Operating Instructions & Parts Manual Please read and save these instructions. Read carefully before attempting to assemble, install, operate or maintain the product described. Protect yourself and others by observing all safety information. Failure to comply with instructions could result in personal injury and/or property damage! Retain instructions for future reference. Westward Shop Presses (Equipped with Bottle Jack) Description Westward hydraulic shop presses are designed for use as an aid in assembling automotive and industrial components. Typical applications include installation and removal of alternator and power steering pump bearings, axle bearings, transmission bearings, seal, driveshaft bearings and u-joints and others. Each is designed to provide a positive means of performing clamping (gluing) and forming operations. It is not intended for use as an assembly table or as a fixture stand used to secure a large, final assembly component. Do not exceed rated capacity. Press should be set up on a hard level surface. Always wear safety goggles when working on or near this equipment. Keep hands and feet from loading area. Never leave loaded press unattended. Center load workpiece to help prevent objects from becoming propelled from the press. Ensure the user is familiar with the control and operational characteristics of this device and aware of the potential hazards assiciated with its use. Inspect before each use. Do not use if bent, broken, leaking, or damaged components are noted. No alteration of this product is allowed. Do not use this device for any purpose other than that for which it was intended. Failure to heed any one or combination of these warnings may result in severe personal injury and/or property damage. Upper Cross Member Bottle Jack Jack Bracket Jack Handle Arbor Plate Bed Frame Support Pin Saddle Ram Oil Filler Plug Handle Socket Release Valve Bottle Jack Before Use (Refer to Figure 1) 1. Occasionally bottle jacks become air bound and will not function properly. To correct this condition, remove oil filler plug. This will allow any pressurized air to escape. a. Ensure the oil level is even with or just below the oil filler plug hole. b. Reinstall the oil filler plug.. Thoroughly lubricate all moving parts of the jack. a. Raise the saddle to full height by closing release valve and pumping handle. b. Oil surface of ram as well as all moving parts in the handle and lifting mechanism. Attach base legs (No.1) and lower cross member (No. ) to upright channels (No.) with bolts,flat washers, lock washers and nuts (No.). Hand tighten only.. Attach support links (No.5) to the base (No.1) and upright channels (No.) with bolts, flat washers, lock washers and nuts (No.).. Carefully slide bed frame (No.) down to lowest possible position between the upright channels (No.).. Attach screw hooks (No.) to the jack bracket (No.) with nuts (No.9) as shown in figure. Leave nut untighten to provide easy spring attachment. 5. Slide the jack bracket (No.) down between upright channels (No.) onto the bed frame (No.).. Attach upper cross member (No.10) to upright channels (No.) with bolts, flat washers, lock washers and nuts (No.11).. Attach one end of the springs (No.15) to the axles of upper cross member (No.10) and the other end to the screw hooks (No.) on the jack bracket.. Carefully place the bottle jack (No.1) between the head plate of upper cross member (No.10) and jack bracket (No.). Tighten the nuts (No.9) that hold screw hooks (No.) to prevent jack from inadvertently falling out. 9. Tighten all applicable nuts and bolt assemblies. 10. Carefully bring the bed frame (No.) up and secure it with pins (No.19). 11. Place the Arbor Plates (No.1) on Bed Frame (No.). 1.The press is now ready to use. Don t forget the handle (No.1) for bottle jack. Caution: Before disassembly, carefully slide bed from down to its fully lowered position.

Leave nut untighten to provide easier spring attachment later.. Slide the jack bracket (No.) down between upright channels (No.) onto the bed frame (No.).. Attach upper cross members (No.10) to upright channels (No.) with bolts, flat washers, lock washers and nuts (No.11).. Attach head plate (No.1) to upper cross members (No.10) with bolts, lock washers and square washers (No.1). 9. Attach two bolts, lock washers and nuts (No.1) thru the upper cross member (No.10). Then attach one end of the springs (No.15) to the bolts (No.1) and the other end to the screw hooks (No.) on the jack bracket. 10. Carefully place the bottle jack (No.1) between the head plate (No.1) and jack bracket (No.). Tighten the nuts (No.9) that hold screw hooks (No.) to prevent jack from inadvertently falling out. 11. Tighten all applicable nuts and bolt assemblies. 1. Carefully bring the bed frame (No.) up and secure it with pins (No.19). 1. Place the Arbor Plates (No.1) on Bed Frame (No.). 1.The press is now ready to use. Don t forget the handle (No.1) for bottle jack Caution: Before disassembly, carefully slide bed from down to its fully lowered position.

Westward Shop Presses (equipped with Bottle Jack) Operation IMPORTANT: Projectile Hazard! Wear ANSI Z.1 approved eye protection. Never stand directly in front of loaded press. Ensure that workpiece is center-loaded and secure. Reduce risk of flying debris by carefully following all operating instruction. Know your press and the hazards associated with its use. Keep hands and feet from bed area at all times. Always center load workpiece. 1. Insert workpiece into bed frame, using every precaution necessary to ensure your safety and prevent property damage. Position workpiece in a manner which will not allow it to inadvertently fall from bed.. With jack handle, close the release valve by turning it clockwise firmly, until tight.. Insert operating handle into handle socket and pump until ram nears workpiece.. Align ram and workpiece to ensure center-loading. 5. Apply load to workpiece by pumping Troubleshooting Chart handle. Do not overload workpiece.. Remove load from workpiece by turning release valve counterclockwise. Stabilize workpiece in a manner which will not allow it to inadvertently fall from the bed once the load is removed.. Once ram has fully retracted, remove workpiece. Maintenance 1. Before each use, inspect press for damage. Do not use if bent, broken, cracked, leaking or otherwise damaged components are noted.. Periodically, lightly oil all moving parts, including the pump piston and ram. IMPORTANT: Use only a good grade hydraulic jack oil such as Mobil DTE 1M or equivalent. Avoid mixing types of oil. Do not use hydraulic brake fluid, alcohol, glycerine, detergent motor oil, or dirty oil. Improper fluid can cause serious internal damage to the jack rendering it inoperative. adding oil TO bottle jack 1. With saddle fully lowered and piston depressed, remove oil filler plug.. Fill until oil is level with or just below filler plug hole. CHANGING oil of bottle jack 1. With saddle fully lowered and piston depressed, remove oil filler plug, then drain fluid into suitable container and dispose of in accordance with local regulations.. Fill with good grade hydraulic jack oil ONLY. Reinstall oil filler plug. rust prevention Check ram and pump piston for signs of rust on a regular basis. Clean as needed with a lint free, oil saturated cloth. Symptom Possible Cause(s) Corrective Action Jack will not press load 1. Release valve not completey closed. 1. Poor lift performance 1. Oil level low. 1. Ensure proper oil level.. Air trapped in system.. With ram fully retracted, remove oil filler plug to purge air. Reinstall oil filler plug. Jack will not lift to full height 1. Oil level low. 1. Ensure proper oil level.

Shop Presses, covered in this manual, are warranted by Westward to the original user against defects in workmanship or materials under normal use for one year after date of purchase.
