In the default setting, the last digit is 10 µm. It is also possible to set the indication to 1µm or to 8 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 100µm as last digit. This procedure is described in the separate manual for the counter module. The button OS sets the currently measured value to zero. For zero setting, there must be no strip in the gauge and the measurement rollers must be put together. Analog indicator An analog indicator which may be connected to the analog output indicates the measurement value reduced by the read nominal size (see before under Set nominal size). The operator may select different indication ranges by pressing the pushbutton SWITCH ANALOG VOLTAGE. The following ranges are available, each of them corresponding to a measurement signal between -10V and +10V for the full deflection of the indicator needle: ± 30 µm ± 100 µm ± 300 µm ± 1000 µm A message shows the currently set analog indicator range when the button is pressed (e.g. H 1000 for the range ±1000 µm). The indicator switches to the following range if the button is quickly pressed for a second time. The indicator then shows the new range for a short moment. This setting remains saved even in the system was switched off. To check the measurement accuracy Put a slip gauge or a master straight between the measurement rollers. The digital indicator needs to show the exact width of the slip gauge or the reference piece (if correctly positioned, so that the indication is the lowest value). If the deviation exceeds the tolerance, check the entire gauge. To clean the gauge Clean the surface of the measurement rollers so that no deposits can built up which would disturb the smooth running of the rollers. The gauge should be cleaned regularly to prevent movable parts from becoming blocked by dirt deposits. This is meant especially for the gap between the holders of the measurement rollers The inside of the gauge does not need any cleaning unless the measurement accuracy is affected by dirt deposits inside the gauge. Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 9

measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation To calibrate the gauge The gauge has been calibrated at the factory. New calibration is required if: - a new transducer was installed, or - the measurement arms were mechanically changed, e.g. by replacing bearings or - the linearisation data were erased. Calibration is performed step by step. Nine caliper gauges are measured one after the other and their size is read into a linearisation data file. The procedure is described in a separate instruction manual for the counter module. 10 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 Checking / Trouble Shooting Measurement rollers l Deposits on the surface? Some strip materials leave deposits on the rollers. They cannot run smooth on the strip and might mark the strip. ð clean or replace rollers l Surface worn? If the rollers show only a single section of wear, you might alter the measurement height for utilizing not worn roller sections. It is recommended to do so precautionary before a single section shows signs of wear. If, after a long time of operation, the rollers are worn over the entire usable surface, then ð replace the rollers l Clearance? The rollers have to move freely. They should have only little axial clearance. ð Replace defective rollers. If the roller surface is OK, replace only the bearings. Measurement arms l Parallel? If the measurement rollers are put together, the light must come evenly through the gap. If not, check the measurement rollers, their axles and the folding mechanism of the measurement arms and its bearings. ð replace defective or worn parts l Lateral clearance? The measurement arms may not have any detectable lateral clearance, i.e. the may not move in or against the running direction of the strip. If so, ð check the bearings in the measurement arm folding mechanism for wear Measurement transducer l Ram easy movable? The transducer rams must be easy to be pushed in and spring back immediately. If not, ð replace the transducer l The hard metal ball at the measurement tip worn or damaged? The ball must have a shining, even surface. if not, ð remove the transducer from the gauge and replace the measurement tip Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 11

measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation which is screwed to the transducer ram. Be careful not to bend the ram and not to damage its surface. l Hard metal pin surface dirty or damaged? The surface must be shining, flat and even. If not ð replace the hard metal pin HM 12 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 Maintenance The Vollmer VABM width gauge does not need much maintenance. In most cases, only the guide rollers are subject to wear. The transducer needs to be replaced, if the indication does not follow every motion of the measurement arms, e.g. because the transducer is stuck or moves too slow because of wear. After a long time of operation, the bearings in the folding mechanism of the measurement arms might be worn. This may be the same with hard metal pin opposite the transducer. To replace the transducer / the hard metal pin First remove the top side cover from the gauge head. The transducer MT can be pulled off its clamp hole after the clamp screw KT was loosened. Before inserting a transducer, spread the measurement rollers as far as possible. Then push the transducer into the clamp hole up to the limit stop (as shown below). The transducer ram must have some travel left even if the rollers are apart for the maximum distance. That means the transducer ram must not be pushed in to its limit stop (see the following sections). Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 13

measuring - controlling - recording - automation - documentation MT KT HM KH The hard metal pin is clamped with clamp screw KH. The pin is installed in such a position that the transducer ram has a little travel left to its limit stop while the measurement rollers are apart for the maximum distance. To ensure this, spread the measurement rollers pneumatically or manually to their limit stop. Then insert the hard metal pin into its clamp hole and push it in until the transducer reaches its limit stop. Now pull the hard metal pin back for about 0,5 mm and tighten the clamp screw KH to fasten the hard metal pin in that position. Measurement arms The bearings in the folding mechanism of the measurement arms need to be free of clearance. The surface of the measurement arms may not have dirt deposits so that their motion is not impeded in any way. 14 VABM 4-00 Operating and Service Instructions

FRIEDRICH VOLLMER Feinmeßgerätebau GMBH, 58093 Hagen, Verbandsstraße 60, ( +49 (0) 2334/507-0 Fax +49 (0) 2334/53015 Measurement rollers RS The hard metal measurement rollers R must be easy running and free of clearance. If they have only sectional wear, they may be turned upside down. To replace the measurement rollers R, remove one side panel from the gauge head. Then turn out the Allen bolt RS from the top. Take care to well hold on to the measurement arm, so that its precision mechanics do not get damaged. Then pull the measurement roller out towards the top, turn it upside down and push it back into the lower holding. If the roller bearing sticks firmly in the lower plate, remove this plate as well before driving the bearing out (see picture on the following page) The closed cover plate must be at the top, the plate with the open bore must be at the bottom side of the measurement roller. This protects the bearings from being permanently flushed with emulsion, but allows any liquid to drain off easily. Replace defective bearings with new bearings. If the roller surface is OK, there is no need to replace it together with the defective bearings. However, if a roller is replaced, always replace the bearings as well. HA The limit stop screw HA must be set in such a way that the measurement rollers are exactly perpendicular to the guide rollers. In most cases this may be checked with a water-level which is put on top of the gauge head. Alternatively, put a plate onto the horizontal guide rollers and a use a square to check if the front side of the gauge head is rectangular to the plate. This setting was adjusted at the first start-up on site. Usually there is no need for re-adjustment. Operating and Service Instructions VABM 4-00 17
