1. Important information for the installation of the electronic logbook These installation instructions are primarily designed for use within the BMW dealership organisation and by authorised BMW service companies; In any event the target group for these installation instructions is specialist personnel trained on BMW cars with the appropriate specialist knowledge. All work must be completed using the latest repair manuals, circuit diagrams, servicing manuals and work instructions in a rational order using the prescribed tools (special tools) and observing current health and safety regulations. Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car. Ensure that all components can move freely. If the specified PIN numbers are occupied, bridges, double crimps or twin-lead terminals must be used. Item numbers refer only to the overview drawing and to the texts next to the appropriate figure. Read the error memory before disconnecting the battery and after completing the installation work. As a result of development work it may be that connections or pin assignments are changed. You must therefore ensure that you use the latest test instructions for the installation. As you install the insulation-piercing connectors ensure that no stripped cable end projects out of them. The time required for calibrating the logbook is not included in the installation time. The installation position of the logbook shown in the installation instructions is to be regarded as a suggestion. The installation position for the logbook in the glove compartment is to be agreed with the customer before the installation work is commenced. Special attention must be paid to ensure that the glove compartment can be closed after the logbook has been installed in the required position. E53 cars with high instrument cluster only 13 A5 6 72 B Connect the socket contact () on branch A5, black/white cable to the free slot PIN3 on the white 18-pin connection plug () X13. Insulate and tie back the socket contact (13) on branch A5 (not required). If PIN 3 on connection plug () X13 is occupied, cut off the twin-lead terminal socket contact and connect the free cable end to the black/white cable on the connection plug () PIN 3 at a suitable point using an insulation-piercing connector (). To install and connect the connection cable E53 cars with low instrument cluster only 13 A5 6 73 B Connect the socket contact () on branch A5, white cable to the free slot PIN 1 on the white 18- pin connection plug () X176. Insulate and tie back the socket contact (13) on branch A5 (not required). If PIN 1 on connection plug () X13 is occupied, cut off the twin-lead terminal socket contact and connect the free cable end to the black/white cable on the connection plug () PIN 1 at a suitable point using an insulation-piercing connector (). 9. To install the base plate and logbook in the glove compartment Thread the socket contacts () on the spiral cable () on the base plate through the hole in the glove compartment and connect and lock them to the supplied socket casing (3). Find and mark the installation position of the base plate and logbook desired by the customer. Remove the Velcro strip () from the underside of the base plate, align it in the glove compartment () and affix it. Then use four fillister head screws.2 x 9.5 (5) to screw the strip of adhesive tape () securely into the glove compartment () as shown in the figure. E85 cars # # 85 251 B If the logbook is installed other than as shown in the figure, ensure that the glove compartment will close. Find and mark the installation position of the base plate and logbook desired by the customer. Remove the Velcro strip () from the underside of the base plate, align it in the glove compartment () and affix it. Then use four fillister head screws.2 x 9.5 (5) to screw the strip of adhesive tape () securely into the glove compartment () as shown in the figure. E6 / E53 cars 1 2 Secure the logbook (2) and base plate (1) onto the Velcro strip (). 9. To install the base plate and logbook in the glove compartment E85 cars Lay the spiral cable on the base plate from the inside through the hole you have drilled to the outside.
